This could have done with some serious time shaving. So many big payoffs to scenes lost me way before they actually happened. Which is a shame because there's a lot to like here. The humour is pretty well placed, a lot of the visuals are stunning and it's a delightfully freaky concept which for the most part pulled off well. Especially by the female cast members who really carry this.

But it just didn't make the impact it was supposed to make with me.

The Swimmer (1968)

Saw this about 30 odd years ago and probably thought it was a 6 or 7 at best but watching it with fresh eyes it's easy to see why it's become something of a cult classic. Burt Lancaster is on a mission to swim in as many of his friends swimming pools  to get back home. It all starts off in a fun way but the mood starts to darken getting clues to his life at each of the pools and you realise that this is a broken man, delusional and on the verge of a breakdown. Terrific stuff.

Finally got round to seeing The Death of Stalin. I had extraordinarily high expectations and was worried that it would come in under. I shouldn't have worried. It's hilariously funny while managing to be utterly terrifying throughout, all the more so when I remember certain aspects of how it played out in real life had to be dialled back to keep it believable. Armando Iannucci is a genius. The movie is a triumph. 10/10.

AFAICR, the only other movie I've given full marks in recent years is Paddington 2. Sounds about right.

Great performance by Rami Malek. That's the only positive. Extremely shallow development of Mercury and his bandmates were sold horribly short to the point that they were little more then extras.

The time jumps were poorly executed and the whole film was rushed.

That's true but he's 88yrs old in real life so must be close to how he actually is. I did enjoy his partying with the senoritas though and Andy Garcia's cameo as the Cartel boss. Was that one of the Salamanca twins from Breaking Bad playing a cartel member later on in the film?

The Dirt - the Motley Crue biopic currently on Netflix.

I have to admit I approached it with a degree of trepidation after having been disappointed by Bohemian Rhapsody which bore signs of a band with too much say in the project and over-keen to protect their legacy - I can only imagine how bad it would have been had they indulged Brian May who apparently wanted to kill Freddie Mercury off halfway through the film with the second half devoted to their post 1991 career as their own tribute band.

Thankfully, the Crue are terrible human beings and don't give a shit what people think of them which makes for a way more entertaining film, although it has to be said some of the attitudes on display make for uncomfortable viewing in 2019.

Show-stealing performance from Game of Thrones' Iwan Rheon as misanthropic guitar player Mick Mars - one of the funniest moments of the film for me was when the Tommy Lee character gives him a big cheesy "DUUUUUUDDE!" and goes for a rockstar high five only to be met with a malevolent death stare.

Simon Amstell film, v woody allenesque with Amstell getting someone to play what was really obviously a version of himself and then play out all his neuroses and self doubt AND with a predeliction for much younger partners! Decent, especially for a debut. Just think he needs to work up some new things to worry about. (Curzon)

Ray & Liz 8/10

Bloody loved this, prettttty grim tale of two v neglectful parents living in very very unpleasant conditions in the midlands in the 1980s. Filmed in 16mm and you can really tell it was made by a photographer with the particular framing and use of focus and all that. Think it stays the right side of misery porn tho, both because there are some genuine lol moments -haven’t laughed as much at one particular scene in the cinema for ages - and also because it was Ray & Liz’s son himself that made the film. It’s the guy who brought out the book with the photos like this one...

What Men Want 3.5/10

The gender-switched remake of What Women Want that everyone has been absolutely gagging for these last 20 years. This time, at least the leads are likeable, if not remotely relatable. Taraji P Hinson makes a completely unexpected comeback without any of the folk americana records he’s known for *adjusts earpiece* and after she’s passed over for a deserved promotion in a sports agency she is, thanks to the plot, able to hear the inner thoughts of all men. I mean, it was predictable, and quite awkward at times, and I totally failed to get all the references to US sports stars that the plot kind of hinges on, but it really wasn’t terrible like Night School was. Hinson is good at physical comedy, much like Melissa McCarthy. I’ve seen worse films aimed at the black US audience (yes, Night School, but also shit like Uncle Drew) and I know I’m not he audience but hell, I watch all these things because it’s free and so that you don’t have to. I laughed out loud at least 10 times! Best joke was “I didn’t think black people drank tea since Get Out”. It was shit, don’t get me wrong, but it was not as shit as it could have been, it was relatively good-hearted, and it was better than Night School, which was a fucking abomination. (cinema)

Triple Frontier 2/10

Netflix’s prestige heist thriller, with an undoubtedly A-list cast - Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Humdrum - and it was not incompetent. But even though they spent a fucking shit-ton of money on it, not just on the cast but also on the locations, it wasn’t any good. You expect Stupid Decisions that drive the plot and sometimes you can forgive them if the film is fun and exciting, but this was the opposite of that. Boring, annoying, stupid, I’ve more enjoyed taking a shit countless times. 

The Dawn Wall 6/10

Can be seen as a prequel to Free Solo. Our hero, a child who was reclusive but found something in climbing that he could get fully into, with a girlfriend (or two) who while seemingly supporting him emotionally and physically, really only hold him back (is this familiar) attempts to climb the Dawn Wall of El Capitan. Except this isn’t free climbing, he’s taking six weeks to climb it and camping in hanging tents along the way and using ropes and those stabby things you put into the rock to keep you from falling, and he’s got a partner up there with him. OK, so he’s lost his left index finger in an accident and this really affects his ability to climb but it’s so much less impressive than what Alex Hunnold did. If I’d not seen Free Solo first I would have been more impressed but the cinematography of the climb is nowhere near as impressive either. Worth a watch though. (Netflix)

Coco - 10/10. An absolute masterpiece and Pixar back on top form. That song remember me is a heartbreaker.

Avengers: Infinity War - 8/10. Just 3 hours of explosion and action. Good time killer and clearly setting up for Endgame more than anything

The Lego Movie - 7/10. Fun to watch, just a time killer whilst flicking through nowtv for something to watch.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald - 4/10. Sweet f**k this was a difficult watch, it dragged on and on, and there was no real enjoyment unlike the previous one. I get it’s setting up the next one in the series, but at least Make it fun as a stand alone.
