Reading what Prudhomme had to say about the route is encouraging. Looks like they have found some tough climbs that haven’t been used before. Think I might have been a bit harsh in my disappointment at seeing two time trials.

The route is made by whoever rides. Super hard Giro this year Contador romps it. Fairly easy Tour he'll do the same. Andy Schleck should go for the Giro, made for him.

Tut tut Floyd

NANTERRE, France -- A French court has convicted American cyclist Floyd Landis in absentia for his role in hacking into the computers of a French doping lab.

The court in the western Paris suburb of Nanterre has given Landis a 12-month suspended prison sentence -- six months fewer than the penalty sought by the state prosecutor.

The WADA-accredited lab in the town of Chatenay-Malabry south of Paris uncovered unusually high testosterone levels in Landis' samples from the 2006 Tour de France, and he was later stripped of his victory.

Prosecutors say Landis and coach Arnie Baker masterminded a plot to hack into the lab's computer system to obtain documents as they sought to defend the cyclist's name.

Bartali honoured for saving Jews during the Holocaust

UCI releases details of how Italian smuggled photos and documents in his bike

Tributes have been paid to cycling great Gino Bartali, with evidence now showing that he helped save the lives of up to 800 Jews during World War II. The Yad Vashem Memorial in Israel is looking into giving him the title "Righteous Among the Nations", a term used by Israel to describe non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination by the Nazis.

The details about the Italian's actions in the 1940s have only just recently come to light, through a university study. His son, Andrea, has continued the research along with the Jewish community and journalist Laura Guerra.

“In 1943 Bartali, who had already won the Tour de France once and the Giro d’Italia twice, was assigned to the traffic police by the fascist regime, before leaving the job on 8 September,” according to the UCI. “That was when he went underground, choosing to help persecuted Jews by smuggling identity photos to a convent that produced counterfeit papers.

“As far as the soldiers who guarded the road between Florence and San Quirico, near Assisi, were concerned, Bartali was merely on a 380-km training run. In fact, valuable documents were hidden inside the frame and saddle of his bicycle.”

Bartali remained modest about his actions, not even telling his wife. His own public comment was “Good is something you do, not something you talk about. Some medals are pinned to your soul, not to your jacket.”

He was imprisoned for 45 days in late 1943, officially because of his support for the Vatican, which opposed the fascist regime. However, he was never tried and was ultimately released.

did anyone see the reports about a one day race in london that will apparently "rival the classics"?

London plans to host a one-day professional road race to rival classic events such as the Paris-Roubaix.

To be first staged in August 2013, the race will be part of a two-day cycling festival, which will become an annual event, as part of the Olympic legacy.

London has to meet certain critera, but British Cycling's Jonny Clay said the race would "definitely" go ahead.

"I'd be surprised if in a few years it isn't one of the world's biggest cycling races," Clay told BBC Sport.

The Milan-San Remo is the first Classic of the season, with six more races taking place over March and April in Belgium, France and the Netherlands, culminating in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege on 24 April. As with the London marathon - where elite runners and amateurs run the same course on the same day - the London road race will involve professional and amateur cyclists who will tackle a 100-mile route, starting in the Olympic Park and based on the 2012 Games cycle road race.

Cycling has a crowded calendar with the one-day classics taking place before the sport's major races such as the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.

But British Cycling's cycle sport director Clay, who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games in the team cycling pursuit, insisted London's commercial pull will attract teams, riders and sponsors.

"Britain now leads the world in track cycling and I'm sure that will be reflected in the Olympics," said British cycling commentator Phil Liggett.

"And after Mark Cavendish's incredible road race world title win in Denmark and winning the Sports Personality of the Year award, he has the profile now, as does the sport. "The obvious next step is to bring a major road race to the heart of London. We were going to see the Olympic road race and then silence for the years ahead, but that is not going to be happen now.

"We will eventually bring the best riders, who are household names now, to London.

"This is no longer a cinderella, cloth-cap image sport. It's a very highly financed professional business and we've got the best riders in the world."

A spokesman for the UCI, the sport's governing body, said: "[The] UCI is committed for the cycling development worldwide, and we are obviously very satisfied of such a project, but we do not know it in detail."

sounds shite.

sounds shite.

