Just came back from the cinema after seeing a very late showing of No Time To Die. Enjoyed it probably the most since Casino Royale.

  • It's very long and it only slightly shows its length
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge's writing is fairly obvious especially in how every woman is written
  • Lea Seydoux and the actress that played the wean were great alongside Craig.
  • Speaking of Craig he looked relieved to finally be done (he has to be done now)
  • Rami Malek was as good as I thought. He's a weird fella although I'll have to watch some of his older movies because it really looks like those awful prosthetics from Bohemian Rhapsody have fucked his face
  • Ana De Armas is terrific with less than 5 minutes of screentime. Superb.

Definitely run, don't walk, to see the latest 007 joint.

Absolutely criminal, that.

Ah, seems a bit of a stupid rule. So only one of Thelma and Louise could have been nominated?

Its possible have changed the rules, as I don't think its happened since, but  both Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon got Best Actress nominations for Thelma and Louise.

Thought I recognised the name LaKeith Stanfield - he was excellent (along with everyone else) in Sorry to Bother You, and Get Out. I see he's been in a few more films that I've been meaning to watch, so thanks for the mention, chaps. One of the great things about this thread is having films/actors brought to your attention that might otherwise have slipped by.

Not sure why LaKeith Stanfield was even nominated for "Supporting" Actor when he is clearly joint lead. His character being mentioned in the title gives that away. Still, the Oscars often seem to have weird nominations like that.

You can only put forward one leading actor a per film so maybe Daniel Kaluuya got that.

Kaluuya was also nominated for (and indeed won) Best Supporting Actor.

I would imagine the reason is that the Best Actor category this year was a two man race, from about September last year it looked like a procession for Chadwick Boseman with a very small outside chance for Anthony Hopkins, who ultimately won.

By comparison, Supporting Actor was a lot less clear until we got into 2021. So anybody who could reasonably swing their performance as supporting rather than lead made sense to submit in that category instead.

Just as he was mentioned LaKeith Stanfield is one of my current favourite actors, usually a stand out in every thing he's in and one of the few actors I would watch in anything.

I'm sure I read somewhere that they were both submitted as Supporting Actors but I have no idea how the Academy works. Stanfield was robbed though. The best peformer in a movie of great performances.

Also, yeah, Stanfield is superb. Superb in Judas, very good in Get Out and the underrated star of Atlanta.

Just watched No Time to Die, really enjoyed it, I grew up watching Connery and Moore but I think Daniel Craig is my favourite Bond.

Glad Ana de Armas is only in it briefly otherwise I wouldn't have been able to focus on the movie itself.

She was absolutely brilliant. Beautiful, funny as f**k, and an absolute badass.

I would happily watch a spin-off movie with that character, it could be the breakout they didn't manage with Halle Berry's Jinx when Die Another Day turned out to be a disaster.

She was incredible, I was mesmerized by her.

I knew nothing about Bond other than that one trailer which has been playing for years now so I just assumed she was gonna have a bigger role. It was kind of perfect as a small part though and, imo, when the film was at its best. It did lose me shortly after that though and didn't really recover.

Venom (2018) dir. Ruben Fleischer

Tom Hardy's line reading in this remains one of the most bizarre performances I've ever seen in a movie and it would be far worse if they ever attempted to rectify. He does Italian American, Boston, High-T Charlie Kelly and a Venom impression alongside a dozen other accents and voices.

There's a big spoiler at the end of the latest one that's going to ruin the fun as well which is a shame. What a daft movie.

Cat People (1982)

A batshit mental remake of the 1940s classic directed by Paul Schrader with fantastic gratuitous nudity and a bit of good old practical effect gore. Natasha Kinski is the main character and her arc can be described as church clothes to full buff. John Heard aka the Da from Home Alone aka Vin Makazian is the male lead which is quite funny when the sex scenes start.

A film which wouldn't be made now and probably shouldn't have been made then. Very entertaining.

Might need to watch the Cat People remake again. Been about thirty years, but I remember it being quite dull despite all the scud, and I'm sure my tastes will have changed since then.

I seem to remember Stephen King saying that the original Cat People was one of his favourite films, so I should give that a go too.

Free Guy (Disney+)

6/10. Enjoyable enough caper set in a video game. If you don't play PlayStation or (like me) live with people that do, this won't be for you. Much of the humour is game-based.

Basic story - a background character in a GTA-style game called Free City develops as an intelligent AI having fun and adventures trying to impress Jodie Comer. Outside of the game, Comer is a programmer who believes that the game creators stole her code and is trying to prove it.

Lots of comedy and general good fun, but my parents would never get it or like it.

The wean was desperate to see that, but pulled out at the last minute, so I ended up watching it in the cinema with his (elderly and not tech-savvy) gran.

She seemed to enjoy it, but I did feel the need to explain some of the concepts at regular intervals!

No Time To Die - 6.5/10

Enjoyable outing for Bond, Craig is fantastic in the role but I thought the story lets him down throughout, especially the middle to end. He really does capture Bond brilliantly though and I think his will go down as the most interesting and complex approach to the role.
That said, I genuinely have no idea why Remi Maleks character was motivated to do anything he did after the opening scene aside from him just being a baddie. Seemed criminally underserved as a character. The Russian scientist was a cliché too.
Ana de Armas was fantastic in her short time on screen and could easily support a spin off of her finding her way in the world of spies. The new 007 was fine without being overly interesting, seemed like they played that character as safely as possible but I'd be interested in seeing a version of that character continuing.
In terms of what they do next, I think Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Henry Cavil would be great shouts if you were casting 10 years ago but I think they'll go the opposite way now and show a much younger Bond learning the ropes. Especially after 15 years of Craig's (fantastic) depiction of a haunted, cold Bond.
