The get fit, stay fit thread

Recommended Posts

Over the last few months I've been sorely tempted to build a home gym and I'm now staring to think that I may as well go for it. I don't have a garage, which would have been ideal, but have been looking at getting a decent sized shed.

Has anyone done similar and how do you find it? The main issue at the moment (like most things) appears to be cost. Having a look around and squat racks, plates etc. seem fairly reasonably priced when bought as a package. I've also come across a cable machine on ebay which is also a decent price. The main sticking point that I can find is dumbells which seem to be extortionate at the moment. I can go up to a decent weight at the gym but the cheapest full rack I've come across is priced well over £2k.
Get they adjustable ones? Take up less space and I assume more cost effective?

Tried buying a few extra bits and pieces to use at home so that when the snow kicks in here I'm still doing something. Almost everything is sold out and expected to be delivered in March at the earliest. Fucking wild.

My bench, bar and plates have been dispatched. Now hearing DPD have a significant backlog and no idea re delivery timescales. At least I've had shipping confirmation and can track it. Used Gorilla Sports about the middle of December then the border closures hit and DPD closed their European Road Freight Service (turns out Gorilla Sports warehouse is in Germany) so things were all put on hold.

Had a wee nosey through my previous orders on Amazon. Bought a pair of 22.5kg dumbbells back in December 2019 for about £83. They're now up to £232 😲

I've had a look at them before but I've never used them in a commercial gym so not sure what is/isn't a good make. A lot of the reviews I've seen leave some question marks over the quality. I usually can work up to 50kg+ for certain exercises and I'm not sure any of the adjustable dumbells go up to that weight.

I've priced up what I think I'd need and, as I say, everything looks reasonable enough except for the dumbells. I'm tempted to leave it another few months and see if things start to come down in price once the Covid situation (hopefully) starts to improve and there's less demand.

Ive got plates apparently on their way via DHL. We had something else delivered last week and the guy said he’d seen them listed but every day the notification gets pushed back a day.

I’ve also bought two 20kg plates, pledged to arrive on January 15th but I guess we’ll see.

120 kg of plates arrived today.

I'm constantly refreshing my DPD tracking app (even though it'll do no good) checking for updates. My stuff is now in the Netherlands awaiting customs clearance 😣

Ordered squat/press stands.
I got some for my rugby club so we could train outdoors in the summer, they're pretty useful.

I've borrowed kit again so I've got 150kgs worth of barbell weights, a rack, 32.5 and 50kg pair of dumbbells, a TRX with door anchor and resistance bands.

The only thing I don't have is a bench but I can use two pillows on the floor to increase the range of motion and do standing shoulder press with my dumbbells.

I can actually do a decent programme with the kit I have - decided to go into a 6 week hypertrophy block as I can just add more reps and super-sets for progression. The weather is too crap to do any pitch based conditioning, road running can get the sea as my lower back can't handle it.

I've done some bodyweight and band based programmes at my club, so if anyone is looking for a programme based on the lot they have I may be able to help.

Anyone else doing the GQ 17 day press up challenge?

Get an email everyday which I’d happily share in here if anyone wanted.

Spoilers...day one was brutal

Aye ok. Will give this a go I think.
Speaking of which, a boxing gym I attended briefly used to throw in a one minute push up into the warm up. It was murder. 30s down 30s up.

Another popular one that iv not tried out of fear is the "Bring Sally up" one.

I am having a crisis. The gym is closed and the owner has decided it’s closed until June because that’s when he thinks he’ll be allowed to reopen. The other stuff I like doing, hillwalking and swimming is off because I live to far from decent hills and lochs, I live in Glasgow city so walking is limited to around the parks and river - so it’s not really strenuous. I tried to buy some dumbbells/kettlebells online and either can’t get any or the ones available are too expensive (even gumtree etc are no go’s). The weight is going back on as well.

Sorry that’s just really a massive vent but I think lockdown is finally starting to really get to me.

Does anyone know of any decent online fitness that doesn’t require equipment?

Calimovment is a youtube channel run by a couple of physiotherapists specialising in calisthenics.

They have lots of tutorials and programs from beginner to very skilled.

https://www.youtube.com/user/Calisthenicmovement/videos?view=0&sort=p&flow=grid

There scientific knowledge is pretty top tier. There explanations tend to be about the best of any fitness youtubers. As physiotherapists (like AthleanX) they are really big on mobility which is generally over looked by most lifters on social media.

Still going with 5x5. Three weeks into it now, really enjoying it.

When looking up fitness advice I found this guy and with all the differing advice it’s a laugh to watch someone take the piss out of it all.

Almost tempted to try honey and creative but not sure if he’s taking the piss or being serious.
