I'm quite fancying getting a bottle of whisky for once my exams are done but have no idea about how much I should be spending for something half decent. How much should I spending for something I should be able to enjoy without adding water or ice?

If you don't know what you like, just go to the supermarket or even coopy and get whatever malt's on the ~£20 - 25 special offer. There's usually one on.

I enjoy Black Bottle blend neat which is quite cheap (£15?) although it relies on you liking a bit of Islay peat/smoke. If it's for exams, just get a malt and treat yourself.

I'd personally go to the pub and buy a dram there to see if I liked it before committing to buying the bottle.

Black Bottle is good, but Johnnie Walker Black Label is superb.

97% of Scotch whisky sales are blends, that should tell you something. Always blended whisky for me. Single malts are like wine, vastly over rated.

As I said, I had the Johnny Walker BL last night and it was nice enough but I've yet to find a blend which competes with a decent malt imo - they just have this 'meh' after-taste. I'm snobbish with my drams, I know.

I would go for Dalmore, their 12 year old. it is quite a smooth whisky, not peaty, which can put alot of people of whisky. you will get that for about £40.

if unsure. go in to a shop which specialises in whisky (Robert Graham's, the whisky shop etc) and ask for some advice, i always do this and it inevitably leads to me leaving the shop half cut due to free tastings.

Cheers for the info Cammy. I realise whisky's quite a personal thing but for someone starting out I think it's worth a read. Going to give it a bash as its only £9 on amazon.

Picked up a half bottle of Glenlivet 12yo from Tesco earlier. Going to crack that open at half-time.

Is there anything you aren't completely wrong about?

I followed this advice and bought a bottle of Glenfiddich, 12 years old for £22. Going to have one after I've finished this beer.

Got given a bottle of Bladnoch 20 year old malt. 51%. Haven't cracked it open yet, but probably will by the weekend.dry.gif

Lucky Git!

That's a crackin bottle you've got there.

For those who like malts but fancy something you won't find in the supermarket, check out the links below.

Bladnoch frequently bottle single casks from other distilleries. Check out their forum for info. Bladnoch Forum
