It was a good few years ago when large sums of money were placed on Ayr to beat us which they duly did, if memory serves me right fingers were pointed at a certain scrap merchant

Calderon's last game.

A large bet was placed on Raith to lose from an account belonging to a man that later ran Ballingry Juniors into the ground. He claimed his son had placed it.

There was obviously no way anyone could have foreseen that a weakened team would be fielded.

That game at Ayr was one you wouldn't have touched with a barge pole on your coupon.

The relegation issue had been resolved the previous weekend and it was a dead rubber. A punter would have had no idea what strength of team either side would put out.

As said above, £250,000 was staked on Ayr to win and at that time, the entire betting pot for an Old Firm match (outcome, correct score, halftime-fulltime, first scorer) was around £1m.

From what I recall we lost 0-1 and the centre half who miskicked and sold the goal was later signed by, and captained, East Fife. I'm trying to remember who was bank rolling East Fife at that time.

Thanks chaps. I have absolutely no recollection of this at all, even though it sounds like it would have been quite prevailant in the local media at the time.

There was remarkably little said about it at the time.

The Sunday Mail had a reporter who exposed quite a bit of wrongdoing among some of the directors and associates at the time, but the local press never went near any of it, as far as I can recall.

The late 90s and early 00s in Scottish football come across as being utter bedlam on hindsight. Perfect combination of easy travel to bring in players with minimal information on the Internet. It was always entertaining to rock up to Starks on Saturdays to find out we had a new arrival nobody had a clue about. Most clubs were probably the same. Combine that with absolutely hee haw due diligence on owners and it was chaos.

I was trying to find the story about the betting on that Ayr game, but couldn't.

Did however find a few stories full of various shenanigans. There may be a recurring theme, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

The last one touches on the betting scandal and continues a very interesting note about a former East Fife chairman.

I must admit I had forgotten all about that betting stuff completely.

I remember being at that match. There was a bit of a stooshie about it in the immediate aftermath of the story breaking but it seemed to die away fairly quickly. Much quicker than it would these days.

I suppose the fact it was the last match of the season probably helped to sweep it under the carpet.

We will know this current board have some significant failings, but they'll have to go some to beat the characters that hung around the club in the early 2000s.

And thats only the half of it that we know about, and going with one Glesca mafia was bad enough but we managed to do it twice

Which I think might happen sooner rather than later. I don’t think Murray will want that kind of negativity seeping into the team.

If your taking about Sim then let's hope there is a massive lottery winner.

Talking about getting DG completely out of the club

Wonder if Agnew will also be signed as a player?

Probably makes sense to register him, probably only makes sense to use him as a back up in case of a crisis.

Falkirk's first two signings are centre halves. On top of Watson and Brad McKay being signed with them already, I can't see Benedictus signing for them.

Yeah good point.

Considering Lang's injury and Berra's injury niggles in the last few months of the season I would be happy to see him sign on for another year.

Although I would have preferred Musonda but I doubt he'll stay with us.

I was all for getting rid of him after the Morton game, but he was good in the last few games. Overall, I'll not be too upset whether he's staying or going.
