I know rules change, but when I were a lad*, the two things a sentence needed were a subject (sometimes implicit), and a predicate (verb). Most reference works agree. The conjunction issue is more one of style than pure grammar.

*Vernacular phrase, not requiring proper grammar. ;)

Well parse, “Lightning precedes thunder.” and show your predicate, please.

Good defence tactic though "It's cos I's Rangers innit"

Accuses me of reporting him only because he is a Rangers fan, then a few minutes later accuses me of "arselicking" kincardine, who support

Rangers

I still blame the schools

Lightning.n precedes.v thunder.n - OK?

Subject - lightning

Predicate - precedes

Object - thunder.

Predicate - what is the action?

Subject - what/who is carrying out the action?

Object - what/who is the action being done to or carried out upon.

Slight flaw in your idea, HB - he agrees with what QLP posted, the mods will remember what he got pulled for, so he'll look like a greetin' faced wee boy that's just been caught shoplifting, and then grasses up anybody he can think of cos it's jist no' ferr, shoor'n it's naw. :bairn

Sad really.

Is "precedes" not the predicate?

Parsing, eh? That takes me back. Early 60's at primary school to be exact.

I get the feeling that's like blaming the Synagogues for Al' Quaeda. Apologies for dubious taste, but I'm sure my meaning is apparent.

Yes it is, wee man. You can have a sweetie out of the jar.

(To be read in the voice of the teacher you always had to remind yourself not to call "Mum") ;)

Both of you are wrong because thunder and lightning both happen at the exact same time but distance is the factor here as sound travels slower than the speed of light :smartass .

That's secondary school stuff, science 'n 'at. Parsing (which was what we were talking about) is primary school stuff. :)
