More thinking about how prize money can be raised for the LL.

More money? Aren't they rolling in all that lovely cash from the TV deal that was coming as part of the B teams being in the league? 😇

  2. Not trendy perhaps but surely it's Paul McCartney.

In arguably the biggest, most popular, most influential band of all time and wrote or co-wrote some of the greatest songs ever recorded.

A songwriter who can casually toss away classic songs for other artists since he had better stuff for the Beatles albums.

In another vastly successful and popular band who musically were probably better than the Beatles but without the critical success.

A successful solo artist who has produced some fantastic solo records (and yes, some dross) across a wide range of genres.

Someone who has dueted with or collaborated with some of the biggest names of their respective generations (Stevie Womder, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Kanye West, etc)

An early advent of avant garde and electronic music, he's written film scores, classical pieces and everything in between.

    Tl;Dr - it's McCartney.

What is the positive case for allowing mobile phones in the classroom?  Aside from 'kids will go mental if you take their phones'?

There are some apps etc that can be useful (blookit and kahoot are quizzes that can be used, they can be used instead of a stopwatch and light source in science, you can look up stuff when doing research, you can live translate if English isn't your native language etc) but for many regions they can all be done on the tablets of chromebooks that each pupil gets. In Fife, where we don't have individual devices and nowhere near enough laptops to use, it's an easy way out if you don't have immediate Internet access. Personally I think they're more trouble than they're worth but there's plenty money to be made by 'education app' developers who'll insist that they are a massive benefit.

  4. We have a constant battle with phones - being used in class, being used for bullying/organising and filming fights etc. We would sometimes allow music with one headphone in but for most staff it's a very rare occurrence (revision for a test, doing an art project) and even then I always say to them "fine but pick a playlist and stick with it - no changing tracks, no skipping, no other apps".

We had a wee phase where we confiscated phones and were meant to hand them into the office, but the office staff (quite rightly IMO) weren't happy at the prospect of getting the blame if a £1,200 phone they were nominally in charge of was to go missing or get broken. We then had the bizarre idea of taking it to the staff room and leaving it in an (unlocked, unsupervised) area that the year head could then give back at the end of the day.

I honestly don't know the answer. Some the kids do show signs of addictive tendencies with their phones - literally not able to go 10 minutes without glancing at it, getting visibility nervy/jumpy if they have to concentrate on a task for longer than that 10 minutes, getting a sense of relief at the end of a period when they can get their phone out, etc. I think the toothpaste is out the tube though and I don't see how we are ever going to get back to anything different.

I have a 3 year old and he uses a smart screen at nursery and can navigate to YouTube and pick a video on my phone very easily even though initially we were keen to avoid screen time as much as possible. Even with him, if he's playing on or watching a video on a phone and it needs to go away he'll get angry and frustrated and want 5 more minutes and so on, and I dread to think what it'll be like when he goes to school.

I’d go radical and have winners of section 5-8 and section 9-12 play-off in a set piece final (Tynecastle or Easter Road type gig) for the final European spot. Aim is to keep it maximally competitive (and give the broadcasters another wee sweetie).

Given Sky don't give two shiny shites about the race for Europe etc already, I think you'd be surprised how little interest our flagship broadcast partner would care about this game...

BBC One and Five Live are defacto English stations. If you haven't grasped this, then I can'thelp you

But as mentioned previously, Five Live mention all the SPFL Results (and noted the consequences for promotion, relegation and play off places), have a reporter at a Premiership game on a Saturday (usually whomever the Old Firm are playing, but not always) and had full live commentary of the recent Rangers v Celtic game. So, it can be done. They also cover all the teams in the 6 Nations, cover British athletes when in individual competitions (golf, tennis, athletics, whatever) and will obviously do the same at the Euros. Or do you think Five Live ignores Wales v Scotland, Andy Murray, Laura Muir and our Euros games because they are really just an English station?

Even in England that handball is given 90% of the time.

That kind of negates your argument tbh. If it was a handball that gets given 100% of the time then maybe, but if it's only a 90% chance then a VAR isn't going to overturn surely? I guess there's maybe an argument that he should have been told to go to the screen to make sure mind you.

