Think we need to remember this is the league cup and none of these guys have kicked a ball in anger in 7 months. Dunfermline only scraped past Dumbarton via a pen in their first outing but that extra 90 mins makes a big difference and you saw that the longer the game went on. First half we were decent keena should've scored and the ref bottled a clear pen. Second half Dunfermline changed to one up top and took control of the middle of the park. We should really have done something to match that but didn't . However you may find this was for the long term benefits of getting our first choice 11 up to speed. So what did we learn from this 90 mins. Well we all knew we need a decent centrehalf with pace and this reinforced that. Mercer is a decent footballer but a bit slow although Thomas is a class act at championship level and Kevin O'Hara is still utter dung. Still a lot of work to do but it's being ready for the 17th that matters and not before as we learnt 3 seasons ago.. Yes fair point - Montrose onwards is where it really matters and although disappointing, especially 2nd half, the league cup games are more bout getting games under the belt.

Definitely. Win the last two and we'll more than likely get through anyway which would be a wee bonus.
Syd Puddefoot
Only played for 20 mins in first half where we looked decent. Crosses into our box we toiled with all night and they were worthy winners after 2nd half performance. Have to put it in perspective though. As a supporter who has went to games for years, watching on tv is simply horrendous. How anyone can call themselves a fan or supporter by watching on the box is beyond me. They are simply results followers. Football needs fans in stadiums.

However, it’s all we can do just now.

I’m hopeful that Keena and Dowds will score a lot of goals in the league - hopefully ably assisted by Connolly and Morrison .

In the grand scheme of things football without crowds does seem rather minor inconvenience.
ebobsboy
I thought we were ok in the first half bar the first ten/fifteen minutes without looking outstanding we were growing into the game. Second half they dominated when they dropped McManus into midfield, who btw never did much and O'Hara played as I thought he would, on the periphery. Mercer clearly can't handle pace but ok with the game in front of him, Morrison will be key for us and looked ok first half, anonymous second half when Dunfermline stopped the supply to him, liked the look of Dowds and Keena. As others have said the centre back area is cause for concern. Need better quality in there.
Newbornbairn
Got a wee chubby at the thought of Morrison on the right and Connolly on the left knocking in crosses for Keena and Dowds.

We conceded 18 goals last season and had one of the best defence records in the country with 3 out of that back 4, considering Buchanan dropped out when M and M came in. I think those stats are down to how well Robbie Mutch performed rather than our defence.

Ok but it will be our first choice formation with dowds and keena our first choice strikers. To combat the change I would've taken one of them off early and put on a midfielder but perhaps it was more important to give keena and dowds game time for the long term than change things after 45/50 mins. Unfortunately neither of our front two look to have the style of play to drop into the midfield like McManus did or we could just have done that to counter it. Instead all our subs were like for like position wise with it being 70 mins before keena came off. Let's also not forget that in fact their goals came from two set pieces where their captain wasn't picked up correctly and not fantastic wing play or a move carving out defence open.
bairn88
Haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere so worth noting - that “foul” on Mutch for their disallowed joke was a farce, would’ve been raging if it was given against us Mutch is great at league 1 level, very happy to have him, but does need to work on his coming out for crosses. Has been a problem for a while
