A quick google suggests 16% of people regularly keep a diary, and 40% of the population are scared of flying. About 5000 of the dead were probably scared of flying and recorded it somewhere. Flight numbers are generally 3 or 4 digits. I'd say if those 5000 were going on a flight, they would record it in their diary. I doubt the diary will have more than a 4 digit number of pages. We were watching a TV programme one night called "The British X Files" about records of alien sightings in the UK in the early 50s and some of them involved the RAF: "Here Dad, you were around at the time. Did you ever detect anything?" "Oh aye, son. An unidentified object on the radar when I was in West Germany" "What did you do?" "I reported it to the Flight Sergeant and he told me to forget about it" It was probably a spy plane or a flock of geese or something.