There is something incredibly pompous about the utterings of these Sky/British cycling people. The quote about it rivalling the biggest races says it all really.

Why not go the whole hog.....start in July, for three weeks, call it the Sky tour de London.

By the way.....how out of place does Phil Ligget's quote look? Zero to do with the subject the article is about.

Kimmage blasts UCI legal action by McQuaid and Verbruggen

‘Hell will freeze over before I issue either of those gentlemen an apology’

Irish journalist and outspoken doping critic Paul Kimmage has described a claim in the Swiss courts against him as an attempt to enforce omerta, and insists that he won’t bow to pressure from the UCI.

The Sunday Independent reported today that fellow Irishman Pat McQuaid and Dutchman Hein Verbruggen, the current and former presidents of the UCI, are each seeking damages of 8,000 Swiss francs (about €6,600) from Kimmage.

The newspaper states that they have told the Swiss District Court that Kimmage has caused them ‘annoyance’ and that their ‘reputation has been seriously damaged’ by articles.

Kimmage has confirmed to VeloNation that he received documentation about the case ‘about ten days ago,’ and has given a strong response.

“My reaction to this can be summed up very simply. Unlike Mr Verbruggen and Mr McQuaid, I do not accept donations from Lance Armstrong, so I am not really in a position to defend this,” he said. “Hell will freeze over before I issue either of those gentlemen an apology for anything.”

Kimmage states that the case appears to relate to an interview he gave l’Equipe during the summer, plus the French translation of the interview transcript with Floyd Landis that the website NYVelocity.com carried in January of last year. “They also mention the Sunday Times, but I don’t see how this actually covers anything from the Times piece,” he said.

He has been critical about large donations given by Lance Armstrong to the UCI. Armstrong and his former US Postal Service team are currently amongst the subjects of a federal investigation currently being carried out in the United States.

Former US Postal Service rider Floyd Landis has said that the UCI was paid money by Armstrong to cover up a positive EPO test in 2001. The UCI denies this suggestion of a positive sample, and says that money donated was used for anti-doping.

McQuaid and Verbruggen’s action has been taken against Kimmage personally, rather than against l’Equipe and his former employer, the Sunday Times.

In the legal case, the two UCI officials are demanding that he doesn’t repeat the statements made before about the governing body, and also that he pays for advertisements in international media publicising the final judgement of the court.

According to the Sunday Independent, the statement of claim says that Kimmage was ‘dishonest’ in accusing them of ‘having knowingly tolerated tests, of being dishonest people, of not having a sense of responsibility, of not applying the same rules to everyone.’

Since the publication of his book A Rough Ride in 1990, Kimmage has built a reputation of speaking out against doping and corruption in cycling. He has won multiple awards as a journalist, and has had several clashes with the UCI.

He believes a deliberate decision has been made to name him alone in the claim. “Clearly they don’t want this addressed properly in court, because if they did, they would have addressed their letter to L’Equipe,” he told VeloNation. “L’Equipe would have sent along their finest barristers and presented a defence of this. They would also have brought all of the witnesses that you would need to defend it.

“Clearly they [McQuaid and Verbruggen] don’t want that to happen, which is why they have targeted me rather than the newspapers. That would be my reading of it.”

Asked what action he would take, he said he didn’t intend entertaining the claim. “I am reluctant to even put a stamp on an envelope and send it back, as that is going to cost me money…the cost of a stamp is actually too much money to waste on those people,” he said. “But I suppose it will come to that at least. It is at least going to cost me a stamp.

“We talk about omerta all the time in the sport. This is how they enforce it. Is this what they would say is part of the fight against doping? I don’t think so. This is all about the omerta, and enforcing the omerta.”

Despite the CAS case still looming in the background Contador has taken two stages of the Tour De San Luis in South America. Leipheimer and Boonen also showing some early season form.

enjoy it while you can bertie.

the judgement is due on the 6th of february and if it's anything less than a two year ban the game is up.

It's the people that buy the wee shitty yellow wrist bands, the clobber and donate to his livestrong foundation that I fell sorry for.

All that money going on legal fees and bungs to the UCI to cover up positive tests.

Well I don't feel sorry for them. Hell mend them.
