Walking Down The Halbeath Road

We are only 5 games into the season this also being their first season as young professionals, let's be honest the only league game they could have realistically been thrown into was the Edinburgh game and they weren't in the match squad.

I wasn't criticising the decision to not use them. Just commenting that it will be a long slog with the current squad if there are no further additions and the manager can't rely on the young players when he needs to freshen it up.

Notice James Craigen has left Arbroath on a free. Not expecting him to drop down a division but his versatility would be exactly what we need imo.

If it was an option, I’d be happy with that. Decent utility player that could provide cover for a number of positions.

Also, given the transfer window is shut, I wouldn’t imagine there should be a long wait for loan players - despite the domestic loan window being open until the end of the month. These clubs higher up the ladder now know what their squads look like and who is maybe unlikely to feature. So it doesn’t benefit anyone to delay loan moves until later in the month.

What is the 5 sub rule Stella? Not aware of this.

In all seriousness, you must have noticed teams have been making more than 3 subs during games? Away to Arbroath last season, we made 4 subs at once.

Basically, you’re allowed a 9 man bench and can bring on up to 5 players now. But it can only be done across 3 stoppages in play. So can’t stop for 5 separate substitutions, have to make multiple changes at a time to make the most of it.

Dorrans has left the club by mutual consent.

Just seen that myself. Strange move if we don’t have loan signing(s) ready to be announced. A 17 man first team squad, with 3/4 out injured is far from ideal!

That’ll free up some wages. A complete waste of money, and we all predicted it would turn out that way when he signed. Guy was finished as a footballer when he was at Dundee.

Surely to Christ we have some players lined up to sign asap.

Transfer Deadline Update from David Cook:

"Like you, we are frustrated that we could not add to our squad ahead of the transfer window closing for permanent transfers in Scotland and in England.

"Both the management team and I were at KDM Group East End Park until late in the night looking to conclude deals on identified targets.

"As we have said throughout, we are keen to strengthen the squad but we want to sign players that enhance a good group of players rather than just sign players to pad out the squad.

"We made enquiries and loan offers for several players in England at established Premier League and Championship clubs. The reality of playing in SPFL League One meant that these offers were rejected by the parent clubs who were hoping to place these players at clubs playing at a higher level.

"We made offers for two players based in Scotland. One was rejected by a club whilst the other was accepted only for the player to decide to stay with his parent club. In addition, we made a number of enquiries for players in the SPFL Premiership.

"As the Scottish transfer window remains open for loan moves until 30 September, many of the clubs advised that both they and the players preferred to wait till after the transfer windows closed in England and the SPFL Premiership before they would consider domestic loans in either the championship or League 1.

"We continue to look to strengthen the squad and there is budget available. We remain committed to adding further quality to the group and will continue to explore all options available to us."

Doesn’t sound like there’s anything  in the pipeline. Made an offer to one club, who decided the offer wasn’t good enough. Had a bid for another player accepted, but they didn’t want to come. It’s hardly sounding like they’ve been desperate to boost the squad.

edit - misread and somehow missed the paragraph about several players in England. Nevertheless, surely we need backup options/alternatives? If clubs at a certain level want their players playing at a higher level, we shouldn’t be making all of our alternate targets players from clubs at the same/similar level.

We don’t want to fill the squad with garbage. But we do also need some form of cover.

Dorrans won't be a miss. Was a poor signing in the first place. His injuries must be pretty bad too, unless he somehow has a deal lined up with a Championship club.

Letting Wilson go for nothing last season was a shitter. f**k Hughes, Grant and the board for last season. They are why we are in this mess. Absolutely everyone could see how it would end except them seemingly.

League 1 simply isn't an attractive prospect to so many players, as we're seeing. Only the foolish doubted that the club weren't trying to do business, but sounds like they might have overestimated the draw of playing at Dunfermline and/or underestimated how difficult it will be getting folk in.

I get that they don't want signings for the sake of it, like Hughes did, but also it's League 1. They don't have to be that good.

Anyway, something about reaping and sowing.

Either need players to get out of their contracts today or rely on a domestic loan which can be made pretty much from now until March anyway

Eh? You can do them in September and February (plus the window is open through January). You can't do a loan from October and December or in March.

Crawford had a great eye for players in the Scottish leagues. Turner, Wilson, Edwards, E Murray, Comrie, Lang, Thomson, Nisbet, Dow, Kiltie, Thomas, MacDonald, F Murray, McInroy, Mayo, Henderson, Watson, Wighton. Some worked better than others, but there wqs a sense to it.

I get that being in League 1 makes it much harder, but was Crawford solely responsible for scouting? He and the club had a clear model of signing younger lads to develop, assisted by some more experienced players. What is the model now?

Also, were the club really thinking they could get players from the English Premiership?! 😅

Tbf our new keeper is from Nottingham Forrest U21s and you’d have to think that’s the sort of players the statement is referring to. Also his da’ played for us but I don’t know if that’s relevant or not.
