Watched Phone Booth last night.

It was utter drivel and to think I thought it might have been good!

1/10

Went to see 16 Blocks last night, it was pretty decent. Bruce Willis performed pretty well as an alcoholic cop charged with escorting wtiness Mos Def (also good) 16 blocks to a Grand Jury. Things become complicated when it becomes clear that the witness isn't going to have a straightforward trip and it's NY's finest who stand in vest-boys way.

These 'twist' thrillers can be a bit samey, but it was good entertainment I thought.

When I got home I watched American Beauty, haven't seen it in a few years, a good film I thought, very well shot and acted. Everyone on earth must've seen it though. I then watched the last hour of American Werewolf in London, quality stuff

Sounds almost identical to my night

I was a bit disappointed in 16 Blocks, although would agree Mos Def was excellent, and Willis' character was ideal for his bewildered depressive scowl. I thought though that they never really got to the bottom of why Willis was so fucking depressed though, and the "twist" was a bit out of the blue and wasn't really expanded upon enough. I'd give it 6/10.

Today I watched David Lynch's Wild At Heart, where Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern go on the run to New Orleans after he gets parole having committed a particularly bloody manslaughter. They are pursued by a medley of what can only be described as Lynchian characters, most notably the mental "Bobby Peru" played by Willem Dafoe. It was quite hilarious in parts, typically "nightmarish" as Lynch films tend to be, and all in all an enjoyable ridiculous and surreal trip. Constant Wizard of Oz references get it bonus points in my book too - 9/10 :D

Flightplan 6.5/10

Not quite the dog of a film that it's been made out to be, although it does get slightly ludicrous at points and there are plot holes you could drive a truck through. Decent enough. It has to be said, Jodie Foster hasn't aged well at all. She looks about 50-odds.

I also watched Shark Tales this morning (2.99 out Tesco). Okay- some funny moments and some good parody in there, but I was left a little underwhelmed considering the stellar cast and track record of Dreamworks. 5/10

Worst film I've ever seen. When you find out what's going on, you go, AW FOR FUCKSAKE! because it really is that bad. Starts off quite well and everything, but just winds up being really shit.

Mission Impossible 3.

Total baws.

4/10

I'll break it down for everyone:

10 for the superb opening 5 minutes.

-8 for being unable to shake the feeling that it was Tom Cruise instead of Ethan Hunt.

+7 for the eye candy (Michelle Monaghan and Maggie Q).

+2 for an awkward but welcome Simon Pegg cameo.

-5 for the whole movie being a statement on Cruise's real life personal life and morals (Isn't it great being in love? :barf)

+4 for Shanghai and the Bridge.

-6 for the most obvious plot twist commited to celluloid

+10 for Phillip Seymour Hoffman

-5 for his 5 minutes of screen time

-5 for shitting their pants and destroying one of the best opening sequences of recent times and generally crapping out of any chance of ruining the big old happy ending.

Recap - 4/10

Went to see Silent Hill tonight.

I've never played the game so I'll judge it as a film only - 7/10.

The monsters in it were genuinely creepy and the plot was quite good, some of the set pieces (involving the guy in the toilet) were really freaky.

Loses points for the The Village-style "commune" that seem to exist in the place, they don't really fit in with the rest of the film.

Overall, an enjoyable yarn, would have probably gave it a 6/10 but we got to see it for free :D so a 7's a fair score.
