Interesting seeing these posts looking back over the thread. Just shows how things work out. I wonder if it would have been better for Ramsay to go out on loan rather than Bradley that first season. Bradley now the heir apparent at Anfield and Ramsay nowhere.

Fair fcuks - got that wrong. But, Ramsay was ahead of Bradley in the pecking order. The injuries fcuked any chance of him getting a chance and now, well, can't get on the bench for a league one team?

I don't know what planet you live on but this is hardly an irregular occurrence at any level of football.  What a bizarre comment.

Maybe my mind playing tricks on me, but it seems to be a more recent invention?

The starting captain for the day should remain the captain for the game imho - seen Liverpool hand the armband around 3/4 times a game (especially when Milner/Henderson) were getting bits of games which is just daft.

Now Goodwin has been levelled a fair bit of criticism over the season but with the last few games he's changed things (although the injuries to Holt and Gallagher have forced his hand in this) I do wonder if he'll be reflecting on that and seek how much the reduction of passing between the defenders held us back for long periods.

If we win another 3 games that puts us on a very respectable points tally for the season with a brilliant goal difference. If we go up first time are we gonna jettison Goodwin at the first instance or will we persevere?

I have no doubt that if we go up, Goodwin will stay in charge - any sort of debate would be moot - they're not getting rid at that point.

But taking confidence from him finally cottoning on to what game plan might suit the team after a year in charge, seems a tad optimistic.

Yeah this. If you feel you need a 'Leadership Group' then you pick it from the players selected. You don't select players based on whether they're already in a Leadership Group (though I guess it's inevitably a factor in a coin flip decision like Cooper v Souttar).

Of course its a factor. I'd wager that the final backup centre back selected by most countries in most big tournaments have barely played a minute between them.

So its more than just about ability.

The Thompsons weren't trying to make a profit. ET was happy to plough his money and ST happy to take his salary and share options. They were still really bad a the whole running a sustainable football club too though.

You don't even have to win European ties to get European group stage football any more.

Even without European football other top flight clubs make money.

Indeed you could argue plenty money has been made from Utd recently just that none of it found its way to the owner.

I don't think that's the sales pitch you think it is.

Scottish fitba is for suckers - we could rake through all the clubs accounts to prove this, but its fairly self-evident.

  6. 1 hour ago, invergowrie arab said:

That's not even remotely true. Ogren has just been really bad at it.

Scottish clubs reaching European group stage football should be achievable on a fraction of the budget required to do so.

The Thompson's were pretty crap at it too.

What's our profit/loss table looking like (before benefactor loans) over the last 20 years?

And we've never won a European tie in that time, far less got near any group stage.

Casement Park: West Belfast stadium to have smaller Euro 2028 capacity - BBC News

The new stadium to be built at Casement Park in west Belfast will have a smaller initial capacity than originally planned.

There will be room for 30,000 spectators when it first opens, rather than 34,500. However, the plan is to increase the capacity after the Euro 2028 soccer tournament. Questions remain about whether the stadium will be built in time for the event.

An official estimate puts the cost of the redevelopment project at about £308m and the funding currently is not available. Nonetheless, preparations for the stadium reconstruction continue and there has been a re-think in terms of the initial configuration of the seating.

When planning permission for the stadium was granted in 2022 the capacity quoted was 34,578. The reduced capacity at the Euros will ease traffic and parking issues around the west Belfast venue.

The stadium will primarily be for GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) games but the design will allow it to host other sports, including soccer and rugby. If built, it will be the only stadium in Belfast with more than 20,000 seats.

Love it. Obviously a small tournament like the Euros wouldn't bring the crowds in, but later on... 🤣

How good were Gomis and Buaben as a central midfield duo - absolutely dominant in the tackle, couple relentless confidence to carry the ball forward time and time again.  Made Kevin Thomson look ordinary.

My favourite midfield duo for United, well, ever.

Can be easily argued neither were among the best midfielders we ever had, but collectively they just worked in tandem beautifully.

1109 on matchday and no thread. The apathy is palpable...

Feels like another game United should win but will struggle. Airdrie will probably score first then it's just a case if we can pull off another comeback. I don't think Raith will win so we should be looking to increase the gap at the top.

Airdrie have lost last two, I see. Form dip? Injuries? Bad luck? What's the script Diamonds?

Didn't go to the game. Considered paying for the PPV, but decided to do some work instead.

It’s a red card at every level and has been for at least a couple of decades.

Unfortunate, but losing the ball and trying to regain possession is how these types of fouls occur.

I can assure you, not at the level I play at.

Yeah, I think history has been unkind to Jackie McNamara. It all ended badly for him and he subsequently had a horrible time of it at York but he deserves credit for a number of things, including having the balls to play guys like Gauld, Souttar and Robertson at such a young age/level of experience, for clearly being the man who got the most out of Nadir Ciftci when he's never come anywhere close reaching those heights ever again, and for the great football we played under him at times.

Absolutely, player sales and recruitment in the latter part of his time with us was poor (the recruitment in the season we were relegated was simply unbelievable) but you can't only look at the negatives.

Reading this forum - the opposite is clearly true.

Firstly, I'll say I was a critic of the clown at the time - nothing to do with history.

Secondly, there was no 'having balls' involved in playing Gauld, Souttar and Robertson; yer half-blind grannie would have played them, because they were awesome.

