No Time To Die.

I'm certain this will split opinion, for a number of reasons. I fucking loved it, though I am a massive Bond fan, so much so that I've seen Die Another Day in its entirety more than once.

Ana de Armas may be the most beautiful woman in the world, although Lea Seydoux definitely has a say in the destination of that trophy.

Just back from seeing it and thought it was absolutely smashing. A fitting way to finish the Daniel Craig era. Thought the Ana De Armas part was a bundle of fun to watch and they work really well together. Their performance in Knives Out is wonderful too.

Christ I love a Bond film.

NO TIME TO DIE

Solid feature, nothing like as arse-numbing as you'd expect at that runtime, AND James Bond actually kills the baddie.

Not often you'll see James Bond, Hugh Dennis and Wallace and Gromit sharing screen time, you'd have to say.

Wraps everything up for the next one quite nicely, although that's an awful lot of recasting needing doing now.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) dir. Wes Anderson

I used to find Wes really fucking annoying but maybe I'm softening. This was great and has a lot of heart in it. Visually stunning as always in his signature style and some terrific performances and cameos with Ralph Fiennes excelling as the star of the show. I really dug the period setting the most though, watching this tale unfold as Europe descends into fascism leads to a finale that was really affecting. I definitely need to go back and rewatch Life Aquatic now I think about it as both times I've watched I've been blitzed on something and tuned out until that final moment with Murray in the sub.

I did wonder if there would actually be another one?

Spoiler

I guess you could have a 007, but I don’t see how there can be a James Bond now they’ve killed him off.

Spoiler

Maybe they'll have it that the spys name is james bond, but their real name is never spoken, like how M threatened to shoot Bond in QoS was it? So basically every 007 male will be James Bond

Defo enjoyed that, typically good Bond action scenes, liked the idea of a more involved supporting cast as well,

The Craig era storylines were a reboot on the character, recycling origin stories and coming across SPECTRE/Blofeld etc. for the first time.

So effectively it could be rebooted again, though you don't want to be doing that on a regular basis of course. Be interesting to see where they go with it

I went for a dynamite double bill tonight.

Napoleon Dynamite.

A geeky guy at high school in America gets up to all kinds of shit.

Black Dynamite

Blaxploitation spoof. A bad-ass Vietnam vet attempts to clean up his neighbourhood by kicking out all the pushers and pimps.

Both of these get 10 out of 10. So that makes 20 out of 10, unless I've fucked up my sums.

Just came back from the cinema after seeing a very late showing of No Time To Die. Enjoyed it probably the most since Casino Royale.

  • It's very long and it only slightly shows its length
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge's writing is fairly obvious especially in how every woman is written
  • Lea Seydoux and the actress that played the wean were great alongside Craig.
  • Speaking of Craig he looked relieved to finally be done (he has to be done now)
  • Rami Malek was as good as I thought. He's a weird fella although I'll have to watch some of his older movies because it really looks like those awful prosthetics from Bohemian Rhapsody have fucked his face
  • Ana De Armas is terrific with less than 5 minutes of screentime. Superb.

Definitely run, don't walk, to see the latest 007 joint.

Deliberately sat through the credits to see if they closed with ‘James Bond will return’, and happily they did. No danger he’d ever be killed off. The next film will probably be some retro piece from the 1950’s or 1960’s so they can get back to the boozing and womanising that was conspicuously absent from NTTD, before a relaunch of the whole thing sometime down the line. There’s so long between them now that everyone will have forgotten what happened in NTTD anyway.

Many Saints Of Newark

A film every Soprano's fan should see. Really enjoyed it.  Would've preferred it to have been made into a mini series though so they could fit more in. I can't remember how to work the spoilers tab so won't get into any the film's details but there was two main things I learned that I didn't know from The Sopranos.

9/10

I suppose it’s whether they see the films as being about 007 or about James Bond. As a character, they have just killed him off.

There is a good chance you’re right and they go back and do some kind of retro one though, I didn’t think of that.

I kind of thought they set it up for Lashana Lynch to take over the role though, by giving her the 007 and carrying on with that. I’m not sure how successful that would be though.

Was chatting about this with my flatmate after and I think they'll soft reboot the series like they've done with Batman and Spider-Man. Will be interesting to see if they bring along a lot of the supporting cast. They could've just confirmed the fan theory about the Bond name but obvs they deliberately negated that in Skyfall.

I think the boozing and womanising, at least the glorification of it, might be on the way out. I've seen a lot written about how Waller-Bridge being on the writing team meant this stuff was toned down but I think they wanted to do it anyway hence why she was brought on. Was quite funny that Daniel Craig was probably the most scantily clad character in the whole thing.

Who do we reckon is going to be the next Bond? The four I keep seeing suggested are: Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, and Henry Cavill. Personally think since Cavill has played Superman they should let an American do Bond. Make Kenny Powers the next Bond.

They mentioned on QI that the first Bond adaption was for American TV, with a secret agent called Jimmy Bond who worked for the CIA. As for Nomi, they're probably monitoring reactions to the new 007 to see if it's worth doing something with her in the future, like they did with Halle Berry's character in one of Pierce Brosnan's films. I can't see her getting her own films either, but it might be nice to see more of the other double-O's now, considering the last few films became ensemble pieces, and worked very well.

Anyway, I saw Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time To Die for the first time in the past few days. I thought they got better as they went on TBH; I can see why Spectre stretched credibility for some folk, but I was OK with it, and thought there were a few moments in Skyfall that set off my bullshit meter more. Still all very good, though, and I liked how we get to see Bond's gradual journey from an ice-cold murderer in Casino Royale, to something approximating a relatable human being by the end of No Time To Die. A very good series of films, filled with plenty of terrific set pieces and some stunning cinematography, and (partially due to being given opportunities that were denied to the other actors) I think Daniel Craig's my new favourite Bond.

No idea where they go from here if (of course) they're keeping the James Bond character. Considering we were introduced to this one as a "dinosaur", maybe the adventures of young Bond?

Not enough jokes or Blofeld for me, and the henchmen, though cartoon cutout, were humourless, apart from the eye jokes. I don't think the James Bond myth is suited to attempting serious drama. The 2 hours 40 minutes fair rollicked along though.

No time to die.

I actually quite enjoyed it for the most part. Ana de Armas stole the show and I am literally head over heels in love with the lassie. The run time was a worry beforehand as I was a bit tired but wasn't an issue. Unsure where the franchise goes from here. I'd have put a bullet in Malek's head early doors. I just cannot take to him as an actor.

Bond spoiler chat...

been thinking a bit more about what they could do with Bond going forward after the conclusion of NTTD...

can anyone see them expanding into a Marvel Cinematic Universe style direction?

  • They could give Lashana Lynch her own films without resting the entire franchise on it, test the waters. FWIW I thought she was a perhaps a bit... boring. I mean she was perfectly fine but not spectacular, and I suspect it's mostly because the film didn't give her much to work with, so I hope if they do give her her own films, they have some good writers on board
  • Films tracking Mathilde's rise into being a secret agent

  • Spin-offs for Ana de Armas/the CIA side of things. It's a pity they killed Felix off for this type of thing as he was a good established character in the Bond world but it could work regardless
  • Then obviouslt there is the resurrect James Bond option. Either by completely rebooting the franchise and starting again again, a la Casino Royale; or actually just bringing him back from the dead somehow, Alien Resurrection style?