  8. That's the thing isn't it. Radio Five is good in that Chappers yesterday went through the results and mentioned what had been settled (he said Dundee Utd had all but confirmed promotion but officially still needed a point, and that Spartans had clinched the play off spot in League Two - do our sports reports even mention that kind of stuff?) because it's a national (UK) broadcast. Same for network news broadcasts etc. We aren't expecting a full run down (that should be done - but often isn't - on Reporting Scotland etc) but they wouldn't in England either, where the lower league and non league results in each region will go to Look North or whatever. A Scottish Cup semi final, especially one that had so much happen in it, is clearly a national story and not just a regional one.

  9. Thought the ref was fine actually, despite his previous form.

On the passback, Mehmet looked to the ref before picking it up, so whether or not you think it was a deliberate pass to the keeper, he was never going to give it as a foul.

On the penalty claim, I think it would have been incredibly harsh - MFW was already nearly on the ground when any contact was made and it didn't impede his ability to get to the ball. Had it been given then QP would have been raving and if the shoe was on the other foot I would be too.

The only other contentious decision was when Hamilton and Benedictus tackled each other then there was a possible red card to Hamilton for DOGSO... I think he also got that one right as it wasn't like the Queens Park man was in on goal with an obvious shot on (admittedly I was at the opposite end) and the only problem I had with the ref there was that he allowed far too much dissent and should have booked one or more QP players sooner.

For a Colin Steven match, I thought he did well and I didn't notice him at all really outwith those incidents.

  10. It's so annoying that McPake the other week was talking about how good Andy Tod, Taylor Sutherland and Liam Hoggan have been doing and yet we brought on Holmes when Sutherland was sitting on the bench. Holmes isn't our player and hasn't looked sharp at all in the few moments he's had. Sutherland at least in his brief appearances has had something about him.

Is there actually anybody at this game???

5000 odd if you believe the official "attendance".

If I was being very generous I'd say both teams had some chances, but other than Edwards excellent switch of play to Todd and Queens Park's move that led to Mehmet making a sharp save, there was almost no football played out there. We seemed the most likely to score then Queens Park got back into it. We responded by making a sub that made us worse and QP looked like the best bet for a winner, yet we had the best chance at the death through Kane.

A terrible game, the websites will have a hard time getting 3 or 4 minutes of highlights to post tomorrow morning.

  12. Ritchie-Hosler lined up in central midfield but seems to be roving about all over. Leaves Hamilton isolated a bit and means that McCann and Todd can't really do much as they aren't sure if they're going to be in space or not.

Ferrie made a decent stop early on from Kane and Queens Park had a cross that flashed across the 6 yard line but other than it's been yet another turgid affair here at KDM Group East End Park. Been nearly 3 seasons of this tbf, although at least last year we were grinding out wins.

Lovely afternoon though and the park looks in reasonable condition considering the stage of the season and the issues we've had down the Main Stand side. Just a shame the football is awful.

    Similar standard then.

Beating Falkirk, Airdrie, a Queen of the South who hadn't had a meltdown, an Edinburgh City who were solvent etc. was probably a tougher task than beating Hamilton, Cove, a Queen of the South who look more likely to get relegated than do anything else, an Edinburgh who have no money and are playing kids, etc. Your milage may vary of course. As I say though, going unbeaten is still a good achievement. Just not Brazil 1970-esque.

Just seen it, quite surprised at that to be fair. Although I've not really thought about who else could have got it.

I noticed Falkirk had 10 in the league one team of the year, only non Falkirk player was their striker from last year, Burrell who's at Cove. Be raging if you're that Falkirk striker that missed out!

Ross McIver, who has been really important for them this season. I guess having all eleven from Falkirk would be a bit weird but the league is absolutely dung this year by the looks of things and if a team goes unbeaten and scores loads of goals and concedes very few there isn't much you can argue.

An horrendous crash involving Chris Harper in todays Stage of the Tour of the Alps. Was leading the stage, when he hit a kerb, on a downhill, & went headfirst into a lamppost.

Fortunately pictured sitting up, following it, before being carted off to hospital.

Someone flying off at the same bit when some spectators came to offer assistance too. Crazy. Glad he seems ok.

  16. Loved this when it was on, it was one of the shows (along with the West Wing) that I'd download on LimeWire once it was broadcast in the States to watch straight away and then rush onto Television Without Pity to chat about on the message boards.

Still remember the realisation dawning as the arrangement of All Along the Watchtower swirled around as the Final Five were being revealed being just a great bit of telly.
