Sons' sorrow

Recommended Posts

Entirely part-time.  Realistically there are only maybe 4 full-time teams that could potentially be interested in him, those being Morton, Queens, Livi and Airdrie.  I'd be confident of us beating the wages of the latter two for this year.

I wouldn't bet on that. Airdrie outbid us for Iain Russell.

From what I heard it was more the 2 year deal and chance to play for Airdrie that made him pick them over you. Think Queens would only offer him a year.

All the noises being made from Airdrie was they'd be offering pretty low end wages for a full-time side - pretty much all of the players they wanted to keep told them where to go. Although it's entirely plausible that they went big/will go big on a couple of players to ensure they have some quality I'd still be confident of us offering a better wage than them.  It's fairly irrelevant anyway, now that Grant has signed for you guys.

There is no clear panic but absolutely some major concerns around the size of squad we're running with.

If one of our paltry '18' gets injured we already can't fill the bench. Imagine what would happen if 3 or 4 got injured. A bench of 4 which includes a goalie, Ryan Clark and this mysterious u20 international

I understand that staying in this division doesn't come cheap but what the hell has happened to see us end up in a nick where we can only afford to recruit 18 players? Especially after chopping the u20s and losing big earners like Nade, Routledge and Saunders off the wage bill? Add to that the fact that half the squad appear to have been offered lesser deals than last season. Concerning IMO.

Last season we only had 22 players who played ten or more times. Two of them were goalkeepers and several only played half a season eg Gibson, Brown, Brophy, Nade. So 18 isn't that small especially as we'll likely bolster it with loans as the season goes on

18 is the size of a matchday squad. 11 starting players and 7 on the bench. 18 is a small squad to run with, absolutely no denying it, particularly without the development squad to fall back on.

We were relatively lucky with injuries last year but for the majority of the season we had more than 18 players available for selection.

We may well bolster it with loans but according to Stevie 18 is the squad we'll run with. 2 of those are Ryan Clark and some youngster no one has heard of.

We are obsessed in part with squad sizes these days precisely due to the ridiculous number on the subs bench.

(Cue Hovis theme)....when Sons won the 2nd Division in May 1972 we'd used only around 14/15 players that season, and indeed Leeds used I think 14 when winning the English title around the same time.  As well as patience, the key is in getting a balanced team and trying to keep it fit - in that respect there can be no Darren Millers or Gordon Smiths this time around.

Some useful info on the new challenge cup if anyone is interested....we are set to make at least 5500 pounds from competing.....might pay nade's wage for a month lol.

17k for winning a cup competition. I doubt that would even cover the win bonuses paid out in getting to the Cup final.

Don't get me started on U20s and Welsh teams again!

I believe the squad is going to be around 18 including any loanees . Becoming important that any more signings and loaners are meaningful .

I m not wholly in favour of buying players who are average in a number of positions .Would rather sign specialist as we probs ly have enough who can cover.

Forward and creative would be my priority but I'm sorry I don't have any ideas who .

I assume we will have some trial it's a training this weekend.

If it does turn out to actually be 18 including loan players (and the two youths) we are pretty much fucked.

I hope I'm wrong about Stevenson but I think it's going to be Gibson part 2.

Of the 21 we had last year (listed on the OS - doesn't take into account the wasted wages on Miller and Smith) we had Kler Heh, Heffernan, Kirkpatrick, Hopkins and to a lesser extent McCallum who rarely featured and rarely offered us anything.  If we're taking those wages and signing 18 players who will actually feature on a regular basis and offer us something then I'm all for it.  If we get a few injuries then we have the emergency loan system to call upon.  Again, not ideal but it appears the most sensible and reasonable approach given the situation.

I don't see a squad of 18 as a huge disaster, not being able to fill a bench of 7 players doesn't matter, we can only use 3 of them anyway and we've done it plenty of times over the past 4 seasons (even having our manager putting himself on the bench to fill spaces for the sake of it) and we've survived okay.

Edit to add - Of that 21 the only long term injuries we had were Lindsay and Barr and even then Barr was only a few weeks.

It seems Conroy may have left queens, does anyone think he might be other winger we need, could he do the job?, definitely a player in there, maybe traveling less may help him, considering he's apparently local, excellent free kick taker,

I'm led to believe at this stage that we have made zero contact with him and appear to have no interest.

No idea where he's heading but it certainly doesn't look like it will be us. That may well change as the competitive games loom closer of course.
