  1. With thanks to the Hibs Historical Trust, from the Hibs Trophy room... The Edinburgh Cup and 2nd XI cup The City Cup is definitely NOT the original 2nd XI trophy, which, as HJ correctly assumed, was awarded outright for their 3rd win.
  2. Oops! That nose-thumb was actually a reference to the West of Scotland FA which existed between 1877 and 1879! However this could also be viewed as Junior association and a direct forerunner to the first SJFA in 1880.
  3. IIRC it was late 80s, I kept records at the time but they're in a box upstairs! EDIT! Just looked there coz it was bothering me, it was 1986-1988
  4. In the 19th C, Junior clubs were generally those that weren't members of the SFA. The ill-fated formation of a SJFA in 1880 was regarded in the press as a nose-thumb at the SFA as they had banned clubs without a ground from being members. This was colloquially called the Public Park FA. The County FAs had high memberships but a lot of the clubs could be viewed as being junior in status.
  5. There were a couple of 44 match seasons (late 80s?) and they weren't popular. The split is a compromise for having a 12 team division.
  6. A distinct probability although I haven't come across any references to it being won outright. Perhaps a request to Hibs is in order...
  7. Possibly. Hibs are reported as winners in 1878 (so far I haven't uncovered any results for this season) and the competition stuttered to an end in 1899, only two clubs competed for it in the last two editions in 1897 and 1899.
  8. My post was concerning all the wealthy who bypass us plebs, royalty or not.
  9. People with money getting treatment quicker than the rest of us makes my blood boil...
  10. I'm currently reviewing the site's content (the Scottish Combination and Scottish Union leagues have had a few adjustments and will be posted soon) but I'll adjust the City Cup winner's list ASAP. It's likely it's a copy and paste error.
  11. Usual pish... the women are great at everything... the men àre absolute wallopers.

  20. After 3 months, research has now been completed for all seasons from 1893-2005, however info on 53 matches are proving elusive. 21. A big thank you to Bobby McNally for finding this while he was researching our missing Highland League results. 1947/48 North of Scotland 2nd XI League We see from the honours list that Inverness Thistle were the champions but how was this achieved? The agreed plan was for "the top two teams in each section to play off for the championship on the home and away principle". [Football Times, Nov '47.] Two of the sections were completed with Rothes being favourites to top the Morayshire Section. The report continues "It is tough on Thistle, after annexing 35 points out of 36, not to get any award". This seems to rule out Thistle taking the title unless they played the winners of the Ross-shire section. Central Section P W D L F A Pts Inverness Thistle 'A' 18 17 1 0 81 31 35 Hill Rovers 18 11 0 7 74 41 22 Fort George 18 9 3 6 55 42 21 Corinthians 18 9 3 6 56 46 21 Caledonian 'A' 18 7 5 6 62 55 19 Clachnacuddin 'A' 18 6 4 8 53 64 16 Camerons 18 7 2 9 45 64 16 Nelson 18 6 3 9 47 48 15 Nairn County 'A' 18 1 7 10 37 67 9 Resistance Welders 18 2 4 12 30 74 6 Ross-shire Section P W D L Pts RNAS Evanton 16 12 1 3 25 Balintore 16 10 2 4 22 Ross County 'A' 16 10 2 4 22 Cromarty 16 9 2 5 20 Invergordon 16 7 4 5 18 Alness 16 6 5 5 17 Tain 16 7 1 8 15 Logie (Athletic?) 16 1 2 13 4 RAF 16 1 1 14 3 Morayshire Section Membership Rothes 'A' Elgin City 'A' Forres Mechanics 'A' Lossiemouth 'A' 30th TB Auldearn RNAS Lossiemouth As Ross-shire section winners RNAS Evanton had disbanded after the base closed in late March, Ross County and Balintore, who tied as runners up, "the second-placed teams will have to play an extra game to decide the qualifier for the knock-out competition for the Championship Shield." On 1/5/48 the People's Journal noted... "winners here to meet winners of Inverness section, with winners of that game to meet "Morayshire League leaders" (unnamed). That playoff, on that day at Invergordon, resulted Ross County 4-3 Balintore. In an apparent change: "County now play the leaders of the Inverness Section for the North of Scotland Minor League Championship [sic], but so far have heard nothing about the date for that game." From this it appears that the Moray section was unfinished.
  22. We've discovered that a record 26 clubs competed in the 1947-48 season in three regional divisions and a play-off. More info to follow...
