I'm a complete whisky novice. I know nothing about it.

I'd like to try a few to get "into" it. Where should i start?

I used to hate whisky because any time I was given a dram, I would down it as if drinking a shot or vodka and so all I'd taste was the horrible burny nip as the alcohol went down my throat. Take a small sip (probably about a third of a single measure) in you mouth, gently move it around your mouth before swallowing. After you swallow, inhale, and then slowly exhale. It's only then you will taste the proper flavours of the whisky.

I know that people usually frown upon blended whiskies, but if you taste The Antiquary, you would soon change your mind. It is really nice and smooth.

It is totally different to the other whisky that I really like - Laphroaig. Burnt rubber?? Think you have to persevere man!!

Most blends are like petrol but the Black Bottle is a blend of the Islay malts and tastes better than a lot of malts I've tried for a third of the price

Had a couple of nips of Chivas Regal at my dad's last night and it was delicious, really smooth with no fire at the back of it - pricey though for a blend

Ledaig 20 year old

Found this in the kitchen cupboard a wee while back. No idea where it came from but it was responsible for getting me into malts.

Had a look for some info online at the time and all I could find was a bottle for sale on 'Royal Mile Whiskies' site for over £300.

Not the most complex of malts, hints of citrus, bit peppery, seaweed, vanilla or butterscotch sweetness and a subtle smokiness.

Still got 3 or 4 drams left in the bottle but when it's gone, it's gone. There's no chance of me paying that sort of money for any drink, no matter how good it is.

There are other Ledaig bottlings available and I saw the standard 10year old in a small grocery shop in Saltcoats at the weekend for under £18 so I might give that a try sometime.

Distillery: Tobermory

ABV: 40%

Discountinued but bottles turn up now and again on specialist sites at a fair old price.

My Rating. 7.5

A good introduction to the islands whiskies if you happen to find a bottle lurking in your kitchen cupboard.

Glenmorangie Original Ten Years Old. It's as smooth a whisky as you'll find.

I'll second this. A good whisky to start on as it's fairly easy to drink, reasonably priced and widely available.

Balvennie Doublewood for me. Delightfully mellow with a nutty sweetness combined with a cinamon spiciness along with a delicately proportioned layer of sherry which gives it a long and warming finish.

That's what it says on the blurb that comes with it. All I can say is that it's fucking brilliant and really hits the spot.

I got a bottle of this as a leaving present before Xmas and I'm yet to crack it open. I've got high hopes for it!

It's still a Highland malt though. The Loch Lomond distillery is also only about 20 minutes from Glasgow but is still classed as a Highland malt too.

Bit of false advertising there in my book. dry.gif

Get it punted to Lowland.

I've just picked up an 18 year old Speyside single malt at Lidl for £20, cracking price for an 18 year old. Best to try and pick one up before the weekend as they'll go quick.

That's a stock item selected by their buyer and labelled as lidl brand.

Bump.

Had the Auchentoshan earlier, I'm now on the Balblair. All medicinal as my throat is killing me.

Auchentoshan 3 wood is a particular favourite of mine.
