Last game ends circa 11.30 pm ? Aye right

Do the floodlights on these council facilities still cut out at 10pm ?

Certainly a different idea. Maybe a cup final Saturday, If 4 different teams get to 2 different cup finals maybe play them same day, same ground, a 2 and 5 o clock kick off? Beer tent, big telly, ample catering what could go wrong?  But not Palmy, they don't have a team in the league, yet!, or the NWCC, no spectator facilities, still not found a toilet yet in half a dozen attempts. Would help ease fixture congestion also.

Totally agree re amount of games at this time. Vale went through exactly same last season. Which could be taken as a good omen wrt winning the league.

Had a wee chortle at your rugby analogy, exclent analogy.

Star need to try and keep the players free from injury and burn out for the play off, which I presume they are all in to win.

I know they will be massive underdogs; raffle ticket and prize springs to mind. Depending on when it is, fully intend to be at Islecroft to show support to our champion.

Last time Star were in the SOSFL i'm sure they played a cup final at Nithsdale on a Friday night, and a game at Dalbeattie on the Saturday

And now the fixtures are even more congested, Creetown v Star, tomorrow postponed

Yeah a few folk around me confirmed the changes in personnel and even positional.

Totally agree that the League is Star's priority, was disappointed in the style adapted, especially after witnessing them pre my enforced sabbatical. They had a nice flow about their play from back to front then. The Ferry looked pretty much at full strength, think they have a smaller squad so maybe not a viable option. I should know the boys name by now, but it escapes me every time.

Was I right about the back 5 or was it an illusion, a few others definitely thought so too.

The 2nd half was setup for Star to score a second, particularly after that spell when Rennie blasted over the bar, a post was hit and a not quite goal line clearance. To then score a simple header summed up their night.

How did Potts miss that chance up at the town end? That boy frustrates the hell out of me. Watched him at Threave last year score a barrel load against weak opposition only to dissappear when needed in the one ir two tough games.

I don't like singling out players but someone needs to put that boy on the right path for me or he won't fulfill his potential.

Anyways glad you are getting yo games, and you never know you might get your wish of 3pm kick-offs next season.

    Broxie and his Bears await.

Looked like 5 at the back. To be honest it looked like get the lead and defend at all cost, try and save themselves for Saturday. Reminded me a bit of a game of rugby, get the ball at the back and launch up front or kick for touch. Actually thought if the pitch and conditions were better Star would have nicked a second.

The game was probably symptomatic of the league this time of year. Star have 6 games in 12 days, 3 tough league games, 2 tough semi finals and a cup game against an at present Lowland League team. Very much the case of horses for courses, grind out results, use the squad, prioritise games, keep everybody fit and suspension free. Doesn't always make for great football. Heavy pitches this year isn't helping, did notice 2 or 3 cramping up last night.

Reaalised at game tonigh that I haven't done a match report since my return. I know its a cup and nit the keague but can't be bothered starting a new thread for a couple of games.

Haig Gordon Cup Semi-Final at Castle Cary Park on the outskirts of Creetown just across the road for that nice cheaper than everywhere else fueling point.

Creetown 1-1 Dalbeattie Star aet. Creetown won 4-2 on penalties and have a local Derby agnst Newton Stewart at St.Mary's I believe, yesss, to look forward too.

From the off Creetown were on the front foot pushing Star back, but not really creating much to get excited about. I think I have seen Creetown more than any team this season and their style of play is pleasing to me. They try and play out from the back bringing into play both full backs, which results in the midfield and forwards looking for balls into feet or creating space to receive passes.

Unfortunately a lot of the play was rushed and forced. This style if play cries out for someone to orchestrate the play and calm it all down a bit. But nobody, not even the Ferry Modric was apparently able to put their foot on the ball and control the play.

I haven't seen Star since Sept and must be honest they were a massive disappointment;  not once I the entirety of the game did they even attempt to play football. It was very much route one with every punt from keeper or defender aimlessly tossed into Creetown's half. Which after witnessing some excellent play earlier in the season was hugely dispiriting.

It was inevitable that Star would take the lead and almost as inevitable it would come from a set-piece, a corner. One of my pet hates is when a keeper bellows out 'keepers', and then doesn't come out aggressively to take control. The inevitable result was a Star defender easily scoring unchallenged and with no physical intimidation from the keeper, any keepers I coached will be nodding in agreement at this. When a keeper comes out there are no prisoners, I expect to see bodies in his wake from both teams.

The Ferry became more of a goal threat for the rest of the half and had a few good chances that were squandered by poor decision making by any in yellow

    Star in lead at half-time.

The 2nd half started began bizarrely with, and I checked with fellow customers, Star playing the entirety of this half with 5 defenders across the back. Not a word of a lie 5 defenders.

It been to look like either Star would hold out or sneak a 2nd goal. Creetown hit the woodwork, defenders but mainly the River Cree behind the goal they've re attacking. The poor traffic on the 75 must have thought they were under attack from an 80's video game.