In fact my argument at the time was we were probably playing them too much. Guys like Gauld needed a rest occasionally, but it wasn't until the great McDiarmid switcheroo that it finally happened when the clown swapped out half the team at the same time to predictable effect!

    Wild take.

Houston managed to turn around said team from a 7-1 thrashing at Ibrox to win the Cup and finish clear in 3rd. The following season wasn't bad either from memory before the normal decline began.

I'd argue McNamara and Courts were better than Mellon

We were 4th in the league when he took over and he was the one in charge for the 7-1 game. I don't think that's the Lazarus style turnaround you're making it out to be.

Fair fcuks, he won the Cup and he'll always have love for that, and he did a fairly steady job for a bit. But I have him firmly in the 'inherited an already great squad and did little to progress it" camp.

Also tainted by the fact he didn't recognise the talent coming through at the time and quit/wassacked in the huff.

  13. 23 hours ago, adamntg said:

It obviously went wrong for McNamara after GMS and Armstrong went to Celtic, and he got lucky with Gauld coming thru, but he also signed Andy Robertson and Ciftci and for a year and a bit United played their best football since the 80s.  That 4-2-3-1 with Rankin and Paul Paton sitting was outstanding.

You can’t compare Mellonball with that.

You're confusing managerial ability with the talent in a team.

McNamara was a fraud of a manager. He took the best squad we had since the times of Jim and shat all over it. We all remember that golden period where we were scoring 4 goals a game and playing majestic fitba. What we tend to forget is that it lasted barely a couple of months and was all over by xmas, when we didn't win in 7 and never really recovered.

I said it at the time - we were playing great fitba in spite of him, not because of him. A literal mannequin could take a team with Gauld, GMS, Armstrong, Souttar et al and win a few games in the SPFL.

Give McNamara credit if you want for Robertson. I'd say it was a complete fluke. In the same transfer window that he signed a future Champions League winner, he also signed Kudus Oyenuga. Nobody but nobody recognised how good Robertson was until he started turning it on in training. If you remember, he was signed with the idea he was going to be backup to another guy we had on trial - Graham Carey.

His managerial career since he was sacked sums him up.

Mellon on the other hand did a half-decent job with the shite he inherited. Half-decent. That's all.

As things stand, United have had three managers in my lifetime who could be considered unqualified/ virtually unqualified successes: McLean, Levein and Houston. The rest have ranged from dreadful to merely disappointing.

Could be argued that Houston had it easy, inheriting a great team that he already had a large influence on, and it was a constant slow decline as he couldn't replace players that he lost.

I might posit that the best manager we've had since then was Micky Mellon... which is, something.

  15. Middleton wasn't great, but I'm wondering if it's a particularly United fan trait to pour all scorn on one of the wide players. Even our good ones -going back to the likes of Conway and McLaren always seemed to get more than their fair share of hate.

Last night most of our pressure came down the left hand side, but hey-ho.

We're shite. That much has been obvious since pre-season, but the rest of the league is somehow even shiter, so we will probably make it up. We'll be kinda fcuked without sweeping changes though, that probably won't happen.

Im not sure whether he's going to have a career ruined by injury or not.

But all I can say is I was blown away by how talented he was when he was at Aberdeen. Hopefully he can overcome the injuries and we could have a hell of a player on our hands.

Whatever the reasons for his injuries, its looking like they've torpedoed any chance he had to ignite his Liverpool career.

Connor Bradley has been superb tonight. Ramsay will have a hard job ever getting a game ahead of him and TAA.

I'd be amazed if they let Watt go in January.

Whatever the merits of his playing contribution, the optics would be dreadful. Allowed to leave last January, not replaced, team relegated, brought back, rehabilitated, vice captain and then allowed to go again. Even United aren't that tone deaf.

that is not funny austin powers GIF

To be fair, last season was probably the least of his own money that he put in - £800k.  Most of the losses were covered by cash we had in the bank last year.

No idea how we went from a small profit (albeit a 1.9m operating loss) in 21/22 to a £5m operating loss last year.  Especially when the talk was of being able to be in a breakeven position.

So in his best year his hobby only cost him £800k - lovely stuff if you've got money to burn I suppose.

The thing is he has said he is not a charity and intends to make a profit. It'll never happen. How can a successful businessman not recognise that?

What we really need, ahead of striker even, is a right sided centre back. I'm not against the concept of Ross Graham. He's a solid enough back-up centre half at this level but he's terribly one footed and really looks out of place on the right side.

This always strikes me as weird; there are countless right-footed centre-backs across the globe playing as a LCB and nobody ever bats an eyelid, but left-footers on the right never works?

It shouldn't matter a jot. If he can't play there it's because he's not good enough, not his foot preference.

  20. I'm not saying he was wrong to do it, but I was surprised when Goodwin made two changes at half-time, given we'd scored two goals in the previous 10 minutes.

I'd tend to leave Moult on no matter how poorly he's playing - he at least gives you an option - I remember Watt in the last 5 mins picking the ball up in the right-back position.

Anybody know who the Dave is commenting on DUTV , he’s the most biased commentator on any club tv

Biased on club tv is to be expected. Dave, however, is just a slavering fud who continues to be employed despite not understanding he's meant to be co-commentating rather than screaming nonsense like every other punter in the stadium.
