I am going private with healthcare and I feel like I’m cheating on thee NHS though - it was the NHS doctor that told me I would be better going private as it’d take months on the NHS (my consultation with the private specialist has been arranged today and I’m being seen in 2 weeks). Am I being stupid for feeling guilty? It’s also costing me a minimum of £200, most likely more.

It's just queue jumping, you'll get the same treatment as anyone else. I wouldn't feel too guilty about it. Most people could afford £200 if they chose.

P.S. The "private specialist" is more than likely moonlighting from his NHS job.

I hate private medicine; absolutely hate it.  I don’t need to go into the reasons as they’re probably the same reasons that are making you feel guilty.

I’d like to think I’d never go down that route but can’t swear to it.  Probably be even more difficult I feel it was my wife, kids or grandkids who needed treatment.

The fact that you’re feeling guilty shows you have character.

When I was young and principled, I turned down the BUPA coverage at work. It was a move that my now middle-aged-and-anything-for-an-easy-life self looks back on and nods approvingly.

I have my own business.  The owner may be a c**t but he wouldn’t introduce private health care.

Don't expect superior management in the private sector. Quicker appointment, of course. And if anything goes wrong, they'll possibly need the NHS to sort it out. As welshbairn said, it will be doctor who usually works in the NHS whom you'll be seeing - definitely - as there are virtually no doctors in Scotland working solely in private medicine.

In a hotel in Washington DC and in the minibar, between the Snickers bar and the beef jerky is this.

By lifting it out of the minibar to take this photo, you've already been charged for it.

Try explaining that to Finance when you try to claim your expenses.

I would rather use the NHS, I think it’s brilliant we have it. I just know it’ll be quicker to go private and I’d like to find out the diagnosis sooner than later. I suspect I’ll probably return to the NHS service for my rehab dependent on the outcome and how quickly they would be able to see me.
I’d be very content to receive NHS treatment without worrying about the standard. I don’t expect the standard of private care to be any better really, just available sooner. Still feels like I’m going behind the NHS’ back though [emoji17]

By going private, you are reducing the NHS queue for your ailment, thus helping it get closer to reaching its targets.

You'll probably be treated by NHS doctors and NHS nurses in an NHS hospital. You'll just be bunging a few quid in their back pockets to jump the queue.

I don't think it's new information to anyone. You bang on about it often enough. I think there's a chance he was asking your blowhard opinion in the hypothetical sense.

It least you’re not bothered.  That’s good.

Its not. Its also not relevant to what I asked though. I have private healthcare which is essentially part of my salary. I have never used it and hope never to have to. There are thousands like me. My question was, does that carry the same moral implications?

I think my personal position was made clear in my first post.  Each to their own.

If I worked for an employer offering private health care and it was discretionary I would opt out.

I used to work for a private healthcare company, I really should have saved up all my illnesses for then, we had great cover.  Sadly I was a fighting fit 20-something in those days.

I think I get healthcare as part of my work package, I've never had to use it.  I would certainly use it and not feel guilty in the slightest about it.

Me, granny d, and hopefully a few others are judging you right now, and your character is found wanting.

Other than that, carry on.
