Fudge
Disagree... free whisky is the best whisky. Edit: Incidentally, I love Christmas because that's when my suppliers give me lots of free whisky. If someone gave me a free case of Carling, it wouldn't be the best lager I've had
Mr Rational
If someone gave me a free case of Carling, it wouldn't be the best lager I've had I won a case of McEwans Export. I'm drinking it because it's free, it's about the best I can say about it.

Munter
Out of interest, has anyone else ever done Whisky Auction sites? Aye. What's up?
Mr Rational
My mate normally gets a bottle from them. He's got quite the collection as well.
Savage Henry
Currently on the go: Jura 16 y.o - distinctly mediocre. Glenlivet 15 y.o French Oak Reserve - most enjoyable.
gannonball
Currently on the go: Jura 16 y.o - distinctly mediocre. Glenlivet 15 y.o French Oak Reserve - most enjoyable. I agree with the above. I find jura quite mediocre in general. Glenlivet offers decent value all round. My favourite being of late being the nadurra olaroso. It was a cask strength sherry one which needed more water than usual but amazing stuff, not to everyones taste due to it being a total sherry bomb.
Hedgecutter
Here you go people: Volunteer whisky tasters wanted for scientific research Participants at the event, which is free and takes place at the prestigious Royal College Of Surgeons of Edinburgh, will take a written test about personality traits and then taste special samples of whisky. A previous knowledge of whisky is not required – an open mind and adventurous spirit is all you need.
Le Tout P'ti FC
Cardboard and cabbage tones mostly went the way of hot toddy filler in our holiday cottage last week. So, aye, lesson learned!

supermik
Dont know why but whisky just seems to burn a hole through me. Have tried a few and they all do the same. People keep saying that whisky goes down smoothly but all it does to me is burn. A bit gutting to be honest as i would love to really like it as some of the aromas from it are sensational.

supermik
Taliskers, normal, Skye and Storm. Even the likes Dalwhinnie and Balvenie. They all just taste like firewater for some reason. I can easily drink the likes of dark rum or any brandies without any ill effects.
Mr Rational
Picked this bad boy up from the airport the other day. It's a limited edition and only available on export so deciding to keep it at the moment rather than fire into it. So I'm drinking this instead.
jmothecat
Bought a few whiskies in preparation for Christmas and I've been sampling them over the past few days. Got an 18 year old Chivas. I'm quite fond of blends so it's nice to have an expensive blend. Also bought a bourbon for a change, Woodford Reserve. Quite enjoying it.
Mr Rational
Just bought this. It's not that bad, £17 so worth the price. I fancy spending a bit of money on something fancier after Christmas.

I fancy spending a bit of money on something fancier after Christmas. I was in the Bon Accord at Charing Cross on Friday and they have a bottle of this on the top shelf. At £900 a half it could be just the thing you are looking for! And there is a least a couple of measures out of it, so somebody hasn't been scared off by the price.
Mr Rational
£900 is a bit steep, was thinking of more about the £100 mark. Then again, I might just save up for something really, really decent.
milton75
Really expensive whisky and brandy in bars is pointless, and unless you're the person that gets them to crack open the bottle/you're certain there's a high turnover of the stuff being bought, pretty much only marks out the buyer as a fanny. Once open the whisky will start to oxidise and flavour will be lost. This will increase over time, but will be reasonably significant after just 6 months when you consider the subtleties of flavour involved. So if you're in the Bon Accord or The Grill or any of the other myriad whisky bars and feeling flush, take a good look at the bottle that's sitting there teasing you at £30+ per nip. Ask yourself how often other punters buy it and how long it's been open for. If you want to drink expensive whisky, buy the bottle for yourself, basically.
