Who's Going To Uni?

Interesting to see how this falls at most unis in the next few years. Once any organisation has realised it can charge the same price for something that costs them less, they rarely give up the opportunity.

I accept that there are start-up costs with online platforms etc, but keeping fees the same for less contact is hard to justify.

Even though lectures are billed as 'non-interactive', I think few people who have attended uni will have experienced lectures in that way. There are often points questioned or reviewed, hands raised, mini discussions etc. Even the ability to react to something with the person next to you is lost.

It's the same money for less.

This is capitalism.

Yeah, I'm wary of the road universities will go down. Assuming there will be less foreign students again next year, universities will remain under pressure to bring more money in and having mostly online courses allows them to enrol more students, making them more money but also just making the postgraduate employment bottleneck worse.

Glad I've already gotten everything I need from uni!

Most lectures are largely non-interactive experiences, and the interaction that does happen is often restrictive. You could quite easily have a situation in which 50 students need clarification on a point, but good luck getting any of those straight out of a West of Scotland state school raising their hand to ask. There should be a significant role for online and asynchronous learning in further/higher education in the 21st century and the on-campus lecture is the most suitable activity to undertake that transition.

I completely agree though that the instinct of the piss-poor 'businesses' operating further and higher education in the UK will be to try and charge the same for less. That will be true whether they simply maintain the same course structure as before, or (which would be more appropriate) expand the time devoted to small group tutorials/practicals in the timetable. They will try to use TAs at the expense of lecturers in that scenario, if they think they can get away with it.

There is in the US , I think, some kind of system whereby older people can go to university for free, without the fees, do the courses, do the course work,

all the learning .....

... the other side of the arrangement being that at the end of it, they do not receive a degree award.

I've wondered if there is some kind of similar thing in this country ?

(  Just remembered ,  I'm not in Scotland any more, but any replies on this would be appreciated )

The university management and staff are (with a few exceptions) very keen to get back to face to face teaching. Online teaching is a horrible experience for a lecturer, often like being a radio DJ talking into the ether. Students are online but cameras and mics off, nobody asking questions...

This coming year will be a proper blended learning one. In my case, students will watch the "lecture" videos at home. These are delivering the bare bones course content. Then groups of up to 50 will come on campus for a tutorial where they can interact with me and their fellow students. This is where the real learning will happen. Last year we did both online.

The exceptions will be the massive classes. These will just be online.

Our applications from overseas students are at their highest ever levels (for my programme anyway). I will have a class of ~350 students in September that can only be online. My other classes will be blended.

Unexpectedly, I may be going back to university next week. As in, I was still in paid employment a month ago and it hadn't even occurred to me that it might be possible.

Absolutely terrified, as I have a family to support and I'm going to be potless for the next four years, but I'll be doing something that I've wanted to do since I was a kid and I'm very excited. Hold me, P&B.

Edit: also just occurred to me that I may well be the oldest c**t in the programme, so I'll have all the youngsters wondering whose dad is waiting about to drive them home

Tremendous news Dave. Good luck.

Remind me which university is running a BSc in Pornography again?

As if you haven't read the prospectus.

Multiple times.

I'm doing a certificate in arts and humanities through the open university with a view to going to Aberdeen uni next year.

Will keep me busy in my retirement. Not for any career in mind.

I did some study with the OU a while back. Their materials, tuition, and support was really good. Would recommend to anyone; I was considering going that route again, but the programme I signed up for was much more specific to my interests than what the OU had available.

Best of luck mate.

I start mine in October, I am quite excited about it and also a tad nervous, studying for the first time and a complete change in direction.

I asked my wife if she thought it was a bit late for me to be learning something new, she said 'You can either be 46 with a degree or 46 without one.' So I went for it.

Best of luck @BFTD- the oldest student I ever had started at the age of 66. Not sure if you are in that range.

In my forties now, so I should get a good twenty-odd years' use out of the knowledge, I'd hope. Nothing to say your pensioner laddie wouldn't too, of course.

I'd just assumed that I'd need to wait until retirement before trying to get into this field, but hopefully, hopefully not. Had an unconditional offer based on my previous qualifications and experience, so I'm just waiting to hear if I'm actually going to be eligible for student loans. Nails bitten to the quick.

Firm believer that it should never be too late in a civilised society, especially considering how many people have to retrain in the modern world.

My mum's heading for eighty, and is always wistfully talking about things she wished she'd studied. I keep telling her to just do it; what's the worst that could happen. Haven't quite worn her down yet, as she's determined she wouldn't be accepted, but I'm getting there. Might start leaving an OU prospectus lying about.
