th1stleandr0se Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 After driving for over thirty years I managed to get my first two traffic offences about a fortnight apart. I'm not complaining because I did actually break the rules but doing 37 in a 30 zone and going through a red light by 1.1 seconds seem close to the limit for prosecution. I was a bit annoyed as I thought I was in a 40 zone and I had made the decision to go through the light when the "bunnet" in front slowed down. That's beside the point. What I want to know is - what are the limits for prosecution? Has anyone been done for less than 37 or 1.1 seconds? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
ginge123 Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Isn't there a 10% leeway for speed? I don't drive so I'm not sure if that's a 'myth' or not. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Swampy Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Yeah, 37 in a 30 seems to be very much prosecutable I'm afraid. You might get away with the red light. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm the same but that was my understanding too. That would obviously only allow up to 33 though. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Al B Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 As far as im aware it's 10% of the limit plus 3mph, (so for example in a 30 zone you wont be prosecuted until you go above 36...in a 70 you're ok up to 80) to allow for slight inaccuracies/variations in speedometers and speed cameras. yoda Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Just think, if you had hit a small child at that speed then they probably would have died. I hope that rests on your conscience for a considerable amount of time. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
~~~ Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 I've got very little time for drivers who speed or don't appreciate the consequences of even a little "minor offence" Might have something to do with the driver last week who tried to catch a light before it turned red at a junction which resulted taking a turn too fast, mounting the pavement and hitting me while I was standing waiting to cross the road at the traffic lights leaving me with a broken arm and collar bone and spending 2 nights in hospital Apologise if I sound very bitter, that's because i'am Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Sweet Pete Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 According to a mate of mine who's a cop, his area of patrol, Helensburgh, allows 10% leeway on the speed limit plus 3 miles per hour. However, he did say that he does think that's them only and not universal (something to do with trying to avoid bringing unneccessary cases to the PF for prosecution). paul v Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Mate got done for beer driving last week, he was 100% sober but had a little drop in his system from the night prior. Total joke to lose licence for f**k all. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Gnash Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Speedometers are designed to overestimate your speed by 5-10% so there's less risk of inadvertently going over the limit. It's possible to be prosecuted for doing 31 in a 30 zone, but your speedo would probably have to show at least 33. Individual police forces may well allow a tolerance above the limit as well. Bet your mate has also claimed to be sober after a few pints too. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
The system is a joke and doesn#t catch folk that *actually drink drive* . OF course there should be a progressive scale when dishing out punishment. Liam was caught at 43 mgs, and got the same punishment that someone that was under the influence of 20 pints, and an actual danger. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Scary Bear Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Someone larger than you should have grabbed you from your car and thrown you to the pavement. It's no more than you deserve! That may happen if he doesn't pay the fine. I recall my pals ex-girlfriend got done for doing just over 30mph in a 30mph zone in Kirkcaldy. I forget what speed she was doing but it was low-30s and she was not best pleased as she was a fairly sensible driver relative to the rest of us.
