Nine Lives (2002)

British horror set in Scotland (well in a house near Barnet, about 300 miles from the Scottish border, but never mind!).

This is sitting at #81 in the worst films of all time on IMDb, which is completely ridiculous as, although it's a bit stupid at times and has Paris Hilton in it (we know she's shit over here, so she's first to die!), it is quite an enjoyable wee film. Completely harmless and doesn't deserve to be considered either good or bad. It was watchable, the plot was fine and there was no teleports so can't mark it down for that.

It's about a Scottish landowner from days gone by, who had his land taken from him by the English, so is intent on taking over a body and killing anyone he can find... or is he?

5/10 - not worth another watch, but I can't say I disliked it!

X Men: First Class

I thought this was great. I know that X2 is generally held up as the high point of the series, but I thought this was every bit as good. Kevin Bacon was cool as Sebastian Shaw and Michael Fassbender was tremendous as Magneto (last 20 mins where he does a Sean Connery and starts using his own accent included)

And January Jones' outfits are just spectacular ;)

And I won't spoil it, but it also has the best use of the word "f**k" that I've seen in a film for ages

Watched 'Inglourious Basterds' for the first time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Well acted from all involved, and I love how Tarantino's films can go off on tangents for ages, but are so enjoyable, that you never really notice.

Great fun 8/10

Did Magneto ask Sebastian Shaw, "so how the f**k does it work that if I say an actor, that people can connect them back to you in six steps"?

The Hangover 2 - 8/10

Actually enjoyed this more than the 1st one. Felt there were more laugh out loud moments in this one but I saw the 1st film with my girlfriend and this one with my mates so maybe thats the difference.

The Shawshank Redemption - 10/10

Absolutely fantastic watch. If you haven't seen this film go buy/rent/download it right now.

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Would be a brilliant film anyway, but the fact that it is based on a true story just puts it on another level. Having watched this tonight and Inception last night, I must say I forgot how good an actor Leonardo Di Caprio is.

9/10

I had a major debate with a mate in the pub one night about this. He was raving about Di Caprio and how good he is. I just don't get it. He sounds the same in everything he is in. He can play roles well, but I can watch him in one film and think, he was pretty similar in another. Di Caprio is rarely in a bad film, hence the reason he is so highly rated, in my opinion. I think the films make him, not the other way around. Johnny Depp can be in some utter dross films yet will still get right into the character. For me he is far better than Di Caprio. I will say one other thing for Di Caprio, he was utter astounding in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and imo that was easily his finest hour.

Black Swan - mmm yeah. I was told there wasn't much dancing and a few sex scenes. I was disappointed on both accounts 6/10

Did you feel weird at the end of it? My mate said that she was told before hand that afterwards she would feel a weird feeling after watching it, she didn't believe it but after viewing said that she did have a weird feeling. I have no idea what she was going on about, can you put a rationale explanation to her rant?

I Love You, Man

Bro-mance with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. I actually really enjoyed this. Rudd plays his role well and you are literally cringing with him early on in the film. Segel makes the film for me and is absolutely hilarious. I would love a mate like him! They both work well at portraying an awkward start to their friendship and bounce quite nicely off one another in the end. A few Rush songs are thrown in which add positively to the soundtrack.

I wasn't expecting much but would recommend it. Good watch.

7.5/10

I have recently got rid of Sports 1 as there is no football and replaced it with a film package, mainly comedy and horror, so I have a sh$tload of films on record to get through :D

Scream Bloody Murder (1973)

Matthew is a bit retarded, and kills his father with a tractor, jumps off it and it runs over his arm. This happens before the title screen, and is the best part of the film as it made me laugh and shout fail at the screen...

He goes a looney bin, before being released I'm guessing when he turned 18... goes home to find his mother just happened to get married that day to a guy with a Hulk Hogan moustache. The moustache alone seems reasonable enough reason to kill them both!

