  1. What a game at guys meadow! Last season the Nauld wouldn't have come back from being 3 down but have much more about them this season
  2. It's a very fair point and I wouldn't want to play only local teams either. Travel isn't a major issue across west/central scotland as it's no more than an hour to most matches. If there was various different levels and divisions though teams would be spread out based on their abilities so they wouldn't just be playing teams near them. More local district leagues could maybe be used at the very lowest levels but not for the top teams. All I'm saying is that amateur football in the west/central area could maybe do more to look at whether the current structure with various different league set-ups is making the best of things. Look at LEAFA - they have one league structure/association covering a large area without 5 or 6 different leagues with their own interests competing against each other. Conscious I'm hijacking a thread about the Scottish Cup so I'll stop now [emoji1787] lol.
  3. Was just using them as an example of 2 very nearby clubs in different leagues. Theres examples all over the place. Dumbarton Acad & St Pat's, Colville Park & Dalziel HSFP, Wishaw FP and Wishaw WW and that's only the Caley and Central leagues.
  4. Using the west/central area as an example, to me it makes no sense to have so many different leagues covering the same area. The best 2 leagues are widely considered to be the Central and Caley and they cover a similar area. Some towns even have a split with nearby teams in different league set-ups (Stirling with Milton in Caley and Bannockburn in Central springs to mind). SAFL, GGPL and SDAFA also cover large parts of the same region too. On a Saturday morning 3 leagues (SSMFL, GDSML and Glasgow Colleges FA) cover the same area (4 when the Churches league is included). The league committees all do a great job in running their own individual leagues but I feel it would be a good time to at least consider pulling resources together, look at merging leagues and try to reshape the amateur set-up to stop it dwindling away even further. It might not stop teams folding altogether but a larger set-up could absorb these losses better, would be more competitive as teams would find their level within the divisions and would be stronger financially rather than various leagues running 1/2 divisions and competing for new teams etc.
  5. I'll be down tomorrow and to watch Cumbernauld whenever I can this season. Great wee club, good set-up, welcoming to visitors and played some brilliant football last season. Felt they were unfortunate not to get promoted. I know the season is full of ifs and buts but they were only a penalty miss in the dying seconds of the Arthurlie game from getting promoted and lost/drew a few games through weak goals etc (in my opinion). Am hoping that just missing out on promotion last season spurs them on and hopefully the new signings will make a difference. Looking forward to tomorrow as was at the same fixture last year and St Rochs brought a good crowd and it was an exciting game.
  6. Been to a few games in Ireland. Last game I took in was a bit random. Wasn't LOI but was in the preliminary rounds of the FAI Cup. Glengad Utd v Home Farm in the wilds of Donegal near where I was visiting. Pitch was on the side of a mountain and Glengad won on pens. Really enjoyed it but standard wasn't great imo. I'd say bottom level juniors standard, if that. Home Farm seem to have fallen from grace. I remember them being a big name back in the 80s/90s and they had a tie in with Everton at one point. Just goes to show that LOI clubs do seem to be in a constantly precarious financial position as other posters have said.
  7. Great site. Just about managed to figure some of it out [emoji38]. Have been to Iceland but didnt get to any games. Would love to go to the Faroes but dont think I could convince the Mrs to go north for a holiday again . Do the Faroese tend to follow foreign sides too i.e. the big Danish or English sides etc? And what's the standard like of the league like? League 1/2 here? I read a book about the Faroes a few years back but cant remember the name, am sure it was about Brazilians etc living in the Faroes and marrying locals etc. That's prob why I am intrigued! I could prob Google all this but it's better hearing from first hand experience.
  8. Loved reading this thread and seeing all the pics as the Faroes have always intrigued me. Mad how such a tiny outpost with a small population and challenges around travel and weather can organise a league so efficiently and manage to compete at all internationally and in European games (relatively speaking). Mantis, why do they sometimes play internationals at Toftir rather than the main national stadium at Torshavn? Do they feel it's a leveller in terms of remote location and the weather etc or is it a better facility?
  9. Took this game in tonight and I have to agree. Sometimes I thought I was watching a different game from the Arthurlie fans! Cumbernauld were the better team in my opinion and deserved to win, but that's a few times I've watched them this season and much as they are a good footballing side they do seem to give away soft goals. Be interesting to see what happens in the last couple of games.
