People have been encouraged to get on their high horse but I guarantee a huge proportion of them will have been in a hotel in Dubai, Egypt or Thailand built under exactly the same conditions or been on a cruise with Asians and African workers getting paid buttons.

That's a bold guarantee.

Not even anywhere close to a majority of people I know have even been in a hotel in any of those places, let alone one that has been built under exactly the same conditions as the WC football stadia, or have been on a cruise. So the "huge proportion" is immediately swimming upstream against the data.

There must be a self-selecting mechanism at play: stayed in one of those hotels or been on a cruise? Then there's a probability of close to unity that you'll get on your high horse.

Unless of course that guarantee has no basis in reality.

Millions of British people go to Thailand, Egypt, Dubai and on cruises every year.

I guarantee you every single journalist and presenter bitching about Qatar falls into that category.

Alex Scott was that worried about gay rights in the Middle East that she took money to promote Dubai as a holiday destination. They are all full of shit.

Impressive speed the cyclist is travelling at.

Too many motorists have no regard for cyclists. I said this to a friend who insisted that as they don't pay road tax, they should always be subordinate to motorists and give way to them. Pretty dangerous mode of transport when you consider there are people with that attitude.

The British people protesting the human rights conditions of migrant workers in Qatar seem oblivious that we have conducted two disastrous blood soaked invasions in that region in the last 20 years.

There is undoubtedly more reason for the 2012 Olympics to be boycotted than this.

And also re. Migrant workers, there is surely no possibly their lives would be better if the world cup hadn't happened, they would be subject to similar or worse conditions elsewhere.

Their lot can, and absolutely should, be improved. This is the first time they have really been a news story at all so can only help.

You are correct, though the official number of deaths in relation to construction of these stadiums is 37. Even taking this, that's over 4 people dead per stadium

Just that stat alone is nuts.

Add in the other migrant deaths and the blood soaking of this tournament is beyond unreasonable. And that's before you talk about how they were repressed.

You know that isn't normal, right?

The latest data suggests 3.5 deaths per 100,000 workers each year in construction, even higher in the USA at 5.33.

It seems that the rate of deaths for construction in Qatar is above the average globally.  But, we need to factor in the quality of workers being used and the resultant likelihood of more accidents.

Regardless, is their any doubt that migrant workers were not treated as well as they should have been in Qatar?

Would that be the same British people who protested against these blood soaked invasions?

You can hate Qatars human rights record and British foreign policy at the same time and not be a hypocrite.

Protested so hard that Labour won big majorities in 2001 and 2005....

The way not to be a hypocrite is to treat a sporting event in Doha the way you would treat one in Dundee or Detroit.

As @VincentGuerin said in another thread, you could in theory exclude pretty much any country in the world from hosting a World Cup if you look hard enough for a reason. Britain's colonial past, US international aggression, Russia invading Ukraine, and on and on.

But this one is different for a number of reasons. Firstly, homosexuality is not just frowned upon but illegal. A gay person in Qatar can be arrested and imprisoned. Human rights are not just neglected but actively pursued by the authorities. Add to that, the country had no infrastructure in place to host the World Cup when they won the bid - they won purely because they paid off enough corrupt FIFA officials. For this, FIFA needs IMO a complete overhaul/abolished.

Then we get to migrant workers. forced to surrender passports to their employers and forced to pay agents to get there for work - very much mirroring the people trafficking we are seeing in small boats crossing the channel right now. Lack of rights, facilities, healthcare, safety and so on leading to a huge number of migrant deaths, and a significant number working on construction for these stadiums. Officially 5 people died per stadium, unofficially this could be far higher.

Ask your friend what his opinion on cars made before 1st January 1982 is.
