What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Carlitos Way and The Untouchables. Both very enjoyable. Rare for a film to jump so high on my all-time list as Carlitos Way did after just one viewing, really superb. I'm not sure anyone has ever had more fun with a role than Sean Penn had with the crooked lawyer.

Untouchables was also good but can't help but feel Costner was miscast, maybe just slightly too young at the time of filming. And I'd liked to have seen them use Andy Garcia more rather than the comic relief accountant guy.

Carlitos Way 9.5/10, Untouchables 8.5/10

Brian De Palma is the man.

I watched the Kubrick Lolita last night. All the performances are great especially Shelley Winters and it has some scenes with Kubrick magic but it pales in comparison with the book. The film Humbert is a lot more vulnerable than the book version who is an out and out evil b*****d but is funny enough that the reader never completely hates him. The jump from black and white and fairly conventional direction in this and Dr Strangelove to 2001 just a few years later must have been mindblowning to experience at the time.

Even DePalma's worst films are worth a look for the visuals and the sweeping, mental way he tells stories. Very much like Hitchcock on crack.

I've got a copy of the documentary about him on my desk waiting to be watched.

The Card Counter

Paul Schrader directs Oscar Isaac as an ex con professional card player with a dark past. Schrader loves delving into the ugly side of America and this is about as ugly as it gets. After Many Saints Of Newark it was good to see a film just released which actually felt like like a real film. Highly recommend (there is a high quality version on Torrent sites).

Martin Scorsese is listed as the first of many executive producers which presumably means he was responsible for getting it funded. The superb soundtrack is by Robert Levon Been from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club who I had forgot existed.

Judas and the Black Messiah (2021) dir. Shaka King

I read a lot of people mad that the story focuses on William O'Neal more than Fred Hampton but the way they're portrayed makes O'Neal's character far more interesting than Hampton who is the titular Black Messiah. Also LaKeith Stanfield was robbed of Best Supporting Actor. Kaluuya is great but fairly one tone (as a result of his character) whereas Stanfield is brilliant in the conflicted informant role. Would recommend even if the second act drags a fair whack.

The Big Lebowski (1998) dir. The Coen Brothers

Rewatched this for the first time in about a decade and what else is there to say other than it's a classic? I do appreciate more after watching other Coen Brothers how The Dude feels like a rejection of loads of other Coen characters in that he's frequently offered temptations and rejects them pretty much constantly and never changes. Also it's still really funny. John Goodman is superb.

Not sure why LaKeith Stanfield was even nominated for "Supporting" Actor when he is clearly joint lead. His character being mentioned in the title gives that away. Still, the Oscars often seem to have weird nominations like that.

You can only put forward one leading actor a per film so maybe Daniel Kaluuya got that.

Breakdown (1997)

All action thriller starring Kurt Russell who finds himself in a nightmare situation when his wife is kidnapped after their car breaks down while driving in the Californian desert. From that point it becomes like a Deliverance meets Duel scenario as he desperately tries to find his wife leading to a tense and very dramatic climax.

8/10

Kaluuya was also nominated for (and indeed won) Best Supporting Actor.

I would imagine the reason is that the Best Actor category this year was a two man race, from about September last year it looked like a procession for Chadwick Boseman with a very small outside chance for Anthony Hopkins, who ultimately won.

By comparison, Supporting Actor was a lot less clear until we got into 2021. So anybody who could reasonably swing their performance as supporting rather than lead made sense to submit in that category instead.

Just came back from the cinema after seeing a very late showing of No Time To Die. Enjoyed it probably the most since Casino Royale.

  • It's very long and it only slightly shows its length
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge's writing is fairly obvious especially in how every woman is written
  • Lea Seydoux and the actress that played the wean were great alongside Craig.
  • Speaking of Craig he looked relieved to finally be done (he has to be done now)
  • Rami Malek was as good as I thought. He's a weird fella although I'll have to watch some of his older movies because it really looks like those awful prosthetics from Bohemian Rhapsody have fucked his face
  • Ana De Armas is terrific with less than 5 minutes of screentime. Superb.

Definitely run, don't walk, to see the latest 007 joint.

Absolutely criminal, that.

Ah, seems a bit of a stupid rule. So only one of Thelma and Louise could have been nominated?

Its possible have changed the rules, as I don't think its happened since, but  both Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon got Best Actress nominations for Thelma and Louise.

Thought I recognised the name LaKeith Stanfield - he was excellent (along with everyone else) in Sorry to Bother You, and Get Out. I see he's been in a few more films that I've been meaning to watch, so thanks for the mention, chaps. One of the great things about this thread is having films/actors brought to your attention that might otherwise have slipped by.

Just as he was mentioned LaKeith Stanfield is one of my current favourite actors, usually a stand out in every thing he's in and one of the few actors I would watch in anything.

I'm sure I read somewhere that they were both submitted as Supporting Actors but I have no idea how the Academy works. Stanfield was robbed though. The best peformer in a movie of great performances.

Also, yeah, Stanfield is superb. Superb in Judas, very good in Get Out and the underrated star of Atlanta.

Just watched No Time to Die, really enjoyed it, I grew up watching Connery and Moore but I think Daniel Craig is my favourite Bond.

Glad Ana de Armas is only in it briefly otherwise I wouldn't have been able to focus on the movie itself.

She was absolutely brilliant. Beautiful, funny as f**k, and an absolute badass.

I would happily watch a spin-off movie with that character, it could be the breakout they didn't manage with Halle Berry's Jinx when Die Another Day turned out to be a disaster.

She was incredible, I was mesmerized by her.

I knew nothing about Bond other than that one trailer which has been playing for years now so I just assumed she was gonna have a bigger role. It was kind of perfect as a small part though and, imo, when the film was at its best. It did lose me shortly after that though and didn't really recover.
