Friedrich Engels Posted March 28, 2012 Share Posted March 28, 2012 apologies if this has been covered before but do any pie and bovrilites enjoy a wee dram. i am a bit of a whisky lover and thought that we could share our whisky experiences with a thread.Favorite whisky region, your favorite drams, best whisky shop, best whisky pub etc etc. i'll get the ball rolling, the wife got me a bottle of Dalmore distillery managers exclusive 1995 vintage from the whisky shop in Buchanan Galleries yesterday, haven't opened it yet. anyone tried this, i'm told it's a whisky shop exclusive. anyway my regular dram is Caol ila 12 yo, it is a very nice whisky and aint a bad price. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My own favourite region is Speyside for the various choice of single malt. However my own particular favourite single malt is Dalwhinnie 15 year old,closely followed by Glenfarclas 12 year old,Talisker 10 and Laguvulin 16. Over the years i've tried all the regions and the recognised six classic malts,Dalwhinnie 15, Talisker 10, Laguvulin 16,Cragganmore 12,Oban 14 and Glenkinchie 12 but always come back to the Dalwhinnie,although Craganmore is a very palatable malt. For a blend i look no further than a Chivas Regal 12 or if i'm looking for a blend for a special occasion a Chivas 18 or Royal Salute 21. Although other whiskys which I enjoy are talisker, royal lochnagar, highland park, springbank and the Glenrothes. I got a cracking deal three weeks ago at Edinburgh airport a litre of auchentoshan springwood and 70cl of the Glenrothes for £55. The best pub I've been in for whisky has to be whisky macs in Campbeltown. I've had a bottle of glenmorangie for 8 years which has never been opened. I've bern saving it for a special occasion and will be a while before I open it. Also got a bottle of against the grain wax and wane which I bought from oddbins in 2007. Happy drinking,hic!! yeah Chivas 18 and their royal Salute are the best of the blends i think. although they are quite dear for a blend they are well worth it IMO, very nice. i like Speyside whisky. my favorite being the Glenlivet, i got a bottle of their 21yo archive for my 30th last year. absolutely stunning whisky. i see you like the Glenfarclas 12yo too, i think that is a nice whisky also, iv'e never tried Cragganmore, but all the others i have, you are a man of taste the pub i like for the range of whisky they stock is the ben Nevis in the west end of Glasgow, for all that it is a big city, Glasgow is short on decent pubs that specialize in whisky. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My favourite is the 12 year old Glendronach, although I'm slightly biased as my granddad worked there. Balvenie would probably be my other day-to-day first choice. Other malts I like are Glenfiddich and Highland Park. I don't really 'do' Auchentoshan or Glenmorangie. As for the cheap shite, I quite like the taste of Scottish Leader. I've got two bottles of the 1998 in the cupboard but it's nowhere near as good as the '94. The select reserve is always a secret mix of a whole bunch of stuff and it changes so much year to year, I should know as my partner's dad is a stillman there. Islay's my favourite region by far but my malt of the moment goes to the Glendronach 15yo, just superb. At first I thought it was just a cheap blend but on further inspection and a quick Google I found it selling for over £300 on the Royal Mile Whisky website. Unfiortunately the bottle was already open or I could have made a few bob out of it. Since then I have really got into my drams and have about 7 or 8 bottles (all open) on the go. Haven't really got a favourite as such (it seems to change depending on my mood) but I'm really enjoying Highland park, Isle of arran, Laphroaig and Jura Superstition at the moment. My favourite region is definitely Islay and my favourite shop is Robbie's Drams in Ayr. There's always a good offer or two to be had in there and it's fairly local to me. I also enjoy other drams, mainly from Speyside but some others as well. Recently tried 'Amrut Indian Peated Malt' and it was excellent. Recently (at Christmas) I got a bottle of Jura Superstition. Glenlivet 12 year olds got me into it a few years back, before that whisky was pish for old men or Bourbon to put coke in, glad I came round. I live just over a mile from Dalmore, and I don't know whether is bias or not, but I'm quite fond of a few of theirs. Most of the regular Dalmore's (8 & 12 etc) are all a good dram, as is "The Black Pearl" (although this is an airport exclusive one) and the Black Isle. I also like a Jura, or a Highland Park. But top of the pile at the moment is The Old Pulteney from Wick. Their singles are pretty decent and right now I've just cracked into a birthday present of an Old Pulteney WK499: Isabella Fortuna. Strangely there's no age statement on it, so I've no idea how old it is, but I likes it! I'm not a big fan of anything too smoky or peaty though. Any good or just shite for tourists? Not sure about the claret casks and colouring changes, but certainly the Sherry or Brandy casks add a little extra to the flavour. You only seem to get it abroad, which is a bit o a bugger, but good reason to go on a holiday. In 2006 when I was on HMS Ramsey the captain only had two months left onboard and decided to take us away for a month on a jolly around the uk to his favourite ports for the world cup. One of his favourite places was Tobermory and he arranged a tour of the distillery for the ships company (only 38 onboard a mcmv and eight of those are gaurd). Within half a hour of being in Tobermory he had us in the distillery getting the tour. Was a class wee tour and afterwards everyone seemed to buy at least two bottles of tobermory as it was so cheap. We then piled into the pub next to the distillery where we proceeded to run the bar dry of Tobermory within four hours and had to get the distillery to bring more bottles next door. The captain later on was pished and on the karaoke when he declared his love for Scotland (middle englander) and that every one in the bar was to get a free drink on him. Because of the football and the visiting ship seemed to bring the locals out he ended up buying around 100 drams for everyone.
