The Falkirk FC Thread

Was 3 of Falkirk's wins after the new year last season not against Brechin?  I mind Hartley went through a 2 or 3 week spell of actively trying to get games postponed.

Yes we did beat Brechin 3 times but we also picked up another 7 wins against other teams. Hartley must regret making so many changes now.

Yep, absolutely.

They still gave the same points.

Most teams had three or four wins against Brechin last season, do we start making up new league tables with teams having 9 or 12 less points?

You'd probably find the final league placings would still be the same if you take everyone's results against Brechin out of the equation.  With that in mind, Hartley didn't improve Falkirk at all last season.

..........and now we desperately need Ray McKinnon to do that very thing. His recruitment from here on in has to be bang on the money. It won’t be too difficult to find better replacements for Hartley’s Horrors. Thing is, “better” might still not be good enough.

The last four years, 9th place has amassed 27, 31, 30, and 37 points. To reach the upper figure of 37 points in the 28 remaining games, we’d need to win 8, draw 10 lose 10. Figures that seem complete pie in the sky for the current squad.

I'd like to see him going down a longer term route than Hartley who paid for last seasons signings this season with there being no continuity.  However,  given the fact that Mckinnon  is in a much worse position than Hartley was last season regarding the squad beggars cant really be choosers.

That we finished up 17 points ahead of Dumbarton makes it look like we were never in danger, but it was really only the last few games that the gulf became insurmountable for them. They kind of threw the towel in at that point, and we had a couple of wins against an already promoted St Mirren, with their players already on holiday.

Hartley did what was necessary, but he certainly didn’t transform performances (other than the DU game which was when they officially disintegrated).

We would've gone down if Houston had stayed in charge its as simple as that.  Hartley certainly improved us .

By the time he was able to make his improvements to our dreadful squad, we were five points behind 8th place.

By the end of the season, we were seventeen points ahead of 9th.

That's a considerable improvement.

You'll know better than me if he did performance-wise.  Points-wise is debatable.

May, Pressley, Holt, Houston, Hartley. All failed miserably in the recruitment stakes which has resulted in us getting worse and worse over the past ten years.  If we are to eventually reach the holy grail this is the area that we must turn around completely. Jobby McCall managed to get us from relegation material to cruising the league in one summer so it is entirely possible to see a vast improvement in the short term if the right players are brought in. However, we cant continue to have our successful signings very much in the minority though as has happened since Hughes's final season in post.

Hughes did also. The season after the Awfulview season we romped the league.

Under Houston we had 3 pts in 7 games. 0.43 pts a game including matches v Brechin and Dumbarton.  Hartley was 41 points in 28 games at 1.46 pts a game so I think we can safely say he did.

Hugely unfair to blame him, though. We didn't even know what league we were going to be playing in. That would have had a massive impact on potential budget and players willing to come to us. By the time that was sorted out all the decent recruitment had already taken place.

0.43 points per game under Houston. Hartley was 1.43 points per game over the whole of last season's tenure. If we're counting the games past January when he was actually able to do something about our awful squad it was 1.83 points per game.

These are facts, not opinions. You can't debate facts.

We were told on the 23rd of May that we weren't getting promoted. That gave him the whole summer to sign players for fecks sake. More than enough time to assemble a decent balanced squad of  players. Instead we had a squad with 9 central midfielders and one striker after christmas.  He also signed Jim Sharpe  and played him 30 times which is utterly criminal.  He made a total James Hunt of that season.

agree - hartley came in when we were 8th and ended last season we were 8th - kept us afloat ..just, thankfully for brechin and dumbarton in the league we survived. but he didnt improve us, the jak and nelson were the highliught of last season and if we got them returned in summer maybe, just maybe the summer signings wouldnt have been the clusterf4ck that we are. but they didnt and we are so happy to see him punted.

agree with houston comments - we did well under him for the time in charge, but again i agree he shouldve went after we failed promotion in the last playoffs. took us as far as he could.

Seriously, I'm all for folk having a dig where it's merited, but no idea why folk just make stuff up.

Hartley improved us considerably in January. You might not like it, but that's a fact. The statistics show it.

How is taking us from 8th to 8th an improvement by any stretch of the imagination? It's standing still at best.
