you know that was a good speech.

much better than Gray could ever do.

but I have two points. a) using Japan to come across all statesmany on network BBC? I see why he did it, but I'm a little uncomfortable with that. b) it needed another 8 minutes or so just to reach the 'ta da' moment at the end. towards the end I thought he was cramming it in a little tight.

edit: good to see the whole electorate interaction story -'Nancy' from Kilmarnock.

I wonder what anecdote Gray is thinking up. is this to be Scotland's Joe the Plumber moment?

So the Gray man is now in favour of a Council Tax Freeze. Well done mate. You have opposed it in SNP budgets, but even you realised you could not go into an election promising to put the tax up. Mind it is only for 2 years..Then what?

Wrote this bit in my own thread. But as i say watch out. Only 2 years. What are Grays plans? He has to be questioned on this. The announcement today is for short term electoral gain(fair enough). But Gray and his cronies must come out and outline there policy for the future of local taxation. We know they are against the SNP,s plans for a local income tax. So what do they want? A wee mix of council tax bands,a la McConnell? Certainly the whole question of tax will be a major electoral issue, but Labour cannot be allowed to hide behind a 2 year freeze and then we will have a look at it.

I was pleasantly surprised to find our council tax frozen here as well. I suppose a Tory council couldn't do much else mind.

They could reduce it. Tossers.

Or the government could scrap it altogether and come up with something that isn't based on the price of your house years ago.

They tried to, if I recall rightly ,your precious Tories blocked it :)

Not as I recall at all. Indeed in February I seem to remember Annabelle Goldie calling for pensioners to get a council tax cut of £200.

I can't find a single news article claiming that the SNP tried to cut council tax rates.

Indeed in October it was the SNP offering a 2 year freeze.

No they want to scrap it and introduce a tax that at least takes into account the ability to pay.

I know that the SNP want to scrap it and replace it with a Local Income tax. That's not what we were talking about capy. We were talking about the policy on the actual rates of the existing system.

They should scrap the waste of time that is the diddy parliament. That would do the hard pressed taxpayer a great service.

I gathered that....no point tinkering at the edges. Just scrap it.

The local income tax thing is worth exploring for a laugh. It's true that the council tax needs to be binned as it's shite and it's unfair, not that there is such a thing as a fair tax of course. It's all extortion by the political classes and if you refuse to pay for their shite they jail you.:P

Lets scrap the waste of time that is the scottish parliament. Get out of Europe, hand as much power to locals as possible and make governments as small an influence as possible. The less chance of fucking arseholes like Gray wielding some sort of power over us poor downtrodden scum the better.

Surely it is not beyond the wit of man to come up with a fair local tax system, or maybe given that it only accounts for 15/16% of a councils spend they should just fund it all centrally. I still feel though that councils should be accountable.

So do I. They should be raising the majority of the cash they want to waste locally. These wankers tend to live amongst their victims anyway so they would maybe see it as being in their best interests to spend the money wisely.

I think local councillors get a far too easy ride. It seems to attract utter cretins with very limited ability, and it's all run centrally by the parties anyway. There's very little decision making done at local level anymore. I'd like to see the role of westminster reduced as much as possible, I'd like to see us well out of the EU, and Holyrood should be scrapped.

We have way too many politicians and their assorted hangers on ruining our lives as it is. Get them to f**k.

Another day, another poll with different results...

http://breakingnews.heraldscotland.com/breaking-news/?mode=article&site=hs&id=N0451071299969857695A

Labour is ahead in the race to power in the Holyrood elections, according to a poll for the Scottish Mail on Sunday newspaper.

With less than two months to go until the Scottish Parliament elections, a total of 43% of voters with definite intentions to vote for a certain party said they were backing Iain Gray's party in the constituency ballot, ahead of 37% for the SNP.

The Tory vote was 11%, LibDem 5%, Scottish Socialist 2% and Greens 1%.

In the regional or list vote, Labour polled 44%, with the SNP on 37%, Conservatives 11%, Liberal Democrats 4%, Green Party 2% and the Scottish Socialists 1%.

According to Professor John Curtice, elections expert at Strathclyde University, the results mean Labour would end up with 63 seats - up by 17.

The SNP would have 49 seats, an increase of two.

So this one has the SNP up about 5% since 2007, and a gap (in constituencies) of only 6%.

It's halfway through March and there doesn't appear to be much doing in Scottish politics, even though it's an election year. I caught a snippet from a radio program talking about increasing the powers of the parliament to include responsibility for air weapons and drink driving limits. Wow, the big issues of the day, air weapons and drink driving limits, they keep me awake at nights.

The last time I can recall being impressed with the Parliament was when they introduced the smoking ban in 2006. What has the Parliament achieved since then? I honestly can't think of one major policy of note that the SNP have inplemented. If they are hanging their hat on the council tax freeze, then they are going to be struggling. I wanted a referendum on independence but the SNP didn't even get to the stage of forcing the other parties to vote down the bill. I like radical change that makes a difference; change for the better, like the smoking ban. They can get on with building the new Forth Crossing for a start.

Christ, the Lib-Dem vote has been completely obliterated. Clegg seems to be a bit embattled at the moment, and it's no wonder when you see figures like that.

63 seats would leave Labour only a few short of a coalition if they so pleased, probably with the Lib-Dems, funnily enough.
