He had to jump in the river to douse the flames.
He's wringing in the Seine.
You have spent the majority of your life hoping this would happen so you could use that joke, you have, haven't you?

Didn't realise it was quite this superlative but apparently Notre Dame is the most-visited building in the world and the most popular tourist attraction in Europe - well ahead of the likes of the Eifel Tower, Coliseum and Tower of London. Not to mention its core use as a cathedral plus its place as a symbol of Parisian and French identity. Profoundly shocking to see such an icon burn.

it was maybe lucky to survive the Second World War- "General von Choltitz was an unrepentant Nazi, and had been ordered by Hitler to leave the city a "heap of burning ruins", but he also realized the battle was lost, and he did not want to be captured by the Resistance. Through the offices of the Swedish Consul-General, Raoul Nordling, he ignored Hitler's orders and arranged a truce.  Choltitz later asserted that his defiance of Hitler's direct order stemmed from its obvious military futility, his affection for the French capital's history and culture, and his belief that Hitler had by then become insane."
