Seeing them isn't the same as meeting them. Both disqualified.

We had a conversation. I doubt it lingered long in his memory.

scene: Belgravia, mid 90s. Outside a very fancy hotel.

    Me: f**k. It’s David Bowie.

Bowie looks over. Hears Scottish accent. Smiles in a resigned manner.

My pal: you look the way we feel, David. You had a few last night as well?

Bowie: no lads, this is as good as it for me these days, then sort of chuckled.

Further pleasantries exchanged and we went on our way. Think me and my pal were going for a few beers in Soho after that so keen to be on our way.

Not exactly Peter Ustinov meets Bertrand Russell but there you go.

Ayr have had their Accies 2006 Quarter Final moment(Stephen Craig's handball at Dundee) and although you guys are at the top end  of the League, I would be surprised if Ayr are not on a downer.

I still remember the feeling of watching buses full of Dundee fans along Ruglen Main St on their way to their semi at Hampden v Gretna. Scunnered doesn’t do it justice.

Not sure if this is appropriate for this thread, but I'm getting worried about my mum. She lost her dad in November, then her aunt was in hospital for a month or so before dying recently, so she and my gran haven't really stopped with a lot of depressing admin stuff that nobody wants to be doing.

My younger brother also requires a lot of care but council budget cuts are reducing that quite a bit to the point that it feels like his life feels like an inconvenience to them. So that's also wearing her down.

I'm trying to help as much as I can, but I can see how it's affecting her physically and mentally and I'm worried about the fact that a lot of things will just get worse.

Totally relate to the bit about admin. People don’t realise how draining it is to phone multiple banks, insurance companies, council etc etc with the same script: I’m phoning because my dad/mum/husband is dead. Just awful.

Have to say our fans were  excellent last night the signing and the goading of Accies fans was brilliant. Please bring this atmosphere to Palmerston as that is like a library just now 👏👏👏

Agree, and bonus points for “you’re going home to shag your sister” - certainly brought a good laugh in the home end. Might be a reference to the infamous incident in the lift at Motherwell Station a few years back. Therefore point deduction for poor geography 😄

The Coast guy. Totally forgotten his name as I've made every effort to forget he exists. Last I was aware he would pop up on GB News screaming about freedoms and railing against COVID safety measures which I know were controversial and divisive but he seemed to think it was some kind of Government plot to control our minds or some guff.

    ETA: Neil Oliver!

His videos pop up on YouTube all the time. The titles are always “they are coming for your families, and the catastrophe is upon us” type nonsense. I have literally no idea who or what he’s on about. It could be real sophisticated dog whistles but…. It’s on GB News too so I doubt it.

It is the thing that must gnaw at the soul of Conservative and Unionists and Unionists as a whole. While they'll make great play of the benefits of being "one of us" or "part of this Great British family" (🤮) they know, deep down, or may even have first experience of the fact they'd ship you to the fever Islands, enslave your kids and f**k your wife, burn down your house and nick your last rolo without a moments thought if there was a smidgen of personal advantage to be gained.

I hold no candle for Northern Irish Unionism but the hilarious inevitablity of seeing them strutting about Westminster post GE2017 only to get roundly shafted as soon as it was expedient to do so, was almost worthy of sympathy. Almost but not quite.

I recall an anecdote about the late Rev. Paisley speaking to a new MP at Westminster (could have been an SDLP representative) along the lines of “I know it’s great to be elected here, just remember these people don’t give a damn about you or the people you represent” He knew because that’s how he felt as well. I suspect some Tories like Mundell know this but don’t care for financial reasons. Others like Bowie are still at the early stage of delusion.

I have the distinct feeling that Starmer's problem is pretty simple, but that doesn't mean that there is an equally simple solution.

When I was growing up in the 1960s and 70s,the political battle lines were pretty clearly, if somewhat simplistically, drawn. The Tories were the toffs and stood for the toffs and those who wanted to be toffs, with odd Alf Garnett sort thrown in. Labour were for 'the workers', bearded academics and perhaps some younger toffs embarrassed by the obvious social inequalities. The Liberals tried to occupy the middle ground and the SNP only won the occasional by-election.

Now, the Labour Party is faced with a fractured political system and, in parts, a deeply hostile press.  They can't scare 'the south' with anything remotely left-leaning or too pro-trades unions, they can't frighten 'the north' with things that look too right-leaning, or in any way being seen to be pro-EU. They face a deeply sceptical Scottish electorate some of whom look on in disbelief at Labour's views on the EU.

He has to present a seemingly unified policy outlook and platform to the distinct electorates in England, Wales and Scotland and I'm not convinced it is achievable.

