What you call 'dicking about' is what other fans who've watched us generally call good football, and it's a big part of why we've finished 4th.

Trust me I've had many a heart in mouth moment watching us pass the ball about at the back this season, but the vast majority of times it's led to excellent attacking moves. That's just our style of play and in large, it's been a joy to watch.

Hearing old school shouts of 'punt it up the park' or 'just fucking clear it' is fine if you want to have us play like Morton. I just hope fans stay on side, back the team and trust the way we play as its been the best football we've seen in years and half the season Rhys's name crops up every time there's a management vacancy.

Agree I am old school, you don't piss about at the back etc...  we have lost a good few goals and probably more to come playing that way...     But when we are on it we are excellent and can rip teams apart through the midfield,    That is the reason we are 4th...   ( Break that down 4 th best in a 10 team league back in the day that was failure,  2 up , 2 down the rest mediocrity,  funny how things change)

In all fairness, I’d guess our entire back line in 6ft and above and includes Luke McBeth, and you’ll do well to find a more physically adept player in the league than Lewis Neilson. We also have Brian Graham up front.

I don’t think it’s a fair description, but I can see from the outside how it looks.

If we want to progress through this one then there are a few things we must do to give us a chance.

We need to limit the chances Thistle get at our goal to protect Hemfrey.

We cannot play a back 4 with Watson in any of the games.

Finally, we can’t continuously dick about with the ball in our own box all the time- especially on Friday night.

I think we all no the team, there will be no surprises,    as long as we remember this is a 2 leg game, and we don't shit the bed if we go behind, which we have previous for....

After watching Thistle there strengths are down the flanks with overlapping fullbacks and a talented wide player in Fitzpatrick (we don't). Airdrie always play narrow and I don't see this game being any different,  we will miss McCabe in the sitting midfield role, his passing and experience is invaluable in these type of games,,  McMaster is young, decent( not near as good as made out) but to me is a front foot player and can dictate play when on top,  he struggles on the turn and doesn't give enough full back protection ,  remember the marauding Milne ripping us apart second half,  Megwa  had no midfield cover that day at all,  I don't think this will be an issue with Ballantyne coming in to the side to plug holes,  I hope Lyall plays he is bang on form, but can see him dropping out..

    An interesting 180 minutes awaits

Just noticed that Jordan Davies' Connah's Quay beat Declan McManus' TNS in the Welsh Cup final yesterday. TNS had won all five matches between the two over the course of the season and finished unbeaten in the league, 33 points clear of... Connah's Quay.

Will be interesting to see how Davies handles the jump to level 2 in Scotland, but the fact that we've gone so far afield to sign a player bodes well... he's also played for the Welsh national team in Futsal, so we can at least expect him to have a better touch than most of our current squad.

Wonder if he's ever played at right-back...

Having played TNS in the final,  they are arguably the best side we have played this season, very sharp and technically good ,  Davies may be a pleasant surprise,  don't think he will have much trouble  in the Championship top level of Welsh football seems similar....

Courts would be the ideal replacement. I know he’s been at a few of our games this season, I think with friends(?), and he’s seemingly an admirer, but I think we’d need to get promoted or have another season in and around the play-offs before he became a likely option.

Fordyce and ATS are your two obvious continuity candidates. I suppose the question with Fordyce would be, would McCabe take him with? Would Fordyce want to stay so he can keep playing? I think he’s got at least another couple of seasons in him at this level, whereas I don’t think McCabe has the legs for that, and retiring to become an assistant manager is much less of a draw than doing so to become the main man. And, obviously, does Fordyce even want to be a manager?

I could see Kevin Thomson being linked with us. That’d be a big risk though as he’s done nothing in management other than coast League 2 with Kelty Hearts. And of course your Charlie Mulgrew, recently retired big name types will be mentioned. Whenever someone does take a punt on McCabe, which will be sooner rather than later unfortunately, we’ll be a more attractive proposition than when both he and Murray were appointed at least.

Do you think MacCabe is further up the food chain than Kris Doolan of Thistle.... A lot of similarities between the two,  2 very talented young managers which is great to see in the wastelands of Scottish football..

My impression of Thomson was that he moved on too soon before he'd actually shown enough to be an attractive option for a club. Walking League 2 with a huge budget doesn't really show much managerial ability, and even if it does, most clubs are in the market for someone who can get a group of players playing above their level, which he wasn't really able to show as most of his team were playing below the level they should have been at. Whether it's the case or not, from the outside it just looks like he enjoyed being a flat track bully in League 2 and then bailed when he realised they'd be struggling in League 1.

