Hey guys sorry to change the subject. But how do I change my name on here. I haven’t lived in Leeds for 4 years. I’ve been a bit bored lately and re reading some of our posts from the past and it’s been interesting. I was originally ARoverInLeeds. And seen a few name changes a long the way as in Andy C is now Broken Algorithms, Dunc is Raith Against The Machine and Hank Scorpio has changed his name a few times. As I go through my posts I seem to have been decent to an arsehole. Sorry about that.

No, he isn't. He's Ebanda's Handyman Services nowadays.

Sounds complicated best just save the hassle and move back to Leeds.

Notice Villareal have managed to get a 'bespoke' top as well, looks familiar. Had a wee squint on Joma's website and if we could have got their half and half but in navy blue it would have been mint.

hauf'n half  would have been great and got my vote but I suspect it may have clashed with the change  strip.

Feel your pain, I haven't been able to stomach Jack D in about 15 years. A double at 10 to 3 used to be a prematch ritual when there wasn't time left for another pint but now I should be called stay at home shandy or something like that...

I was going to call myself busdrivertastic. But I’ll never get to join the platinum group. Unless I create a new one.

You just pay to join.

In my opinion, for what it's worth, that Joma half and half top is a poor relation of our Puma one, in terms of the collar and detailing etc.

I never witnessed it live but from the videos there were a few good results in amongst the misery, a draw against Rangers and a win at Tannadice coming up tomorrow.

Too few.

I remember it as the season a lot of kids my age quietly put their Raith tops away and suddenly had always been old firm fans...

Yeah definitely. The following season in the First Division, even with Jimmy Nicholl returning, the crowds were never the same.

It’s crazy watching the old clips with the enclosure full. Even seeing the crowds that away teams brought back then is mad.

Initially when Nicholl came back I can remember some big crowds.

Just checked and here are some of the crowds from  that season:

Forfar at home in the league cup - 2,945

Airdrie at home - 3,413

Hearts at home (league cup) - 7,146

St Mirren at home - 3,311 and 3,432

Partick at home - 3,417 and 3,675

Falkirk at home - 3,564 and 4,666

Stirling at home - 3,280

Ayr at home - 3,015

Even towards the end of the season when our promotion hopes had gone we were still getting gates of over 2,000.

It was the 98/99 season where crowds began to dip below 2,000 fairly regularly. That's about 1,000 home fans lost in space of 12 months once they realised we were back to just being a bog standard division 1 club again.

Imagine getting almost 3k for a home game vs Forfar now

We started going most weeks again from the 01/02 season onwards - and crowds were pretty much in line with what they are now (from memory).

Shows how much damage was done in just a few years.  Going from comfortable Premier League mid table, to relegation, to failed promotion attempt(s), to relegation battle and then an actual relegation - all from 96-2002 - and all with a brand new ground (more or less) and a period of blowing large amount of cash to chase promotion again.

We never ever recovered from that.

I think part of the reason for the drop off was Alan Kelly hiked the admission price to £12 (it was a 8 quid to watch the Premier League / UEFA season three years earlier) and hiked the season ticket price to a level where you pretty much had to attend every home game to break even.

He then compounded this by writing condescending letters to season ticket holders saying that if they didn't renew, they didn't really have the right to call themselves true Rovers supporters.

This was the first time in my adult life I didn't buy a season ticket.

Wow... funny how memories change over the years.

After that 1996/97 season I decided enough was enough and fucked off to Aberdeen to go to university as a mature student. Watching the Janny and Iain Munro relegate and destroy your beloved Rovers will do that to you.

My memories of that season are being hugely optimistic at the start as we’d spent close on £1m on what on paper looked decent signings, then shock and disbelief at the initial string of absolute tonkings, while the Janny was interviewed on TV in a Hawaiian shirt and slippers. Then the McLean cameo, then Munro, then getting the Scandinavians in in desperation, then the Scottish Cup run and humping by Falkirk in the QFs, then losing interest and stopping going, then seeing we lost 6-0 at home to Rangers. The end.

I recall going to the opening day 1-1 draw with Stirling Albion at Forthbank on the opening day of the 1997-98 season and jumping on a bin and getting into the terracing. But it was the home terracing and it wasn’t open. Got escorted round to the away terracing and didn’t have to pay a bean. Away stand was full. Some travelling support that day. Loads of optimism at the start of the day, but 1-1 (did Danny Lennon score?) and then the downward spiral. I only went to a handful more games in the next 7 years.

There were also 4 defeats against the Pars in 1996/97 but the only one that comes to mind is the last one at Starks. It was the end of the glory years.

Yeah, was just about to post I remembered a crowd v Stirling well over 3k! Paul Hartley kept us in with a shout that season.

edit - seem to recall a terrific 3-2 win after being 2 down at Love Street? Think we beat St Mirren 4 times that season too.
