I've been watching this in instalments when over at my mum's place, and I got her well warned early on that she's just going to have to ignore the fact that people can somehow live for hundreds of years and not even age. I played right through Fallout 3, and put hundreds of hours into New Vegas and Fallout 4, and I don't remember it ever being explained. The wonders of magic Fifties radiation, I guess.

Edit: we're on Episode 6 now, and I'm impressed that it actually gets better as it goes on. Best thing I've seen on TV in a long time.

I mean in the games (the ones I’ve played at least) apart from the ghouls, super mutants or if humans are put in something like a cryo chamber people generally don’t live for hundreds of years at all.

Ah ok. I may have missed that at the very beginning. That makes sense.

Another thing that I don't think was explained was how Moldaver is still alive after a couple of hundred years given she seemed to be a surface dweller. I perhaps need to watch some bits again as I got distracted, but I do think there were bits they just didn't explain to those of us who never played the game.

Aye unless I missed it too I think you’re right that it wasn’t explained at all.

    Spoiler

I’m pretty sure she died at the end so presumably if they’re going to explain it, it will have to be via more flashbacks in future series.

  3. Oh and not surprisingly the shows been renewed for a second series. This must be one of if not the most acclaimed show Amazon has ever had.

If I had one tiny wee wrinkle it would be the depiction of racial diversity in the pre-apocalyptic world. I don't know if the game did this, so perhaps it remains faithful to that, but seeing so many people of colour in prominent roles (and a black and asian woman as the scientist couple) took me out of it a little as I know how racist America was back then, even California. It was the 1960's after all. It's perhaps a nod to the world building too, which could have had a little bit more exposition to it.

    .

But that’s it, it’s not the 1960s. In the fallout timeline the bombs drop starting in 2077. It’s just an alternate timeline massively influenced by some aspects of 1950s-60s Americana. The games have tons of things referencing the time before the war but don’t tend to have the direct flashbacks to the past like the show does so it’s hard to say for definite whether there was as much direct racism as there was in the real world time it’s inspired by. There’s plenty of xenophobia, Red-scare attitudes and nationalism due to there still being so much war between countries before the bombs drop though.

I'd rather play you at Pittodrie tbh. At McDiarmid it's a 0-0 with two half arsed sides strolling about. At least in Aberdeen your support would force you to try and win.

Aye I’d think we’d have more chance of scraping a shitty 1-0 at Mcdiarmid to be honest but drab 0-0s at any ground seems to be a speciality of this side recently.

Ideal scenario for Aberdeen would be County having to come to Pittodrie but I can’t see them doing that if they can avoid it.

I think Lewis Ferguson is a good player and he seems to be doing really well, but I also think there's an exaggeration in some people's heads about the strength of Serie A, maybe based on Channel 4 in the 1980s and 90s.

I doubt Bologna are currently stronger than teams like Luton, Sheffield United or Southampton, and there's far less clamour to get players from these teams into the Scotland team.

Whilst I’m not trying to say Serie A is up there with the premier league there’s no chance the likes of relegation fodder like Sheffield United would be challenging for the champions league spots in Italy. Never mind championship sides like Southampton.

This is the issue but you could argue he could replace Gilmour (great player but off the ball he struggles IMO) or McGregor at the moment if it's a like for like formation or you take one of the CB's out or play without a recognised striker.

He doesn’t play in that position really though. Pretty much all his success this season has been playing behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation rather than as one of the deeper players. I think that’s the main problem with giving him a game as if everyone’s fit McGinn and Mctominay are the two most likely candidates but seeing as they’ve been Scotlands main goal threats for the last few years I’m not sure if I can see Clarke picking him ahead of them. The last friendlies partly showed that Mctominay is not as effective in the deeper role for Scotland so I hope they don’t move him back.

Just thinking about the overwhelming temptation that Cormack must have had to tweet out an April Fool's this morning about appointing himself as manager or something (probably accompanied by a bad Photoshop), followed by a Lampardian transition to: "Seriously, fellow Dandies, Alan and I are working very hard - final stages now!"

It’s still relatively early on east coast US so you never know….

Stadium looks great, but I must admit, my eyes are drawn to the German beer and hot dogs on display in the left of your photo. That’ll do me!

Aye the beer was decent as you’d expect. Konig Pilsner I think it was. Don’t know how big a brand they are but was surprised to see very little of it elsewhere in the city. All kinds of other German beers like Veltins, Krombacher, Warsteiner, Paulaner, Hofbrau etc had advertising outside pubs but never saw them once.

  11. Yeah had a good weekend too. Did a lot of walking over the weekend and my legs have only just recovered.

Didn't have any issues with the airport but that may have just been because we came back on Monday afternoon which is presumably a bit quieter.

Enjoyed the game too was impressed by the stadium but probably a bit less though with the standard of the game. Expected a bit more. Hamburg looked really nervy until they got the goal and settled down but I suppose thats probably a result of their recent defeats and automatic promotion possibly slipping away again.

Went to the old sailor bar for a couple after the game. Nice wee pub.

Found plenty of decent places to eat and drink so would definitely recommend the city. Couple of pals already talking about trying to go to Cologne next.

  12. Cheers man yeah I only planned to go down the Reeperbahn after the game on the Sunday. Trying to avoid the stag-dos etc. was going to check out some Beatles stuff and then maybe some of the bars closer down to the water but those links look decent.

Got tickets for Hamburg v Wehen Wiesbaden. Ideally I would have preferred to go to St Pauli but my pals a Rangers fan who’s talked about going to see Hamburg for years to just went along with that. Plus with them both doing well this season and promotion being tight I’m guessing that game would probably be easier to get tickets for.

Aye I read up about the subway etc and saw that they didn’t have a tap and go type system like London or the buses here in Edinburgh so already downloaded the app. I’ve been to Munich and Berlin before and public transport over there always seems decent so I imagine Hamburg will be the same.

  13. Heading  to Hamburg for 3 nights in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on things To do? Couldn’t find a thread about it which I was a little surprised by.

Already got tickets for a game and planning to wander around the old town area to see the town hall, churches etc and then wander down to the docks area and the Elbephilharmonic.

I’m sure I’ll head down to the Rieperbahn at some point as well but was wondering if there was anything else people would recommend. Don’t really mind if it’s touristy or not. Not really fussed about seeing the miniature wonderland thing that seems to be highly rated in all the travel blogs but besides that am open to whatever.

Our 3 games against county would suggest otherwise

His was such an odd post as well. Saying that Aberdeen fans are acting like there's no problem when almost all of us are in varying stages of anger, apathy or dread about the current situation.

Plenty of stuff for non-Aberdeen fans to have a laugh about at the moment without making up scenarios.

One of those teams is only 4 points behind, and we have to play them twice - 30th March shaping up to be a massive game, as is 6th April. Can't see where any other points are coming from, St Mirren (A) - don't think so, Dundee and Motherwell both away - nah, Dundee (H) - not after the last home performance against them.

Tell me I'm wrong and we'll pick up a minimum of 13 points from those games...

I mean you’re kind of just making the same point I tried to. Saying I hope there’ll be two teams worse than us doesn’t necessarily mean there will be. Even a Derek Adams Ross County side would give us a tough game just now if he was still there.

  16. Yeah that starting lineup gave me the fear and it somehow turned out even worse than I expected. Having so many attacking options on the bench and then starting with 6 men in midfield never worked for Robson and surprise, surprise didn’t work here either. I thought Warnock would be fine for a short-term appointment but man it really is only heading in one direction.

Really hard to see us getting anything at the weekend. As for the rest of the season I think the hope is more that there will hopefully be two teams even worse than us rather than us improving.