There's definitely a middle ground for young managers between jumping too early and protecting a reputation that you haven't even built yet like Thomson, and staying too long and undoing your good work. Unfortunately that middle ground for McCabe is in the next 12 months, but I think most Airdrie fans are fully aware of that.

For me the interesting bit isn't so much McCabe, but Fordyce. I think McCabe might hang up the boots this summer regardless so I don't think that's a hurdle to him getting a job. But Fordyce could easily play another couple of years at this level and probably more in leagues below, does he give that up to be an Assistant Manager somewhere? I'm not sure.

Good interesting points,  personally I don't see McCabe going anywhere yet,   next seasons Championship looks even more brutal than this,  with a lot of 'bigger clubs' currently underachieving,  Dunfermline,  Falkirk etc,    who knows how next season goes or if our recruitment goes to plan this off season,   IMO Rhys hasn't got another 'bad November ' in him,   if that's the case I could see him fall on his sword,  to keep his reputation intact,  Rhys has to keep moving forward with Airdrie or without,  can we with our limited revenue keep up or have we peaked,  look at clubs in previous seasons in our league. Arbroath, QP , they got one 'shot at glory' ,   our story is still not written this season,  can we go one step further .....  Time will tell very soon ..

dont kid yourself on, if he gets an offer from a club the size of ours he will be off. Even a Falkirk or a Dunfermline

I tend to agree a Dunfermline come calling and Rhys will be away,  there will be a time when he has taken Airdrie as far as he can,   arguably that time could be now......  4th place, in the Premiership playoffs is that our limit with our limited fanbase and revenue streams off the back of it....  Probably.....

    Thought the same yesterday.

I think Murray knows his best team though and I’m pretty sure he’ll play it in those playoff games if everyone is fit.

Murray was the same at Airdrie, at no point did you feel he knew his best team,  he won games , but don't know why he doesn't go further, do you think he can make the step back up to the Premier or is this his level..

Not the worst position to be in.  Airdrie already secured fourth and third requiring; Airdrie victory, Partick loss, turn around 10 goal shortfall.  Not impossible but hopefully Airdrie see going for it as too much of a risk at this stage and will now focus on the play-offs by resting their key players.  Also Morton have still to secure 5th with Dunfermline or Ayr able to catch them - hopefully they will be up for the Inverness game.

    Always liked Morton ........

Yikes Shudder GIF - Yikes Shudder Shiver GIFs

Airdrie will definitely rest the majority of starters,  the likes of Gallagher's,  a Murray Aiken,  McCabe himself, ATS , Dunlop will probably play,  weakened yes but still decent players..

I have found our 2 home games against QP were very tight games which could have went either way,  a little surprised you have ended up at the wrong end of the league....

The player who impressed me most was the big RB from Celtic, McPherson is he one of the reasons for your drop off, he was quality..

yeah but my point is in the 90's you had how many times that number?  5x 6x  not sure  ?

Is there another club in Scotland that has lost such a big % of their following ? Cant think of one

In the 90s we were getting decent crowds at old Broomfield,  Home supports were never great we then as we do now rely on large away followings to swell our average..

I would say looking back maybe 2.5k max home support in those days in the Premier League,  although the old firm games tended to be very busy with a fair few old firm ending up in our end swelling our numbers..

Crowd was 6,555 and Hearts sold around 4,300 - so more like 2,200 Airdrie fans which sounds more realistic unless I've missed something?

That crowd was quoted don't know if that was a turnstile number or. An online sold number , I had heard we had sold 7800 a couple of hours prior to kickoff, apart from North Stand and section at Centre stand for hospitality the rest was pretty well full, give or take a few randoms ..

  11. 51 minutes ago, Diamonds Are Red said:

We had nearly 3500 in the home end for the Hearts cup game. So far this season our total crowds are averaging under the 2k mark, noticeably higher than last season (1200ish) due to increased away support and the home end lifting from 900-1100 to 1200-1400 depending on the opponent.

As said the move to Broadwood did us no favours, too long in League One, the older fans passing on, maybe fans moving away from the area for work (Boots, Imperial Steelworks, Pye all closing) and not being in the town as much...

In recent years there has been a lot of new builds and potential fans coming into and growing up in the town - some might "bring a team with them" but also the potential for new folks to identify with their local club.

