  6. Former Scottish International Tommy Hutchison has published his autobiography Hutch Hard Work and Belief. Tommy grew up in the austere Fife Coalfield, the son of a Cardenden miner, in the 1950s Never considered good enough to play for his school team, and not playing a competitive match of any sort until the age of 15, he still retained a burning conviction that he would one day pull on the dark blue shirt of Scotland. He finally achieved his ambition, making his international debut in the famous World Cup qualifier against Czechoslovakia at Hampden in 1973. He played for Scotland in the team that played so well at the ‘74 finals. In a playing career lasting for 28 years, he appeared in exactly 1000 games, a record for an outfield player. He scored for both teams, Man City, his own team and for opponents Tottenham in the famous centenary Cup Final of 1981. He also holds the record for the oldest debutant in European competition when playing for Swansea in the Cup Winners Cup at the age of 43. He finally hung up his boots after three years at Merthyr at 46 years old. Tommy also played for Alloa, Blackpool, Coventry and Burnley and had spells in America and in Hong Kong. He is a very funny but very humble chap with an entertaining rags to being comfortable in a seventies footballer kind of a way story to tell! His book is published by Pitch Publishing and a signed copy can be delivered to your door by using the form below. Hutch' order form

  9. Good that you didn’t say you remember he scored at both ends. Tommy would dispute this. He actually scored both of his goals at the same end!

  15. Hello Mate

you might have seen my post on former Wasp, Tommy Hutchison, who has a book out this week. He might be an interesting subject for a future podcast. If you would like to talk to him I can pass on his contact details.
    Thanks

Kevin Shannon (I wrote the book with Tommy).

  16. Tommy Hutchison Tommy, who played for Alloa, from 1965 to 1968, has just had a book published. It will be of interest to Alloa fans, young and old, as he talks in detail about life at the Rec in that era. Below is a extract from one of the Alloa chapters. Here he talks about his early days at the club. “Recreation Park also had a significant slope from one goal to the other. I really enjoyed playing on the main stand side of the ground as this meant I was playing downhill. One other feature of the ground was the brewery on the opposite side to the bus station. When beer was being brewed, there was an overpowering yeasty smell in the air, not the best atmosphere for playing football! I didn’t know whether I would be a regular in the first team straight away or not but the bad luck of other players meant that the manager, Archie MacPherson, had limited options in terms of team selection. In my second game, a 2-1 win against Queen of the South, a lad called John ‘Bud’ Flanagan also suffered a broken leg. This was a life-changing injury for John in more ways than one as he had just been told before the game that Rangers were going to bid for him and take him to Ibrox. His injury put an end to their interest. In the third game, we played at home to Forfar Athletic, and the curse struck again when Jim Bailie, one of our best players, also went down with a serious injury, torn knee ligaments, that ended his season. With Flanagan, St John and Bailie all being out, my chances of staying in the team had increased due to their misfortune. In fact, due to the injury situation, there were games in my initial run in the team when the manager was forced to play five 18-year-olds in the forward positions. It did no harm, however, as we went on a fantastic run and won seven of my first nine games for the club.” Excerpt From Hutch, Hard Work and Belief Tommy Hutchison and Kevin Shannon This material may be protected by copyright. If you would like to read more of the book, signed by Hutch himself, at a discounted price (£18 +P and P as opposed to £25 in bookshops/Amazon) please click on the link below Hutch' order form
  17. Hi I have written a book with the ex Alloa and Scotland player Tommy Hutchison. It is about to be published next week. Tommy played for Alloa for three seasons in the sixties and has some great stories to tell of his time at the Rec. He was born in Dundonald in Fife and grew up up in a very poor mining community. His story about life in that close knit village is also a compelling one, a tribute to the way the Scottish working class looked after each other in the hardest of times. He went on to have a long and successful career (He holds the record for the number of first class appearances made-exactly 1000) playing for Blackpool, Coventry and Manchester City in the old English First Division as well as Burnley, Swansea, Seattle Sounders, Bulova in Hong Kong before finishing at the age of 46 with non league Merthyr. He played 17 times for Scotland including being a part of the heroic ‘74 World Cup team. The book sells on Amazon and in bookshops for £25. Tommy and I are selling the book for £18 plus P and P. If you would like to buy the book you can order from the link below. Apologies if I bump this post from time to time. Hutch' order form Thanks
  18. Hi, I am writing a book about Tommy Hutchison. I would be grateful to any of you who would have any memories of Hutch, either personal meetings or memories of his matches either at club level or for Scotland. I am hoping to have a memories section at the back of the book from fans of all of the teams he played for. Please either put your recollections as a post on this thread or by sending an email to the address below. A similar thread has been started in the League One section of the forum, mainly to attract the attention of Alloa fans but also any other contributor who has memories of him. Thanks in advance. Apologies if I bump this thread from time to time so to get as much coverage as possible. The email address is; mrmagicfootball@outlook.com
  19. Hi everyone, It's been suggested that I write a post on here, as my dad is writing a book ('Mr Magic') with and about Tommy Hutchison and he wants some memories from fans and people who met him or watched him play. As many of you will know, Tommy started his long and successful career at a club called Dundonald Bluebell before playing for Alloa Athletic. He also played for Scotland. If anyone has any memories which we could put in the book, my dad would be really grateful if you could send them over by email to mrmagicfootbal@outlook.com Thank you so much! Tom
