Hope Matthews recovers well and quickly.

Will we ever have a full squad to choose from this season? We always seem to to have someone bloody injured. Decent argument to suggest if we had a full squad last season, or the one before that we might have been up in the championship already.

Last few years have been an absolute disaster regarding them. It’s the risk at this level of course.

Always seems to be our better performing players at the time that end up injured as well.

Cuthbert, Bene (when he was actually our best defender), Craig Barr, Vaughan (twice) , Dingwall.

Not trying to deflect from the utter ineptitude of the team at the weekend, or away from home in general, but the injuries really are quite a massive reason why we are still down here.

Too bloody true, but possibly underestimating the ineptitude that has left us watching a loaned out player literally relegate us, left us playing a field player in goal, etc. I do question the injury narrative, in that almost every team can describe similar woes, I just think that our response to those injuries has shown the inability of our team/club management to adapt. Now, certainly, the 17-18 (financial) losses caused a good bit of that response, but there is a level of head in the sand/it can’t happen like that again, that seems to have infused our plans for this season and is coming home to roost.

It is a stated aim of the board to break even this season. They couldn’t have been clearer about that.

We brought in a trialist to fill the bench when we had four injuries to forwards. We could’ve had nobody? Would that have been better somehow?

Why would we just race out and sign an attacker when come Peterhead in a few weeks we’ll have seven options for four spots, rising to eight when Smith returns? So nine players for four spots in the current system if we’d signed someone else? Doesn’t seem a good use of resource. Free agents are (generally) guys that have been passed over this summer by everyone else. Loanees often have to play according to their contract - see Barjonas last season. Would you like it if Bowie couldn’t get in the team because some average Rangers youngster had to play?

Would you prefer a struggling League 1 club ran a youth team, when Easton’s double Title winners has produced Jamie Watson, who we go out of our way to avoid playing, and Dave McKay who was actually here pre-Easton? Would you be happy if we diverted money from the first team to pay for it?

‘Begging for season ticket sales’ = running an effective marketing campaign. You’d be whining if they didn’t.

‘Relying on fan contributions’ = £40k or so the club didn’t have last year. Again, great work from the club. We wouldn’t have Gullan otherwise.

The pitch is being used to raise income. This initially goes into paying for the pitch, because nothing is free.

I’m as frustrated as anybody else but there’s some utter nonsense spouted on here when we lose a game. There are valid complaints about how we perform on a Saturday, but there’s no need for absolutely ridiculous complaints about youth teams and y we no sign anyone. We have a squad of 22 currently. Barring injuries, that’s plenty, so it makes sense to hold off until if/when the injuries arrive - like we did with Gullan, like we may do with Matthews depending on how long he’s expected to be out.

How refreshing to see a rational, objective, considered view on here instaed of some of the waaaaash we get on here.

Well done sir !

Take the captaincy of Bene. He’s never been the same since getting it. Same happened with Alan Walker. Just let him concentrate on defending.

Problem is who do you give it to? There's not a single leader in our entire squad.

This weeks FFP points of note:

  • Matthews out for at least 7 weeks with a broken cheekbone
  • Gullan cuptied for this weekend
  • Vaughan back in full training and very close to a comeback
  • Dingwall not far behind him
  • McGlynn in talks with Baird about a short term deal.

Would agree with this and I think it is one of our downfalls. Hopefully the signing of Baird (if it goes through) will help address this slightly.

I had a look at our starting line up from Saturday and of the ten outfield players that started the game, the average age is 23.7 which is incredibly young. This would drop down to 22.3 if McKay started ahead of Davidson as many have said.

For some reference, the East Fife starting line up had an average age of 27.5 and Arbroath who cruised the league last year had an average age of 28.7 from their best outfield 10.

Obviously it doesn’t help that two of our most experienced players in Bene and Davo have huge question marks over their form but I do think the team could use a bit more experience. It was evident on Saturday how much the equaliser changed the game. Obviously goals can change games no matter what but I’d like to think another experienced head or two can help settle down our young side a bit better in spells where they are up against it.

I see another derby defeat for the Rovers gets relegated of the back page of the press. Fife Flyers pre season seemingly hotter news . Oh dear maybe next time bearing in mind your fantastic home form.