There was a bit of an uncertainty and a lot going on behind the scenes re ownership/fans trust etc... a few years ago, that didn't translate well to supporters and I guess potential sponsors/partners (?), in recent times there has been a stability in the ownership, much more connection with the community and businesses again which has been positive for the fans, sponsors and perception of the club.

The crowd debate comes up now and again,  (don't mention Falkirk FFS) main reason is finance,  we have the lowest crowd in the league 1814 ? ISH,  good for us from where we have been,  sniggers coming from the clubs who constantly post crazy losses and are in the same league,  enough of the points scoring..

Airdrie can blame the old firm,  why our crowds are low etc,I think it's irrelevant everybody has a choice , I would say most towns in Scotland could throw that line out it's been done to death.    We had 650 or so diehards when we were struggling in L1 and even they were on the drift,   crowds now being 1300est home fans and there is signs of a little apathy creeping in now as well IMO..

We are punching way above our weight and could still although unlikely be in the Premier next season,,    and need to build again to compete next season

Onto next season with Falkirk probably going to spunk OUR money like a drunken sailor and no Part Time possible ringer in the league it is going to be cut throat...

Let's never forget what we have achieved this season,  staying in the Championship year on year is going to be very tough for Airdrie moving forward ..

  12. Looking like this will be our highest league attendance in our final league game,  around 2k tickets sold to United,  hopefully we can break 3.5k. Need home fans to turn up though..

Another live game on the TV , to be fair to the much maligned BBC they provide great coverage of our league and Falkirk cannot mean either.. they have the ALBA Saturday teatime slot pinned down..

And still the only one I’d have in our team would be Brian Graham at 36 years old.

I think the rest of your comments are probably pent out of frustration but honestly can’t look past how much of a success this season has been. Right up until the Raith game I was always of the “8th place is the goal” camp but on top of that we’ve won a trophy, beaten Premiership opposition and qualified for a chance at the top league next season.

For what its worth, I do think the play-offs are probably a stretch too far for us (plus I totally can’t be arsed playing with VAR) but definitely worth pocketing the cash and building for next season in what is sure to be a much more open league. I’ve even spent a while on transfermarkt looking through the players in the Championship who are out of contract and getting myself excited: improvements wise I think we probably need a good four or five quality additions across the park to augment the squad.

As I say target achieved,  do we down tools and have half an eye on the beach, with the sun beating down yesterday, maybe a few did,  Rhys is 100 %right in publicly calling out his players, he will no doubt get criticised for it,   We are not a dirty side, but all season we have broke up play got organised,  tackled and basically fought our corner,  I will leave you with this damning statistic over the course of 90 minutes we committed 3 fouls and had no bookings......   Is it any wonder Partick Thistle rode us.....

  14. Airdrie have qualified for the Premier League playoffs with 2 games to spare, let that sink in for a moment,

I will be honest I never expected it, we are a team with plenty of weaknesses..... Now for the half assed autopsy,   i will throw a couple of names out there,  Graham, Dowds, Oakley, Muirhead, Diack they are the  name's of big physical strikers who have had plenty of joy against our defence,  every one of those players have used their physicality to bully our defence,   The only ones who count now are Graham and Diack,,  37 year old Graham first to react to a spill by the keeper and could easily have had a hatrick,  Diack who scored on his debut at Firhill last time put the fear on our eyes when he ran at us,   Basic isn't it, not great at all,  are we better in the playoffs bringing ATS back into the team,

Our faults can be cruelly exposed at at times, Megwa who is a good player,.not as.good as people make out,  he was got at second half by Fitzpatrick and Milne,  where was his cover McGregor didn't do the hard yards,  McMaster who should be able to see issues develop was knowhere and they ran through us at will,  2 young players who were schooled today.....   Credit to Partick a side who man for man are a better side all over the park than us, which I can accept, that doesn't mean you cannot beat them if you excel on the day yourself......

Onto the playoffs we need McCabe, Frizzell and Ballantyne back,  especially McCabe who is still one of the best players in this league, if we manage to progress further it will be on the back of Rhys, who will stand up to the challenge with him,  after today not many....  Love to be proved wrong....

Telfer has been an 8/10 every week, which is noticeable to Airdrie fans who see how consistent he is but to opposition players/fans that's probably not the kind of thing that makes you stand out. Frizz has been a 5 or 6 out of 10 in a lot of games this season but has also had a few (mainly since February) where he's been excellent, which is more eye catching.

I think that will be shown by Telfer winning our POTY, but Frizz getting in TOTY.

Is this years Player of the year presentation happening at the 1924 dinner or the usual on the park after the last home game..,  not heard anything though..
