  1. I like to call home Harry ‘Close But Not Quite’ Paton. I’ve never seen one player get into good positions to either make a telling pass, ride a tackle or have a meaningful shot on goal, but f**k it up almost every time. He grinds my gears.
  2. For me, Kettlewell’s biggest mistake/issue is playing a heavily tight footed right back at left back. He needs to start playing Gent and working on his defensive issues. Playing 5 at the back relies on the wing backs for width, but we have none on the left playing Spencer there. Spencer should be first choice right back and Gent should play left back until January at least, when we can either bring back the young lad from Stirling Albion or sign another left back. Yesterday we essentially played a flat back five for most of the first half and gave Dundee the freedom of Lanarkshire to build attacks. Hardly a single move went down the left as Spencer needs to keep coming inside into traffic. We got the break for the first goal, but it was a break.
  3. Not trolling, I just didn’t know that, which is a tad embarrassing. I knew about throw ins but not goal kicks. I guess the risk is someone else on your side gets first contact, but worth a gamble occasionally. Seems like a strange rule as if your goalie was a good kicker, you can force the defensive line right down field.
  4. I’m amazed that this wasn’t picked up by VAR or the BBC pundits, but it looks like Oli Shaw is a mile offside from the goal kick.
  5. Scott Burns tweeted the following on Twitter in a response to a query about Motherwell signings: “Hit the post on a couple. Striker a priority. Need to get fringe players out to free up budget. Money is tight.”

Photo by Matt Browne/Sportsfile FRI, 09 JUL, 2021 - 20:48 JOHN FALLON Scottish Premiership side Motherwell are set to complete the signing of Wexford-born defender Darragh O’Connor. The 21-year-old hasn’t had long to wait for a new club following his release by FA Cup winners Leicester City, earning a contract offer from Graham Alexander. O’Connor impressed over a two-game trial period to secure a deal. Fellow Scots St Johnstone were also interested in luring him but the centre-back will stay at Fir Park. It was just over two years ago when Leicester swooped to recruit O’Connor, who had racked up 20 first-team matches for League of Ireland First Division club Wexford during his teens. He was part of Leicester’s U23 squad, regularly training with Brendan Rodgers’ first-team, but needed a move to enhance his development with competitive minutes. Motherwell have Saturday’s final friendly against Millwall before they kick the season off with League Cup fixtures next week.
