When the Anster chippy was in in its pomp, winning all the awards, the other local shops all raised their game. The Pittenweem chippy (RIP) went under the radar, but was outstanding fare. And these days the wee chippy in Anster seems to be the place to go.

Accept poor standards and you will continue to get served substandard shite.

Looks like Scraps could be coming to the East Neuk!

  2. What is folks view of ‘scraps’?

I think it is a Yorkshire/NE English thing as I haven’t seen it anywhere else. My son loves them and I am surprised it isn’t a thing here.

It’s basically those wee bits of batter left in the frier and heating rack that they put on top of your chip.

I was slightly taken aback the first time I was asked ‘Do you want scraps?’ In a Whitby Chippy thinking I was being challenged to a square go outside!

  3. For me VAR has totally destroyed the enjoyment of going to top flight games.  A goal can no longer be celebrated as the checks find that someone’s toe has been a couple of millimetres in front of a defender.

I much prefer going along to watch championships matches now. Football is a fast paced game and should be all about spontaneous reactions not a stop start game like Rugby where the TMO seems to work well.

If VAR was to stay the refs needs to be miked up so everyone can hear what is being discussed.

  4. My hometown has a great history in producing bands with Nazareth, The Skids and Big Country. You could also add Iain Anderson of Jethro Tull.

Personal favourites are Teenage Fanclub, The Silencers and Belle & Sebastian all of whom I have seen in the last year.

Has anyone mentioned Deacon Blue yet? The Mrs is keen on them and dragging me along to see them next month.

  5. Visited my parents today and got talking about the game, as they knew I was at it. They are Daily Mail reading, No voting Royalists. So I was surprised when my Dad was actually justified the booing of GSTK saying it was down to the Scottish fans being unhappy that England were using the UK anthem and not one of their own.  He did then admit that it would probably be booed regardless what was used.

The atmosphere wasn't poisonous at all, it was standard football pantomime stuff aside from the aforementioned Kane songs from a small number, and an even smaller number of England fans shouting down the minute's silence for Craig Brown. There was nothing violent in the air, and fans were walking to and from the stadium together and so on.

That probably just shows how sanitised the game is compared with back in the day.

The last Wembley game I was at was in 1988 and there were actual fights breaking out all over the stadium that day.

Got a bit of abuse last night for saying how good England were.

As someone who is too young to remember the home internationals and wasn't brought up with the "tradition" of playing England every year I'm happy for it to stay in the bin. The atmosphere felt pretty poisonous looking in last night.

I get the significance of Scotland v England in football history but happy never play them again unless we're drawn together.

I am old enough to remember when it was an annual event and apart from Cup Finals the only game shown live on TV.

I however agree that we shouldn’t play them in a ‘friendly’ again.

Hopefully the next time we meet is the Euro final next year when we can get our revenge!

Most people wouldn’t shout (obscenities or otherwise) at people in the street either, but they do at football.

If we really took a step back, booing a national anthem is hell of a lot more respectful than the way many football fans single out match officials and specific players for abuse that is wholly unacceptable in any other walk of life.

I didn’t/don’t boo anthems, but I can’t get at all animated by it because it’s hugely inconsistent to have an issue with that, but not with the much more personal (and far less political) chanting/yelling/abuse that happens at football across every level every weekend.

I had more of a problem with the jovial winding up of Maguire last night than the drowning out of the anthem, and only because we’re suddenly on the same side as the crass moronic pundits and fans that have long since overstepped the mark with him. Southgate dealt with it well, but if we’re measuring damage/offence by the actual impact it has, there’s only ever one clear ‘winner’.

I don’t have as much of an issue with the ‘ole’ every time Maguire got the ball last night from the Scottish fans. It is the sort of banter football players should expect and some players get much worse. He ended up on the winning side so had the last laugh.

I did have issues with the Harry Kane song, as much as I dislike him, he is the type of player I would love playing for my team. But that song is embarrassing and a sad throwback to the sort of thing I would’ve heard in my childhood back in the 70s/80s.

  9. Perhaps I remember all that optimism and overconfidence in 1978 too deeply , but I have had this fear as well.

We are so unused to be at this stage of the qualifying and being almost there, normally we are looking at an unlikely series of results from other teams to squeeze into a playoff spot.

I am still confident that we will qualify but certainly hope it is before the final game against Norway as we have seen how it goes when we go into a one off game with all the expectations on us. Croatia, Ukraine and last night(I know it was a friendly, but too many people were expecting a win).

Let’s hope that we have got a bad game out of our system and can get something in the next couple of games.

How loudly will you be booing the English anthem?

And will it he louder than the howls of faux outrage from the usual media sources?

If they actually played their own anthem instead of the UK Anthem then I might show it some respect! 😉

However as an atheist republican, GSTK will be getting the full respect that it deserves from myself tonight. 🤬

I look forward to news pictures of England supporters trailing disconsolately away from crumbling 'Fan Zones' dragging tear-stained St George's Crosses behind them.

Good job that they didn’t open the pubs early so they could all get pissed up then!
