This is just my opinion, signing Paterson makes sense and I’ve looked where’s played he can play at both full back positions so do we sign him as that versatility type signing i think we could, make him first Choice LB and bring in this Millen if he is signing and if he gets injured shift him to RB.

obviously Murray knows him better than all of us and he think he can come in and does what Murray wants then so be it

Where are you seeing the information that Brody Paterson can play both full back positions?

From what I can see he has 30 senior appearances. 28 at left back, one on the left hand side of midfield and one at centre half. That doesn’t mean he can’t play on the right, I’m just not sure what you’re basing it on?

As for Ross Millen’s Scunthorpe contract, I’d imagine they’d be keen to get players off the wage bill considering they’ve just been relegated from the Football League, like every team in that position.

If he’s training with us, then at the very least, Ian Murray wants a closer look at him with a view to signing him. Hopefully the closer look makes him check other options.

Seen this on the Transfermarket website, that he can play both FB positions I don’t know how accurate that page is mind you

Was Millen not playing with QP in league 2 and then got a cushy contract with Kilmarnock basically because Andy Millen is his dad? I'm sure I read that at the time.

Aye that’s true, and now is dads either a coach or assistant at Morton I think

Didn’t realise we couldn’t a RB, CB and a LB. No need to sign a no.9 as well as Tx probably thinks Dick can do a job there…

Nope.

Dick could well be used as cover in the same way musonda was last year all be it a downgraded version.

Thing is we don't know how Murray wants to play and he might not either until he's had a few friendlies bearing in mind he has inherited most of these players and he will have to work with what he's got to an extent.

That’s my point. Dick is a perfectly acceptable defender, in my opinion. If we sign a LB to replace Dick, Dick can be our utility reserve back and a spare CB.

The even better point is with Dick at LCB, Brown at CB/Sweeper till Lang returns, and Berra at RCB, we could use a 3-2-3-2 formation to utilize our  heavy midfield roster. Consider, for example:

MacDonald

Berra/Brown(Lang)/Dick

Stanton/Spencer

Connolly/Easton/Ross

Vaughan/Gullan

“The even better point…” equals that team and set-up? Play with one centre half and no full-backs or wing-backs? Just step away from the keyboard.

Genuinely shocked Ross Millen has made a career out of football. I recall him being totally unwilling to get past the halfway line so a big change to what you're used to with tumilty. Steady enough defensively. His best trait was his set piece ability, he scored a screamer of a free kick against you lot in the league cup around 2012/2013 time I think.

Obviously been a while since he was with us so you'd expect that he's improved since then.

3-2-3-2 is designed to control the ball more and develop attacking potential, rather than a slashing attack with charging wingbacks. With Dick’s capacity as a wingback in doubt and Tumilty likely gone, it’s not beyond reason that Murray might have plans to go another direction.I’m simply pointing out that if there is a dearth of available wingbacks, there are other options to use some of our current talent. I know the idea of dual forwards will thrill many a veteran of last years turgid offensive (double entendre intended) showings.

Did he back off more or less than Euan Murray? Never seen anyone backpedal more than when he was faced with Bobby Linn in 18-19.

Rarely seen a defender as unable to deal with a winger as Murray with Linn that season. One game at Starks where Linn scored in a 1-1 draw stands out as particularly bad. Linn just got the ball and rinsed him time and again, including one instance where he backed off him for about 40 yards. Embarrassing to watch.

More.

His one attribute is that he is decent crossing the ball from deep and he has an OK free kick on him, I've read that some Raith fans aren't particularly enamoured with Dick due to his ineffectiveness running/driving with the ball, they'll really not like Millen.

If you take these things as any use (which I understand many won't and will laugh at it), then...

Dick.thumb.png.fc09961de7b88058bf0ec4c3b61c4ff7.png

You'd be trading in a defensively sound FB who doesnt contribute to creating chances, for a FB whos weaker defensively but will add a lot more in terms of setting up others.

I don't know if Dick is a goal threat from open play or set plays to talk about that difference tbh, and I've no watched either to say how fair these are.

That looks about right for Paterson. He was very good for us in games where we dominated (basically everyone other than Cove and the play-off games) when he could drive forward with Callum Smith cutting inside from the wing. Up until the play-offs I thought he was a certainty to be in the Championship next season, most likely with Airdrie, but he struggled in the big games and didn’t look great defensively. We played very open, attacking football which did leave him exposed occasionally though and Murray seemed keen on him. He likes to run with the ball and was good at linking with Easton and Smith down our left wing. He’s definitely got a lot of potential and sounds like a real change from Liam Dick.

If the last few years have shown anything, it's that if you have two CB slots, play two CBs in there. If it's three CB slots, play three CBs.

It's a specialist position. Anything else is courting an absolute shoeing.

There is the odd exceptional case but in general, when a coach says "he can play anywhere across a back 4" that the coach really means: "in an emergency he might be ok playing CB for 20 minutes without fucking it up, but we'll be backs to wall and f**k knows we hope it doesn't happen"

Why is the Alloa friendly behind closed doors?

It seems to be increasingly common. I don't know if they're being utilised more often or if teams are just publicising them more (for whatever reason?) but it does seem odd. Morton have just announced four pre-season friendlies, three of which are behind closed doors.

Is it maybe a case of being able to use "looser" rules than an official friendly? Unlimited trialists or rolling subs or whatever? I've no idea what the rules are but it does seem odd to be turning paying punters away.
