What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Venom (2018) dir. Ruben Fleischer

Tom Hardy's line reading in this remains one of the most bizarre performances I've ever seen in a movie and it would be far worse if they ever attempted to rectify. He does Italian American, Boston, High-T Charlie Kelly and a Venom impression alongside a dozen other accents and voices.

There's a big spoiler at the end of the latest one that's going to ruin the fun as well which is a shame. What a daft movie.

Cat People (1982)

A batshit mental remake of the 1940s classic directed by Paul Schrader with fantastic gratuitous nudity and a bit of good old practical effect gore. Natasha Kinski is the main character and her arc can be described as church clothes to full buff. John Heard aka the Da from Home Alone aka Vin Makazian is the male lead which is quite funny when the sex scenes start.

A film which wouldn't be made now and probably shouldn't have been made then. Very entertaining.

Might need to watch the Cat People remake again. Been about thirty years, but I remember it being quite dull despite all the scud, and I'm sure my tastes will have changed since then.

I seem to remember Stephen King saying that the original Cat People was one of his favourite films, so I should give that a go too.

Free Guy (Disney+)

6/10. Enjoyable enough caper set in a video game. If you don't play PlayStation or (like me) live with people that do, this won't be for you. Much of the humour is game-based.

Basic story - a background character in a GTA-style game called Free City develops as an intelligent AI having fun and adventures trying to impress Jodie Comer. Outside of the game, Comer is a programmer who believes that the game creators stole her code and is trying to prove it.

Lots of comedy and general good fun, but my parents would never get it or like it.

The wean was desperate to see that, but pulled out at the last minute, so I ended up watching it in the cinema with his (elderly and not tech-savvy) gran.

She seemed to enjoy it, but I did feel the need to explain some of the concepts at regular intervals!

No Time To Die - 6.5/10

Enjoyable outing for Bond, Craig is fantastic in the role but I thought the story lets him down throughout, especially the middle to end. He really does capture Bond brilliantly though and I think his will go down as the most interesting and complex approach to the role.
That said, I genuinely have no idea why Remi Maleks character was motivated to do anything he did after the opening scene aside from him just being a baddie. Seemed criminally underserved as a character. The Russian scientist was a cliché too.
Ana de Armas was fantastic in her short time on screen and could easily support a spin off of her finding her way in the world of spies. The new 007 was fine without being overly interesting, seemed like they played that character as safely as possible but I'd be interested in seeing a version of that character continuing.
In terms of what they do next, I think Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Henry Cavil would be great shouts if you were casting 10 years ago but I think they'll go the opposite way now and show a much younger Bond learning the ropes. Especially after 15 years of Craig's (fantastic) depiction of a haunted, cold Bond.

The Departed (2006)

Just magnificent from start to finish and gave Scorsese his long awaited Oscar win.

Brilliant acting from Di Caprio, Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg, Farmiga, Sheen, Baldwin...everybody!

It even has a guy from Paisley in it, trying hard to keep the smile off his face.

I know it's a remake of a Japanese film (Infernal Affairs) and I really need to get around to watching it.

However, for everyone who hasn't seen The Departed, give it a watch, it's outstanding.

ETA it also stars a not so youthful Ray Winstone!

Old (entirely legal download, officer) - a group of holidaymakers at an exclusive resort find themselves trapped at a mysterious cove, where they begin to age by roughly two years per hour.

I'm a fan of M. Night Shyamalan, and he's made some masterful films in the past, but it's mystifying how he can still be capable of producing real amateurish tat that looks like it came from film school undergraduates with a bit of cash. The camerawork is just fucking annoying despite the picturesque backdrop, the dialogue is trite, and the acting is often stiff despite the presence of some quality thesps, implying poor direction from Night. The (presumably digital) aging effects often look weird, and are occasionally ineffective. There are also a couple of big shock reveals that are so deeply obvious that literally nobody would be surprised, so it's irritating that the effort has been made to build up to them in the first place.

The story here is typical Shyamalan/Twilight Zone high-concept stuff, but doesn't go anywhere interesting after establishing the premise and, worst of all, it's Airbender/Lady in the Water boring-bad rather than The Happening hilarious-bad. Disappointing, and the kind of thing that's hard to defend when the inevitable Shyamalan trash-talk starts.

No time to die, 7.5/10

Enjoyable enough and certainly better than the last one but no where near the elite levels of Casino Royale and Skyfall.

The film felt more balanced by having 3 very prominent female characters and probably opens them up to spin offs or recurring cameos.

I think we all know who the tame CIA replacement for Felix will be

I'm a huge Scorsese fan, but this one for me is one of his stinkers.  See also Shutter Island.

I think it's shit that this was the one they finally gave him an Oscar for.

The Terminal. 7/10

Guy is stuck in airport because of war breaking out in his home country. Finds love but dingys it in favour of keeping a promise to his dad.

Probably some people find it boring but I could literally watch Tom Hanks clean his kitchen and vacuum his stairs and find him entertaining.

Yes Martin, we get it.....

eta: I mind when I went to the cinema to see it, and Martin Sheen's character takes the header off the building.  When he lands there is this huge comedy spray of blood like something from a Monty Python film.  I burst out laughing in this quiet, full auditorium.  I don't think I was popular.

Problem with going back to Bond's early days, casino royale pretty much showed him just getting his 00 status, how much further do they go back and what will it really show?

Alright, Bond spoilers ahead. You've been warned.

I've only seen them once so I could be wrong, but in Skyfall, didn't Judi Dench say that Bond had somehow been picked up by the secret service not long after his parents died? He ended up fostered with Blofeld for a short while, so presumably that was after he killed his father/faked his own death. I don't think there's any mention of this Bond being in the Navy (although I think he still has the title of Commander), but either way, it sounds like there's the possibility for an interesting story.

Just speculation. I don't think they'd ever do it. By this point, they're absolutely welded to James Bond the 00 agent, and it'd be a huge risk to do anything else.
