Reality is a number of players out of contract are our highest earners. To go two deep with right sided centre backs/right backs both in their 30's and key figures one of the worst performing defences in the league seems wild and when there's a focus to spend wiser than we have, is just unsustainable.

Said a few weeks back the RB position for us under Ketts is rigidly a wingback and you need someone to hoon it up and down that wing. SOD wouldn't last a half in that role now and any pacy winger will cook him.

Not pinning our record on the two of them but they played a part. If our back 5 shows up with any less than two new faces at game one of SPFL 24/25, I'm give up. We really shouldn't count Gent's replacement as one of them.

All this talk about good characters in the dressing room, yeah its a nice bonus but really shouldn't be a defining factor in a contract renewal over a long list in the con's column.

The only player that should be a shoe-in is ironically Blackburn's.

I think SOD gets forward more often than Devine.  The difference may be that SOD moves forward to receive the ball whereas we may be look8ng for a wingback to take the ball forward.

Of course his time at Motherwell hasn't been without his challenges, but I think that would be daft personally. I'm not saying we should be resigning him with a view to him playing every minute, but he has started 30/35 league games this season (coming on as a sub in the other five), has been fit all season, has been versatile and has provided four assists. He is also local to the area and at his age, I don't imagine will be difficult to deal with financially. He's also an experienced professional to have around the place when we often lament the lack of them.

That pass to Georgie Gent earned him another year in my view.

It is well within Motherwell FC’s best interests to allow Ross County to win this association soccer match. The damage that the loss of ‘The Mallard’ would do to the top flight is unimaginable, and the above result goes a long way to preventing this from happening and fighting the evil in St Johnstone.

There is a bit of truth in this.  Plus, have I mentioned the Wimpy?

We tried various combinations in pre-season and the LC group and from that I confidently declared McGinn the only viable candidate to replace Butcher in the middle.

Wrong, obviously, and you could at least see the theory in what we were trying instead.

However, how we didn't go back to what long looked the simple solution until April having shuffled through every other combination (or so it seemed) was definitely odd.

He tried various combinations in most games until recently.

My view on Halliday when he signed was he'll do and that's still the case.

We're never going to have eleven players on the up that we like, much less a squad of 20+ and by definition of you want experience, you sacrifice performance - because if a player is high on both we couldn't afford them.

Halliday looked fine when he started relative to playing 10 seconds all season. Is it possible that his legs are gone at 31 and after 100s of games, including some biggies, for Rangers and Hearts, he can't do any kind of job for us for 18 months? Sure. But more plausible is we rushed him back because with Paton and Slattery out we had no choice.

He won't be great by any means next season but he'll be solid enough playing parts of 25-30 games before we say thanks and move on. Not everyone we have will be a star, and that's fine.

I agree completely about the culture thing...as fans we lament the constant change every year, two years at the most. Ok, but the guys we can build a longer relationship with are by definition those who don't get offered more by Hearts etc.

on the assumption that he will be better after a pre-season he is the type of guy you can throw on to see out a game, no creativity for us but may nullify an opposition, can probably fill in for 20 minutes in many positions including full back, has stories to tell in the dressing room, might be able to drive the minibus for the youth team etc.

County despite wins over Hibs and the other mob needs to keep that home form going, a win for Saints over already relegated Livi and with County going to play them afterwards it all points to the absolute necessity that they can scrap a win before the nerve shredder of a match against Aberdeen who have horsed us all season.

1-0 Dhanda screamer from free kick Kelly routed to the spot!!

I think Livi may go undefeated now that the pressure is off.  They could have a bit of fun.

  7. A match thread on a Monday is nose bleed territory.  I expect to see the ‘Well team in the Wimpy with me for the pre match meal.  Theoretically we play with the freedom of a team with no concerns akin to peak Brazil but also likely is a lethargic testimonial affair as some of the players start to wave their good byes.

  8. It looks to me as if the ref asked for the VAR review, he seemed to be speaking into his mic as soon as the incident occurred.  I’m not sure if that is how it’s meant work.  If he thought it was a penalty should he not have awarded it in the knowledge it would be reviewed and the opportunity to overturn it would be there.

However I seem to remember that a failed penalty award would have meant that we didn’t get the corner so perhaps the sequence of events was correct.

  9. Spittal was fine today, not spectacular, Nicholson showed that he could be an asset next season, Halliday, although doing a job was below par in my view.

In general I thought there were a few times when we were playing through the middle that we chose a snap diagonal pass which didn’t come off when the guy with the ball had room to go forward himself - maybe even fire off a thunderbast*rd.

  10. I thought that Kelly could have come out for the Livi goal, I don’t think he would have got it but it would have given Nouble something to think about, as it was he just nodded the ball in.  That goal and the little flurry by Livi probably prevented the young boys getting on for any meaningful time.