When all looked lost a corner, what else, resulted in a standing not jumping Josh Rennie heading on the equaliser. To be fair it was a decent header.

The game reached 90+ mins without much else happening.

Can't recall too much occurring in extra-time but it was way past my bedtime so I was yawning a lot and rub inh my tired eyes. What I do remember is a Star definitely being the more assertive side and played more football in this 30min period than in the previous 90+.

They did create a myriad of chances. The most memorable was after my fave player Potts was played through by a beautiful pass from the Ferry Modric, it was a defence splitting pass just unfortunate it was his own defence, and lifted it so far over the bar it probably reached Ayrshire before it hit terra firma.

This boy has oodles of talent but every time I have watched him play he frustrates the life out of me with his attitude.

So the tie inexorably meandered its way to penalties; all 4 of Creetown's takers held their nerve and dispatched their penalties calmly and with some aplomb it must be said. Star's first kick was saved, wasn't a bad pen but was a comfortable enough stop by 'chunk' I heard the Creetown stopper referred to. The next 2 pens were taken calmly, in fact so was the 3rd of this triumvirate. But unfortunately it hit the inside of the keeps right hand post and careered across the goalmouth but did not cross the white line.

So I have a wee final to look forward to at, so I have been informed St.Mary's not 10 mins from my front door. A match up between 2 reams I have enjoyed watching this season.

The River Cree's very own Creetown F.C. and near neighbours the Creesiders otherwise known as Newton Stewart F.C.

For reference Ferry's Modric is the Creetown no.8 whose name I should know but can never remember and cannot be bothered looking it up again for the gazillionth time.

It is now way, way past my bedtime and I'm too tired to reply to the posts in the West Premier thread tonight so will get to them tomorrow at some point.

    #south/football/is/fun.

Dalbeattie looked like a few were rested/missing from there strongest eleven. Saturday back at Creetown in a league match will be a far more important and meaningful match, well it is in the minds of the supporters. 120 mins on a cold wet night on a heavy pitch is probably the last thing they wanted. Creetown dominated the 2nd half and should have been out of sight.

    No 8 is Lewis Dunn

Had a tidy up at the weekend and found the programmes for these games, googled for info and found this thread, from my memory:

The 1992 tournament, Stranraer/Gretna was on Thursday 23rd, QOS/PNE was Friday 24th, there was a last minute goal in that one possibly a QOS winner and the 3/4 and final were on Saturday 25th.

1993, sure it was QOS 1 Albion Rovers 1, Albion won on penalties.  Andy Cook scored for QOS and Tommy Bryce played for Albion and scored in the penalty shoot out, he re-signed for QOS a couple of weeks later

    1993 Tournament.

    Stranraer 3 Gretna 0, QOS 2 Albion 2 - Albion won on penalties, 3/4 QOS 3 Gretna 2, Final Stranraer 3 Albion 2.

Wonder if Stranraer still have the Trophy?

Possibility they can push a couple of league games back if they can get the league secure before playing them too.

Edit- There also seems a lot more room in the calendar than the SoS have allowed, they're trying to get everything finished a fortnight before EoS and WoS both have there last league games on the 11th of may.

What dates are the play-offs scheduled for?

  8. 35 minutes ago, Spyro said:

    That's the spirit! 🚢

Seriously though, I've nothing against the SoS. They've been about forever and never caused any hassle, even when they got dropped a tier to make way for the LL. Funny hearing an Annan fan defending the league when they chose to play in the EoS for years though

Way back in time, Annan used to play in the Carlisle league, must have joined the South League late 70's. More leagues than Threave Rovers!

Initially wasn't quite sure where to post this, but here is as good as an anywhere in our sub-forum.

Not intending this as a rant more to highlight where 'improvements' could be made.

The scheduling of cup-finals appears to be quite a haphazard affair, I see the Alba Cup is scheduled for Sat 13th April and will be 'competing' against 2 league games along with a Haig Gordon semi. This detracts from the importance of the final, semi and league games.

Any final should be an occasion as with the Alba Final last year at St.Mary's on a Friday night under the lights. The old ground was full to the brim with a crowd I believe in excess of 350.

Even though I was unable to attend, I had pencilled in both League Cup semis on successive nights in early March.

There are enough examples from the fixture scheduler, a few of which I have mentioned, that show it is possible to make these games a stand out by not scheduling them along with other games.

I feel with having just a handful of clubs in our system it can actually lend itself to making semis and finals accessible to all fans in the area and maybe encourage new ones to come along.

Surely its worth discussing this at a league meeting before next season.

Another thing Star could have the league wrapped up before their visit to Castle Cary at month end. Come on surely that potential league decider would have been a great advert for the league.

    Missed opportunities in my view.

Creetown v Star, the fixtures were made up and released at the start of the season, Star's last league game was actually against Mid Annandale which was brought forward, so they have tried.

Wasn't at the Lochar/Star final, roughly 800 there on a Friday night speaks volumes. The public have spoken!

