It might well be the case that there has been a degree of financial naivety and/or imprudence, but the notion that SG is the prince across the water just waiting to gallop in on his white charger and save the day is for the birds. I'm not, of course, suggesting that anyone aside from Gilmour and his pals believe that. Creating a divisive, toxic climate at the club will not accomplish anything positive.

I'm currently listening to Off the Ball (I know....), and despite initially highlighting that the introduction of VAR is yet another tedious opportunity to focus on the OF, what have they done? Focused on the Hearts v Celtic match. Have they even mentioned the controversial incident from our game yesterday? Perhaps they have. I have been floating about and might have missed it.

Of course, Sportsound are giving it scant attention and are much more interested in discussing how Rangers are faring.

According to BBC pundits it was a very soft foul, if one at all. If this is how VAR is going to operate, players will be throwing themselves to the deck at every opportunity if they think their opponents might have a chance to break. Dire.

Spoke earlier with a Celtic supporting neighbour. First I've seen of him since the pumping we handing out to them. He admitted to trying to avoid me after the game. The guy was raving about our performance. He didn't think Celtic played particularly badly, more that we were excellent on the day. He reckons in terms of domestic football, the way we set up against them was the most effective he has witnessed since the start of last season.

I'm sorry (nah, I'm not really), but if a team dominate a game, have a penalty award, and play the last 10 - 15 minutes against 10 men, yet can't overcome the opposition, well yes, yes they do deserve to lose. If you set out to shitfest a game but can't shitfest a result, you deserve to lose.

He is a dick, to be fair. That said, he pretty much kept St Mirren up in his last season with us, despite the PCA. It's interesting when you think about the impact key players have had on the fortunes of the club, especially when considering the perceived success or otherwise of their managers at the time. Broadfoot was central to our survival that season (notably his Roy of the Rovers performance at Tannadice). Ricky Gillies almost kept us up after Hendrie got us promoted, and would have done but for United buying themselves out of trouble. Losing Kenny McLean (our top scorer) on the last day of the January window all but relegated us. Steven McGinn should be credited with a central role in keeping us in the 2nd tier and securing the subsequent promotion to the top. Hladky kept us up under Kearney. For all the talk of the managers who were in post during these key periods, these players (in McLean's case, his absence) contributed massively to how things ultimately panned out.

Jack Ross was out his depth at Sunderland, and has been playing catch up since then. It was a mis-step, but an entirely understandable one. He left when his stock was high. Fair enough. I think he was a good fit for a club like St Mirren, and would have done well to stay a bit longer to cut his teeth in our top tier, but that's easy for me to say. I have no ill-will towards him, but no great sympathy either. He believed in the mythology that had developed around him, and overstretched, but you can't knock his ambition and self-belief.

Everyone will have an opinion on this, and I reckon that's a reflection on how Ross' career has developed. Some coaches go about their business in a fairly low-key manner, but JR has always had a high profile persona, and seems to have courted that. As a result, a certain mythology has grown around him, and folk have been monitoring his progress closely, many harbouring a hope that he'll fall on his arse. My view is that his previous (relative) success relied heavily on his coaching and backroom colleagues. He is a figurehead type. Articulate and polished. More style than substance. He'll be a Sky pundit within a month.

There has been quite a bit of chat on here regarding the possibility of Ethan moving on. I don't suppose that means a great deal, right enough. I would much prefer he stays, but also sad to hear that Joe might be heading to pastures new.

I wonder if this development suggests that Erhahon is in SR's plans, and Gogic coming in was very much with the centre half position in mind?

The suggestion that we should 'defend' how we run our club in the face of criticism from OF supporters takes laughable to a new level.
