James Bond l, You Ony Live Twice  last night . Decent stuff as Bond saves the us from WW3 and wins the girl  , but it's  looking to laok a bit dated nowadays  especially some of the special effects. Good performance from  Donald Peasence as  Blofeld , interestingly it also, featured Charles Gray who  went on to play Blofeld in Diamonds are Forever and  Burt Kwouk who was previously in Goldfinger and the  original version of Casino Royale

I also watched this recently and it annoyed me, although to be fair I'm not a fan of gangster movies feel like it's been done to death, i actually asked my girlfriend to Google to see if Guy Richie has a terminal illness as it felt he was trying way too hard to squeeze in as much Guy Richie stuff as possible.

Hugh Grant nailed his role as a total sleazebag though.

I remember Kermode and Mayo (podcast) hated it but stand-in Robbie Collin enjoyed it and that he was a fan of stuff like Snatch, Layer Cake, Long Good Friday. I could easily see how it just wouldn’t land for some folk. What works for me is that the bumbling, downtrodden, shambolic nature of many of the hoods is much more true to life than in more straight-laced crime films.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (Amazon prime) 9/10

New Zealand comedy from Jojo Rabit director Taika Waititi.

Uncle Hec played wonderfully by a grizzled Sam Neill goes on an adventure with juvie foster kid Ricky while avoiding search parties, police and creating national news coverage.

Very funny heartwarming film that should be checked out.

Ha yeah the shambolic side of that life was reasonably accurate, i used to run about with a guy whose step father was a dealer and some of his associates were absolute idiots (some were scary dudes) basically their life was a game of idiots roulette until they eventually got caught and sent down, then on release they would do it all over again.

Some pupils recommended this to me. Apparently they watch it in English for whatever reason! Will get it on tonight.

Loved this. The chemistry between Ricky and Heck was class. One of my favourite films I've seen recently. Saw Empire named it their best of 2016 and it's NZ's highest grossing film.

Le Mans 66

Christian Bale somehow manages to mangle an English accent. Some lovely 60s cars and sunglasses on show. Just a decent Hollywood “based on real events” effort where you don’t need any interest in the subject matter to enjoy it and it’s the personality clashes and human stories that really matter. Blink and you’ll miss it appearances by the original The Stig too.

8/10

Ocean's 11 . Slick remake of the Frank Sinatra rat pack original .Not. A lot of acting required from Clooney  ( a role turned down by Bruce Willis ) and Pitt ,  Andy Garcia as the comedy bad guy is good , Don Cheadle's accent is awful and seems completely out of place . Some decent turns  from the support, also there's a nod to the original with Angie Dickinson in the crowd at the boxing match  . Watchable enough

Watched this with the missus and groaned at his terrible accent and she told me she thought he was English and was putting on the American accent he uses in other films

Look Who's Back

German language comedy film where Hitler appears in modern times on the site of his former bunker and is dismayed at the state he finds his country in. He is found by recently sacked TV reporter who sees him as an opportunity to make a name for himself. The reporter takes Hitler around Germany where he is actually filmed ad libbing with real members of the public who don't realise he is an actor and think he is a comedian or impressionist.  Some of these interactions are quite eye opening both in support and opposition of Hitler. Funny take on 'that' scene from Downfall also. I liked it a lot.........8/10.

ETA.......It's on Netflix.

Rings - belated sequel to the American remake of Ringu. People are still watching that ker-razy videotape and getting bumped off, dontchano.

Pretty much ignores the insipid second film, and has Darlene's boyfriend from Roseanne running university experiments on students who've watched the tape. Pretty mediocre, run-of-the-mill horror movie with a tired plot that feels overfamiliar, even down to the twists. BigFatTabbyBoy fell asleep halfway through and didn't even ask how it ended when he woke up, which is pretty damning.

Shockingly, I tried to buy a copy of The Ring and discovered that it's yet to be released here on Blu-ray. What's that all about.

For literally the 50-oddth time, The Shawshank Redemption.

Sure there flaws in the story (Andy's amazing luck with the bible, the shoes and the posters) but Darabont's screenplay is wonderfully poetic and there are fantastic performances from Robbins, Freeman and Whitmore.

I'll never tire of watching it.

Fairly standard cops and robbers type film. A decent enough watch but doesnt really do anything to stand out from the rest of these type of films.

Felt the same. Was an enjoyable watch but if it wasn't for the well known faces a lot of it was what I'd expect from a straight to dvd cop/conspiracy film

A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
Still one of my favorite horror movies and one of the first films I ever watched growing up.

Just watched Wes Craven's Last House on the Left for the first time in 30 years.
That was dark.
Wes must have taken some seriously good drugs

The poster thing never bothered me too much; I figured it just showed how complacent and lazy the guards were. Plus, he was under the warden's protection, so they weren't looking too hard. However, I vaguely remember that the original short story had him completing the tunnel and not using it for something like 20 years, purely out of the kind of institutionalised fear that gripped Brooks Hatlen. I could appreciate what King was going for, but that's a wee bit much.

Craven was a vicious sadist in his early work; The Hills Have Eyes is similarly nasty. He'd had the edges rubbed off by the time he got to A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Some of the actors from Las House on the Left have unpleasant stories about working with him, unfortunately.

Kermode described it as "an A-list B-Movie", which seemed pretty spot on tbh.
