The_Kincardine Posted April 24, 2013 Share Posted April 24, 2013 I know rules change, but when I were a lad*, the two things a sentence needed were a subject (sometimes implicit), and a predicate (verb). Most reference works agree. The conjunction issue is more one of style than pure grammar. *Vernacular phrase, not requiring proper grammar. Well parse, “Lightning precedes thunder.” and show your predicate, please. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
~~~ Posted April 24, 2013 Share Posted April 24, 2013 Good defence tactic though "It's cos I's Rangers innit" Accuses me of reporting him only because he is a Rangers fan, then a few minutes later accuses me of "arselicking" kincardine, who support Rangers I still blame the schools 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
WhiteRoseKillie Posted April 24, 2013 Share Posted April 24, 2013 Well parse, “Lightning precedes thunder.” and show your predicate, please. Lightning.n precedes.v thunder.n - OK? Subject - lightning Predicate - precedes Object - thunder. Predicate - what is the action? Subject - what/who is carrying out the action? Object - what/who is the action being done to or carried out upon. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Sad really. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jacksgranda Posted April 24, 2013 Share Posted April 24, 2013 Well parse, “Lightning precedes thunder.” and show your predicate, please. Is "precedes" not the predicate? Parsing, eh? That takes me back. Early 60's at primary school to be exact. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Apologies for dubious taste, but I'm sure my meaning is apparent. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Both of you are wrong because thunder and lightning both happen at the exact same time but distance is the factor here as sound travels slower than the speed of light . 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