He runs away, hitchhikes west, kills the people who give him a lift (because he thinks it's his mum and the guy is trying to take her away from him).

Anyways, he steals their car, well he doesn't really steal it, they're dead so you can't steal something that doesn't belong to anyone, I guess!

When he gets wherever he's going he develops a crush on a hooker and starts killing clientelle, and then kidnaps her and keeps her prisoner in a mansion he "acquires" from some old woman.

Quite a few deaths later, Angus Scrimm (the Tall Man in the Phantasm quadrilogy) shows up as a doctor to check on the irritating old biddy, and he ends up dead as well.

Eventually a bunch of nuns kill Matthew, I'm not quite sure to be honest what the hell happened here, it seemed like a dream sequence, but he's dead regardless.

Imagine Psycho, but not very good and without a motel...

I'll give it 2/10 - for the opening scene and for Matthew trying to get the tied up hooker to show some gratitude (after earlier threatening to cut out her tongue if she didn't eat some foul looking spaghetti), by saying "See what I do for you? I get groceries and clothes and art stuff and kill people. And do you appreciate it? No."

Buried - 5/10

Not the greatest and does begin to drag, nothing to really keep you waching and definetly not a film you'll watch more than once. Was maybe ruined by friends who told me there was a massive twist at the end when there really wasnt dry.gif

3:10 to Yuma 2/10

A lot of people said this was a great film, I disagree. Last night I was choked up so went to bed and threw it on, I was dead bored! Persevered with it, and then the ending was just horrifically bad IMO.

Anyway, it's set in 19th century America with a civil war vet (Christian Bale) struggling to make ends meet on his ranch. He witnesses a crime committed by an outlaw Ben Wade, played by Russell Crowe. Long story short, Bale's character offers to help escort Wade cross country to Contention to catch the train to Yuma prison. Hope I haven't put anybody offhuh.gif

The Town 8/10

Having seen and loved Gone Baby Gone, i had high expectations for Ben Affleck's most recent directorial feature, and i wasn't disappointed. I thought this was great. The pacing was spot on, and whilst the action scenes were terrfic, there was much more to the film.

Jeremy Renner steals the show for me. His character is a horrible cunt, yet i couldn't help but smile at just how crazy he is! Blake Lively is also brilliant as Renner's sister and Affleck's spunkbucket. There's plenty of great scenes, but i loved it when one character in particular (not going to spoil it) gets his comeuppance.

Highly recommend it.

Dial M for Murder - 7/10

I just love the way Hitchcock's films were shot. This flew in! The snappy dialogue (particularly when Tony is telling Swann exactly why he is going to kill his wife for him) makes the film.

Next Hitchcock to see, Strangers on a Train.

Senna

I had hoped this would be similar to When We Were Kings in that the story was powerful enough to involve people not really interested in the sport and so it turned out to be. Remarkable behind the scenes footage combined with amazing real events make this a very enjoyable and emotional watch. I found it a bit disappointing that there were no retrospective commentaries from the likes of Michael Schumacher, Nigel Mansell or Jackie Stewart but, with all the politics and personal interests involved, it would probably have been difficult to get them on board.

It's well worth seeing whether you like motor racing or not.

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

This is a really difficult one to rate, as the first hour has everything I hate about horror, it has really stupid people, people falling over and teleport deaths.

The last bit though is some of the best "so shit it's amazing" horror you'll ever see!

  • The teleport deaths get taken to the extreme with Jason Vorhees appearing with random weapons that he could never have encountered, including a brand new scythe and a rotary edger!
  • Tina has telekinetic powers and uses everything around her to try and take down Jason, even at one point throwing Eddie's severed head at him.
  • Jason survives every single thing thrown at him, before succumbing to the funniest death in film history!

Her father that she killed by accident with telekinesis as a child, gets brought out of the water and drags Jason down from the dock

I can't possibly fail anything as funny as the last 20 minutes or so of this film, even though the first hour was tragically shit!

6/10