The Tories have no such problem. They know that they (National Liberal and Conservative/ Unionist)  haven't returned a majority of Scottish seats in a general election since 1955 so, for them, Scotland is a lost cause. They punt the risible 'lower tax and better public services', dodgy views on asylum seekers/immigration, levelling up, 'Laura Norder' and taking back control apparently by handing control of Channel crossings and the road network around Dover to six French blokes who work on customs who might not turn up for work. Their base loves it and laps it up.

Yet some try to claim that this is a "united" Kingdom.  Even the late Frank Carson couldn't sell that with a "it's the way I tell them".

Good post. The part that jumped out was that the Tories see Scotland as a lost cause (think they realised this a while ago). Labour may well feel the same - assuming they had the humility to understand that. What is the logical conclusion of the main UK parties being incapable of winning seats in Scotland and only focussing on English voters? I’d like to think that an amicable divorce settlement would be the end-point, but neither party will ever concede that.

If you want to pay by card to get in or pay by card for (the vastly overpriced) food then NDP is not the ground for you 😂

    You'll need cash for both.

This is correct. Hamilton Academical is a strictly cash-only business. Used notes preferably. The reasons why this is the case in 2022 are not discussed in polite society.

Not a fan of folk recording themselves at the fitba.

Still I wouldn't be an arse to these guys.

To be fair to the young fella, he doesn’t really film during the actual games. His content is more about build-up to games, stadiums and club history etc.  He is about the only one of those “content creators” who is worth watching. I enjoy his stuff.

What ever happened to Farage believing nations should “take back control”?

Also, it’s hilarious that the dirty b*****d has been reduced to grifting to the five people (six including you) who watch GBNews - this, the con artist once given his own green room at the BBC.

True. But the horrifying thing is he’s not even the worst on the channel. The truly appalling Dan Wooton (formerly showbiz gossip monger for the S** and celebrity shit stirrer on “Lorraine”) has his own 2 hour show!! His pathological hatred of Scotland’s FM is chilling/hilarious depending on how many drinks I’ve had.

  11. I know I’ve only me to blame, but occasionally watch GBNews just to annoy myself. Tonight Farage extended the “once in a generation” lie to “a lifetime”.  To a live audience of gammons who seemed keen for us to have another referendum to get shot of us. Feel the love, Scotland. Feel the love.

Every year I half expect them to go back to the vertical stripes and black shorts, or the “Sunderland strip”,  which wouldn’t be good.

    I like both of these.

I was the same, even earlier. I used to wait until the limited edition picture sleeves and coloured vinyl had sold out before buying a record.

    That showed them!

    Wise.

Although it was impossible to get  Dickies record on black vinyl. If anybody has one, it's probably worth more than the coloured ones. At least 50p.

The Stranglers pink ep had specially "lumps" on the vinyl which I remember being impressed by for some reason.

  14. I didn't buy them in the early 80s cos they were just a marketing gimmick to get you to pay more money for the same thing, like picture discs. Apart from A Promise by the Bunnymen cos the cover was so good. Then someone  (Factory?) realised you could use the extra playing time creatively. My favourite was the New York mix of This Charming Man by The Smiths, which the band hated apparently.

I think I sold it to get money for fags. Thatcher's Britain right there, kids.

  15. Bump.

The Baroness was on GMTV this morning, trying out her new persona as liberal, alternative Tory commentator for the early risers. The common sense voice of middle North Britain. Scottish, but the smiley kind with a media-friendly accent. 3 Lions etc...

I dont think in my lifetime I've ever seen a politician get such an easy time from the media.

Chiellini is a God of a player.

Not just a world class defender and an all-round nice bloke by all accounts (and someone who has a BA in Economics and a Masters in Business administration), but he has the ability to instantly take your mind back to younger days.....the Italian team of the early 80's for instance, where each and every one of their defenders would murder you, your family, and everyone your family has ever spoken to, just to win a throw in.

The phrase 'throwback to an earlier time' can be overused, but Chiellini is its living embodiment.  The summer of 1982 and the world cup in Spain kept on floating into my head every time I saw him last night...happy days.

The ironically named Claudio Gentile comes to mind. If there was an algorithm for most influential player with fewest touches of the ball, it would be him.  Of course he touched plenty of other things, but always out of the the referee's sight.

We had the Inter kit from 2012-2015.

Despite being a former Holy Cross kid, I've always wanted the green and blue hooped away top to make a comeback.

    Oops forgot about that kit.

I've still got the 90s Inter  one. Almost still fits in some places.

But I can't cope with Accies in the old Hamilton Grammar colours.
