There was:

I know there's no race radio in the olympics but surely to f**k a team car or something could have given them a shout.

According to Smith Twitter's feed, There was a. motorcycle infront of the peloton. The black board was updated every 3-4 minutes.

It appears that the Spanish car told their riders but the Dutch car didn't.

More Dutch comedy gold on Cycling News - https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/mathieu-van-der-poel-blames-removal-of-plank-for-tokyo-olympics-mountain-bike-crash/

"Both Dutch national coach Gerben de Knegt and Van der Poel’s teammate Milan Vader, who placed 10th, could not explain how the pre-race favourite had not realised the plank would be removed.

“It may be hard to say, but we talked about that during lunch today,” Vader told NOS.

“Mathieu said: ‘Gosh everyone jumps there.’ I asked: ‘Won't you, then?’ He said, ‘No, I'll roll off that plank,’ Then I said that they had removed that board at the test event in 2019 for the competition.”

"Van der Poel confirmed on Twitter that he was under the impression the plank would be in place during the race.

“I was not aware of it – that plank was there during the reconnaissance. I only heard that it had been removed at the test event,” wrote Van der Poel."

What a thick plank! 😂

Tbf, that's a disgrace. Did the officials not recognise her and Van Vleuten? They are amongst the favourites the ITT.

Some of the officiating has been appalling and that is another example. Apologies are not enough - the idiotic officials should be sent home.

Similar carry on with the Dutch BMX. During a warm up an official decides to cross the track and wipes out a cyclist. I can only assume its volunteers who get the gig at these things so they've no idea what's happening.

Tom Dumoulin is doing his best to restore the Dutch faith in cycling with his TT performance this morning.

Final times between 3 or 4 could be pretty close come the end going by the first lap splits.

Perhaps not then - Roglic has flown round on the second lap. Mightily impressive effort for the best part of an hour.

Good to see big Tam Dumoullin back and in good form. Such a shame what happened to him after the Giro victory and Tour podium.

It's amazing how Dumoulin can come from nowhere  (his "mental health break") to get silver in such a strong field. Highly suspicious!

Roglic won by a minute from Dumoulin, Dennis, Kung and Ganna who were within a few seconds of each other. Makes you think....

But Pogacar would have put at least 30 secs into Roglic on that course. Where was he?

ETA - Team Jumbo Visma were 1st, 2nd and 6th, Ineos 3rd and 4th.

Aye Dumoulin pulled form out his arse.
When you think the 2 Ineos riders (& Kung) are ITT specialists, & shipped 1min 5 to Roglic.

There’s huge changes at Bora for next season, their squads next year will be almost unrecognisable from this year. Almost every transfer confirmed has involved them.

I saw Hindley has been dropped from the DSM Vuelta team in the same week he was confirmed as going to Bora. Although they’ve cited his injuries sustained at the Giro as the reasoning.

See Ineos are going for the multiple possible contenders system that did so well at the Tour, with Yates, Carapaz and Bernal all in the squad for the Vuelta alongside Mountain Bike gold medalist Tom Pidcock. Carapaz coming off a podium at the Tour and Gold in the Olympic Road Race puts a bit of a spanner in Yates' plans I'd imagine.

Groenewegan takes it on an uphill finish. Cavendish 2nd Nizzolo 3rd.

Cav struggles on uphill finishes. Without Morkov to lead him out, he had little chance. Cav was two bike lengths behind Groenewegen when they turned into the straight. It would have been impossible, even with Morkov,  to close that gap on on that drag.

My tip,  Mads Pedersen won yesterday. That tough uphill finish, like. the one in Harrogate when he won the World Championship, suited him perfectly. I can't understand why Evenepoel rode so hard at the front (with Cav struggling to keep up) over the last two laps. WTF was DQS's DS Brian Holm thinking?

That ineos grenadier squad is arguably the greatest array of climbers ever seen at a GT. In addition to those you've mentioned they also have sivakov and Narvaez. Still think Roglic is the man to beat at the Vuelta. There's plenty of punchy finishes where he's likely to take time bonuses over his rivals and the final time trial is definitely to his advantage.
