The New Raith Rovers Thread

Not sure we’ll sign a big striker or two versus seek a couple on loan. We need a right winger more than a left, but I’d still take Ross.

Striker, especially Big Striker or No.9 is one of the easiest positions to fill, and the most difficult to fill well. There are acres of candidates and damn few successful players, so it’s a game of panning for gold or offering to play alchemist for a bigger team. Don’t suppose Fulham would like to loan us Bowie, would they?

As for 4 or 3/5 in back, let’s look at something…the team (excludes JMac)

3 Keepers signed

5 CB and 2 FB signed

5 Mids signed (although Coulson is generally seen as a LW)

3 CF, 1 LW, 1 RW

So the defenders total 35% of our signings, the CB’s alone are 25%. To me that says 4-3-3 or 3-5-2, and the latter would (in my opinion) better support JMcG preferred build from the rear strategy.

Regans out of contract but under 24 so i think a fee would be due.

Not contesting that a move to St Mirren would be a step up and would likely earn him a bit more money, but I'd be pretty disappointed if that's where he went.

Stepping stone IMO.

His move has to be about game time at the next level

I think hendry will think carefully about his move and it won't be determined by wages alone otherwise would never have come to the rovers.

Can zanatta or connolly play as a striker?

Think we need a central midfielder and 1 forward of some description then mcglynn can do his usual dip into the loan market.

Wonder if he'll be signing from the English lower leagues again?

Frankie was a success.

Duku panned out as we were warned.

Ugwu I felt was useful and would have kept.

So it was worth while last season taking a chance.

What actually happened with Duku? Started the season pretty well then fell away over Christmas was it?

Caught Covid around Jan and didn't ever look like the same player since.

With another pre season would be not still be worth a shot in this league?

I quite liked the look of him tbh.

He's fast and sure can hit a decent shot but I didn't really think much of his game off the ball, pre or post Covid. Always going towards the ball rather than making a run that creates space for others, hold up play wasn't the best either - Ugwu looked way better in that regard.

Didn't suit playing as a number 9 in front of a 3. Suspect he'd do well as a second striker in a 4-4-2 where someone else is getting him the ball in and around the box.

When he first came we were raving about him, fast and direct, scoring nearly every game. Tranmere fans said that's how he starts every time he signs for a new team, only to flop later.

PS - I should have added, they were spot on.
