Europa Conference League - Second Knockout Round - March 2122
SpoilerA good result I think, certainly one that gives us a chance if we can do the business in the away leg. And the performance gives me a lot of hope that we can do exactly that, as we were pretty unlucky not to win to be honest.
SpoilerA textbook away performance, and we're through. A ball back in after a corner saw Gonzalez unmarked at the back post for our opener, and after that it was a relatively straightforward tie for us. The second was an unfortunate one for them - a shot hit the post, came back out and hit their keeper's back and went in. Lovely stuff.
But we're through, and that's what matters.
We're going to get hammered.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. We stepped it up a notch in the second half, and Airdrie couldn’t live with it. If we could play like that from now until the end of the season, we’ll be in the Premiership next year.
Graham’s second goal was absolutely glorious and I genuinely cannot wait to watch it again. Fitzpatrick did really well at the first goal too - hopefully that gives him a confidence boost as he’s been slightly off it the last wee while. But he did really well rounding the keeper.
Hard to be critical after a 4-0 win, but here goes. McInroy seems to have a crippling phobia of the ball touching his right foot. Which isn’t ideal when he’s on the right of midfield. He did fine today, I thought, but there was a few times that he could’ve gone onto his right but just point blank refused to do it.
i don’t think Airdrie played especially badly - the keeper made a hash of it for the second goal and they were caught out after that.

This thread is going to make Thistle’s 36-0 win on the final day so much sweeter…

A decent first half despite the lack of goals. Both teams had decent chances, although I think we’ve had slightly more.

Probably home town bias at play here and I may be wtong but my suspicion is if you offered each of the managers at this level a choice of McMillan or Megwa for next season the majority would pick Megwa.
Megwa possibly has potential to be a better player than McMillan, but as of right now he isn’t.

Ridgers catching that corner
Still better attacking play anything Pepple done, tbf.

Is Pepple an actual real footballer, or has someone just brought along their wee brother for numbers?

Did I just hear that “get battered everywhere they go” song?

Weird that there’s no Morton players in there. Must be a mistake surely?

Stanway I've thought for lots of this season hasn't quite seemed up to this level yet but I also think the potential is there- by all accounts he had a great game on Saturday so hopefully he's getting there.
I think he really needs to work on his consistency, but that’s to be expected of a young player. When he’s been good, he’s looked comfortably good enough for this level - as he did on Saturday - but he simply hasn’t been good often enough. But at the same time, I think everyone, including him, is surprised at how often he’s played this season for a 19 year old.
I would really like MacKenzie to head out on loan at the start of next season and get a solid chunk of playing time in his actual position - which I assume is supposed to be as an attacking midfielder.

There’ll be guys playing at absolutely every level of football carrying knocks or injuries. I distinctly remember Aymeric Laporte talking about playing through injury a couple of years ago because Man City had a few other centre halves out at the time, so it seems it’s just part of the game. I don’t think you can, therefore, criticise us for it.
I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a game where I’ve thought this team is noticeably fitter than we are. That’s not to say that there aren’t improvements that could be made - of course there are - but i don’t think it’s an area where we’re particularly lagging behind.
On O’Reilly, I was also under the impression that we just offered a longer deal than Raith. We may also have offered him more money, I don’t know, but I also believe that if Raith wanted to match our offer, they could have.

Rovers have significantly more back room staff than us working both remotely and directly with the squad and managers. They’ve invested heavily in that area because it’s equally as important as the playing budget but thistle have never seemed to think so.
Rovers also have all that “conservatory money” to spend, whereas we don’t.

I don’t think it was a direct result of his training and coaching day to day.
There’s simply no way to know this one way or the other.
I’d also say that I really doubt that our set up is in any way “more basic” than most other clubs at our level. A Quick Look suggests that Morton and Raith have exactly the same coaching staff while others I looked at have one extra at most. Airdrie only have one coach who isn’t also a player.
And there’s a physio listed on our website, so I’d guess we do have one.

The best is still to come from this team.
This is the kind of thing that people post immediately before their team turn to absolute shite.
Here’s hoping, tbh.

Aye, no real need to make fun of Sibbald’s hair. Especially when his fucking tattoos are more than enough reason for ridicule.

Got to hand it to him, calling mountains of ching a “private medical expense” is quite funny. I’d almost be tempted to let him off for that.

I don’t think it’s fair to say that Tiff didn’t become a better player in the Thistle set up. I think he definitely did. I think he became better at knowing how to use his obvious abilities, and he also became better at actually impacting the games - that’s shown just in his goal record season to season.

Mullen
McMillan Gallagher Holt Milne
Docherty Sibbald
Watt Stanton Middleton
Graham
Subs: Walton, Megwa, Ujdur, Easton, Byrne, Fotheringhan, Paton

I could see Sneddon pitching up at either Cove or Queen of the South next season. Full time football, but only just, is about his level. I’d really appreciate him not being signed by us though.

Fitzpatrick
Probably not been consistent enough to actually make it, but if we played Arbroath every week he’d be on about a million goals for the season so fair enough shout.

I feel McMillan has regressed a little this year
I think this is true, but it’s also true that we’ll struggle to get someone of the same standard.
I always like Cammy Ballantyne that’s at Airdrie now - if he’s out of contract, might be worth a look. I’d also probably take Tumilty from Accies.

Hopefully someone can provide a word by word transcription service and post it on here.
If they could go full Falkirk FC and stick a video of the car crash online, I’d really appreciate that.

Would take Byrne as well but sure I read something on here when he signed for Raith on loan that for family reasons he needs to stay close-ish to Dundee or something.
This is correct.
He’s in Kennoway (or nearby) and has commitments outwith football which make him unwilling to travel very far. Which seems fair.
From what I’ve heard, the club has already made the best offer it can to McMillan, and given he’s no signed it yet would suggest that he’s away. Fair play to him if Premier league sides are sniffing about. So we definitely need a right back, and I’d take SOD but the likelihood of us enticing him back after his starring role in winning the Euros seems slim.
I’d take Callum Butcher as the Abdul Osman replacement we’ve wanted for about 6 years.

Conquering Europe

A poor month, and one that will almost certainly cost us in the title race.
Other than the first game, and the European exploits, we just didn't do enough in any of these games.
And we drop back to four points behind. Could've been worse if Slavia had taken full advantage.
