  1. Famously got the rivers Tyne and Wear mixed up in that song. I'm surprised he was able to find the Styx.
  2. Is that the difficult second albumen?
  3. Just to clarify, are we discussing eggs from hens? I am partial to the occasional taramasalata, so could probably manage fifty.
  4. He doesn't mean "refute" which would mean he was able to conclusively demonstrate that the claims are false. He (presumably) means "rebut" which simply means he disputes the claims. I would also point out to several posters who have referenced Jimmy Savile that my spelling of his surname is correct. If you need a simple mnemonic just remember that the correct spelling incorporates the word "vile".
  5. I think Osman's an inoffensive big lump with a very sharp mind. Armstrong is a big fan of The Countryside Alliance and, as such, approves of killing rather than sex crime.
  6. I am above all this prurient gossip and speculation . . . unless it's that abominable creep Walliams. However I can't believe that any morally repugnant celebrity behaviour would be a major story. Must surely have a significant political dimension, possibly involving Liz Truss.
  7. Astonishingly, one of the better options is the Wetherspoon's on the Quayside. Extensive premises, large external seating area at the front and seating overlooking the river at the rear. Wetherspoon prices without Wetherspoon clientele. I don't think Tim Martin forks out for access to sporting events. Tilley's and the Bodega at the foot of Westgate Road are also civilised central pubs if that is one of your criteria.
  8. Maybe he was with Nye Bevan on that issue. The Labour party, he said, would win the 1950 election because successful Toryism and an intelligent electorate were a contradiction in terms. His own experiences ensured that no amount of cajolery could eradicate from his heart a deep burning hatred of the Tory party. "So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin," he went on.
  9. A typically eclectic mix from Dylan. Play “Anything Goes” and “Memphis in June” Play “Lonely at the Top” and “Lonely Are the Brave” Play it for Houdini spinning around in his grave Play Jelly Roll Morton, play “Lucille” Play “Deep in a Dream”, and play “Driving Wheel” Play “Moonlight Sonata” in F-sharp And “Key to the Highway” for the king of the harp Play “Marching Through Georgia” and “Dumbarton’s Drums” Play darkness and death will come when it comes Play “Love Me or Leave Me” by the great Bud Powell Play “The Blood-Stained Banner”, play “Murder Most Foul”
  10. Do folk remember the god-awful episodes of Off the Ball when they tried to incorporate Scottish place names in to a song lyric, in the manner of Perry Como's Delaware? I can't recall many of the dreadful attempts to shoe-horn locations in other than Lesmahagow and Killiecrankie, but others may have been less successful in blotting out the memory.
  11. No. This is the Verona branch of the family. Street brawls, murderous stabbings and under-age sex. Does that sound like Lochee to you? Rhetorical question, by the way.
  12. Don't mean to be a smartarse* but wherefore doesn't refer to his location, rather it laments the fact that he's a Montague. *Actually, I do.
  13. Not quite on topic, but an interesting read in which Marx discusses the usurpation of clan lands and the hypocrisy of the Countess of Sutherland's expression of sympathy for the anti-slavery cause. I suppose this expropriation was the first stage in privatising what was seen as a communal asset of the clan. Quite a lengthy read that might be summarised as "the fucking nerve of that woman https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1853/03/12.htm
  14. For a fleeting moment I thought the driver was the chauffeur rather than a golf club.
  15. I thought that, like Franco, you were effectively exiled to the Canary Islands to keep you out of mischief. I see that neither plan worked.
  16. Positively 4th Street: Dylan Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover: Paul Simon The 57th Bridge St Song (Feeling Groovy): Simon and Garfunkel Viva La Quince Brigada: Christy Moore Love Minus Zero: Dylan* *Apparently the Arabs introduced the zero to modern mathematics, a practice followed all too often by their team in recent years.
  17. Trenty, as I like to think of him, would have been off had his attempt to pull Gordon back been successful.
  18. The term "refrigerator mother" was coined by Austrian psychiatrist Leo Kanner in the 1940s to describe a mother whose cold, uncaring style so traumatized her child that they retreated into autism.1 The concept caused enormous pain for many families for decades before it was debunked.
  19. "The Onlie begetter" of the thread. Deserves a name-check.
  20. Having my kleptomania thwarted by (rightly) paranoid German shopkeepers. Is this a national practice or is it only required in my sweet-toothed locality?
  21. Dougal's smarter cousin contributes to the discussion of Prince Bonnie Charlie.
  22. Totally agree. They'd have been better off signing Cleopatra.
