Took your recommendation, as I quite fancied a Peep Show podcast. I really hope they drop the bollocks, "ooh, you'd never get away with that now, bloody PC millennials" thing that's come up in the first few episodes.

Edit: also, one of them sounds scarily like David Mitchell on helium

Dunno if you're still listening to it or not, but the one who doesn't sound like David Mitchell becomes more and more insufferable the longer it goes on.

I like series 1 the best probably.

But, the single best episode is the wedding.

Aye it's the best episode for me partially as it's the culmination of multiple seasons worth of stories. That it kept going after and wasn't bad is a credit to the writers.

I thought series 9 was superb.

I hated season 8 and thought it was far and away the weakest for a number of reasons but the last season was really funny. I agree with folk who said it felt like fan fiction but at least it was funny.

I got quite a ways in, but drifted away from it for that exact reason, although I forget exactly how. Might start listening again to jog my memory.

I do vaguely remember they kept droning on about how un-PC Peep Show was, and that no-one would dare make an edgy show like that now, which seemed fucking hilarious considering I can remember some of the old comedy crew mumping about the modern PC unfunny comedy from people like Mitchell & Webb.

Edit: just realised I said the same thing at the top of the page

It always makes me laugh when people say a relatively tame series like Peep Show wouldn't be aired anymore, when It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is currently filming its fifteenth season.

I agree about that podcast, by the way. I listened to their episode reviews for the first couple of seasons and, while I generally quite enjoyed them, I thought they were usually about half an hour too long and found the presenters quite grating.

Is that a common view? Even watching Peep Show's early shows I don't think I've ever thought "Ooft, that wouldn't be allowed today".

Apart from the blackface scene I think folk would have to be very desperate to find offence. But I bet they would.

I'm not sure how 'common' it is, as such; I've heard it a few times on the aforementioned podcast and on social media, though. Likewise, I can't think of many examples to back it up.

I've started watching it again and today I watched the episode where Mark literally sits watching gay porn.

Look, I’m a businessman. It’s what I am, it’s what I do.

I suspect “That couldn’t be made today” or its partner “You’d never get away with that today” are just tropes from the American right wing. I hear it a lot from Trump supporters and whenever they start spouting the same opinions all of a sudden; it’s an indication they’re being fed them by talk radio or Fox.

I learned this week that ‘The Full Monty’ couldn’t be made today because the ‘Me Too’ movement would be all over it.

Would they though? Would they really?

This seems to have become something that people would like to be true, rather than an actual phenomena.

It definitely originates from people who are still livid that nobody wants to watch minstrel shows anymore, and has been co-opted by folk who think discrimination and marginalisation looks cool, and are annoyed not to be experiencing it themselves.
