Camera Showoff - Assignment added!

What length of exposure were you using for that? Been meaning to do a shot like that for donkeys, but never got round to it.

It was a 20 sec exposure. But it was a cauld Saturday night and there wasn't much traffic on the road.

That picture would look great on one of those canvas prints that that gets offered on Groupon.

I have always wanted a decent camera but unfortunately I have the attention span of a goldfish nowadays and it would just end up as a very expensive paperweight.

Anyone able to give advice on how to get started in this?

Would people recommend a night course?

What camera would people recommend for a beginner? What about computer software?

One thing putting me off is my belief that a DSLR is going to be too big and I won't have it on me for spontaneous stuff. Is this a valid concern? Can you take bangin photos with a smaller camera.

I really appreciate a good photo and I've been looking for a creative outlet. Landscapes likely to be my thing.

I'd go down the dslr route, much more flexible. You're correct that it's not as portable, horses for courses. A good entry level DSLR with two lenses Is just shy of £400.

I'd agree with that.

I got a Nikon D3200 off the wife at Christmas there with an 18-55mm lens. But I've picked up a few extras off eBay like a tripod and wireless shutter release. I even picked up a 55-200mm lens off gumtree. It was a fella who was upgrading his gear and I got it for a reasonable £80. (New they are about £250). If you are interested in landscapes, a tripod and remote shutter release are essential, especially if you want to do some long exposure stuff.

As for software, I use Lightroom 5. Got a free trial and liked it so I bought it. I haven't thought about courses, I've just went out to play with my camera and had some interesting results.

My advice. For software use Adobe CS. It ain't cheap(More expensive than the camera!!!!) but there isn't much you can't do with it. You can get a hold of a copy if you know what I mean, but the new CS6 version comes from the cloud so how practical that is these days I don't know. I use CS5 and it is more than adequate for me. You should be able to get a free 30 day trial from adobe.

There is an open source program called GIMP (yeah I know  ) similar and uses layers, I tried using it but it doesn't process RAW files as far as I know so it's bit of a pain in the arse to convert to JPEG files all of the time. There are plenty of tutorials around on the net for it as well. Again it may be worth downloading it until you get a feel for what you are wanting to do and researching what software you ultimately end up using. What I will say is that make sure your computer is quick, as when mine slows down it can take an age to process some of the commands. But I have an old computer. I bought a laptop and now only use the desktop for photoshop.

If you can get a hold of a copy of The Digital Photography Handbook

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Photography-Handbook-Step-step/dp/1905204140

It's worth a read and at seven quid it's an inexpensive way of giving you an insight of what you are letting yourself in for.

I never did a course, and I've been doing it for almost four years. I intend doing one this year though but I'm more looking to do it for studio photography as I've taken an interest in that.. I've kinda went down the route of learning from my mistakes. What I did end up buying was an in depth book about your specific camera. The manuals are pretty bloody worthless imo. A guy called David Busch does them for most cameras. That was the single most important accessory I bought. There are hundreds of settings and the book tells you what to do for each and every one of them. Also gives you some camera specific photography tips.

It's mostly landscapes I do and I did buy a tripod , but I seldom use it. Really only indoors. That said I wouldn't be without it. Perhaps if I used it more I would get better results, but I don't do too many long exposures.

For landscapes lens wise you will be looking at using a relatively wide angle lens. Something like 18-70mm. I use two cameras, one I keep my 18-55mm lens on and the other I have a 28-75mm f2.8. I do most of my shooting with this one. I seldom use my 70-300mm lens.

Most DSLR's will give you a decent pic. The lens is the important accessory. You have to really do your research on them as they can turn out to be a very expensive mistake if you purchase the wrong one. I wouldn't want to recommend a camera or a lens but I am exceptionally happy with mine. I mostly use a Sony a65 and a tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens. What I will say is if you are like me a year down the line, and you have caught the bug you will want to upgrade.

You can normally find decent deals on starter kits with a couple of lenses. Jessops, Cameraworld and Park Cameras are three specialist retailers I know of, there is also a firm called Panamoz. Hong Kong based importer. Never used them but the savings can be massive. Always seem to get good reviews, but obviously caution advised. I think they use pay pal so that should offer some protection.

As for spontaneous, this may be stating the obvious but if you have your camera with you then you can be spontaneous. However it can be a bind carrying it everywhere. I tend to plan on going out to photograph. You will however be without your camera and be walking down the street or wherever, at some point wishing you had brought it. A lot of photography is luck, being in the right place at the right time.

The final thing I would recommend is a camera rucksack. Easier to carry stuff about. There's a wide range of them on the market.

What it isn't is a cheap thing to do. But it is definitely worth the effort. I've seen plenty of the world that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Shameless bump.

Not been out taking photos lately as I can't be arsed. But last night, I headed out for a few shots of the International Space Station as it flew overhead. Rather chuffed with my efforts.