Quick couple of questions from me, out of interest any excess gate money from these finals where does it go? Assume host club, officials and other incurred expenses are paid. I'm not suggesting any impropriety only curious.

When did Creetown change the pitch name from Cassencarie to Castle Cary?  I have been watching the Lowland League for the last 10 years so its been years since i played or watched a game there.

With NS lge season now being completed before the end of March, what revenue will they be able to bring before next season?

I have been reading about the concerns of some of the ex-SPFL clubs now in LL about the reduction of home games from 18 to 15 and the lost matchday revenue that comes with the fewer home games. There have been comments about that being one of the reasons for keeping the 2 b teams in the league.

This got me thinking about our own league and the 11 home games each club has to generate matchday revenue during the season. I would imagine that having this number of home games is putting some restraints on the commercial abilities of our clubs. Without expecting or asking Star to divulge their finances, would be interesting none the less, to hear from Star re: the effects of the 4 lesser home games.

I am aware there are lots of other factors involved in financing and running a club commercially. But  would be interested if any of our clubs feel the 'shortness' of our league season is impacting in their daily running and even ability to advance their clubs.

Again I am aware that there is not a easy answer to expanding league numbers, other than a potential 'amalgamation' with the WOS. But, that is an entirely separate discussion.

Re The Star, i don't represent the Star or have anything to do with them, 4 less league games is probably cheaper in the SOS than the LL. Lowland League requires Assistant Referees where as the SOS only does on the odd occasion.. Big financial saving.  Also 4 less away games>

  11. Results have certainly went Dalbeattie's way the last 2 weeks. Still some tough games for them to play though. Creetown v Dalbeattie still looks like the big game.  Newton Stewart only 1 league to play!

Was out today, got in just after 4, looked at the SOSFL website and all the results were up and the League table was updated. Excellent, well done to whoever keeps it updated 👍

  12. One of my pals was at the Threave Rovers game last weekend and got talking to some old boy who was asking a few questions. Seemingly the old boy was there to complete visiting every ground in the WOSFL. He can't drive and used public transport to every game. Now that is a few random games.

  13. 21 hours ago, Wee Smiler said:

Cant remember but didnt Dalbeattie also get a good result against a weak Celtic team that nearly stopped them being relegated last year.

Yes, Dalbeattie Star drew with Celtic B and Hearts B in the last month of last season. To be honest i don't know or care enough about Celtic/Hearts to know if they played weakened teams. The Celtic game was a wet, cold, windy night and the young boys didn't fancy it!

The League clubs voted the B teams, surely they must have thought the B teams might use "squad rotation", it's only a training exercise for them.

Anyway back to Gretnafc2008, seems they have signed a couple of ex threave players, and had one as a trialist, maybe signing localish players with previous Lowland League experience has led to an upturn in form. Well done them if it has

  14. 1 hour ago, HorseyGhirl said:

Cheers, I was wondering about that as was told at Lochar game that they are playing league games at the NWCC too. Hopefully folk will be able to go along and support both teams during the campaign. Really looking forward to watching the boys progression against some top sides.

It was just word of mouth i'd heard it had been changed and i tend not to believe anything unless i'ts written down.

NWCC, at least at Meadow you can get a seat, shelter and a cup of tea on a cold winter's night. Fancied going a long to couple of the Threave games but we'll have to see

The U20 boys from Lochar Thistle & Threave Rovers begin their campaign in the inaugural WOSFL Development League this Friday.

Both are in Conference A and start off with a home game. Will post details and how the conferences work in a later post.

Hope to see some right good games as our 2 entrants pit themselves against some of the best youngsters in the country.

I am just a product of my upbringing. I am very competitive and any sport I took part in always strived for improvement. (Not saying I was any good).

I do get annoyed, probably shouldn't, at the attitude around that we are only the SOSFL and as nice as the Scottish and the SRCC are as a wee distraction, we are content playing away in our own wee bubble down here. If that's what the SOSFL want then drop out of the pyramid and become a wee standalone league.

Personally, I don't witness or hear that at the games I've been at around Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire.

Not been to Star much to say but at NS and Creetown see two clubs that want to progress and move forward. Saints and W&B are at a different stage in their development.

There is another local club who have taken the bull by the horns who fully expected to be in Round 1 tonight. The whole demeanour and attitude at Meadow Park is of a club growing and wanting to be a positive component in the pyramid.

I have an understanding and knowledge of all the league's in our pyramid.  Am I expecting too much from our clubs. I don't think so.

I've seen ex boys clubs and ammies with no backing enter the pyramid and grow year on year with ambitions and expectations. Surely It's not wrong to want the same for some of our well established clubs.

A SOSFL team, Dalbeattie Star, won a game in the Scottish Cup, can you not just say well done!

Instead it's all about , previous performances and other clubs future ambitions.

As for belittling the clubs supporters for wanting to say well done on fb!!!! oh dear!!!! Jesus wept
