How people pronounce place-names very rarely changes over the centuries so is a handy tool in toponomastics (the study of placenames/landscape features names). Gaelic place-names emphasise the first syllable of single words or the first syllable of the last word in multi word place-names. That still holds true even where in later centuries the spelling conventions squeezed multi word names into single words. That means BalLOCH near Inverness with its second syllable emphasis used to be a multi word name - Bail' an Locha - settlement of the loch.
